[QUESTION] Does anyone know who owns argfest.com? (Hi, mods and admins -- I know this would probably be more appropriate in the Social or V&S forums, but I wanted as many people as possible to see it, so I would love it if you'd leave it here for a few days...)
Argfest.com is registered anonymously -- I was just wondering if anyone here had grabbed it. Anyone?

ARGFest.com I own ARGFest.com, but would be more than happy to set it up with hosting, and give you access to it if you'd like to develop it as a portal for future ARGFests or as a way of documenting past ones.
Feel free to PM me if you'd like to discuss it more.

One of our hopeful specs was you, Dave. Glad it *was* you and not someone we don't know.

I am wondering if perhaps the domain could more officially be tied/transferred/registered to Unfiction and the ARGN portal structure, since it has indeed been a manifestation of this community for several years now.
It would definitely be appropriate.

I say if Dave wants to pay the bills, let him.

While I agree with the idea of letting someone cover the bills if they want, I also agree that it would be nice to see this move over to the UF/ARGN portal structure.
Looking forward with really wide, hopeful eyes, I see ARGfest getting bigger and better every year. It's already the primary social gathering for players and pms of any & all ARGs (there are game specific events that have drawn larger audiences), and I can't imagine it being usurped any time soon. It has always been organized and planned by the players at UF/ARGN and it would be nice to see the domain for the event held under that umbrella and, frankly, out of the control of a PM entity.

Haven't most of the owners of the ARGN sites been PMs at some time? If Varin or Bill or someone goes big time and has the next gigantic commercial ARG, do we kick 'em to the curb?
Anyway, I remember suggesting in #unfiction a couple of times that someone buy the domain, and I finally posted it on the board here in early Feb. Of course, there's always .org, .net, .info, .etc. too.

I think the difference is that unlike Dave, who is not part of the ARGN or UF administration team, Varin and Bill -- even were they to become PMs of a gigantic commercial ARG -- are also part of that administration.
I think what other people in this thread were trying to say is that ARGFest should be a UF/ARGN thing, and not a 42/GMD/Mind Candy/Dave S. thing.
Therefore if Varin or Bill were to help run ARGFest.com, they'd be acting in their capacity as representatives of UF/ARGN, not as PMs of whatever.
It may, at this point, seem like a meaningless distinction, but I think it may grow in importance as the genre does.
That said, I'm delighted to find out that it's Dave who registered it, and not the American Retro Golfers or whatever.

There were no curbs nor kicking in my post.
Kicking Curbs is a great name for a band, though!

Personally, I don't care who owns the domain as long as it is one of us. By us, I mean someone involved in ARGs. I don't see what the big deal is, really. As imbri stated - ARGfest is a "social gathering for players and pms of any & all ARGs" (emphasis mine). So why does it matter if a PM owns the domain ? It's just a domain, not the actual fest. It's only a matter of who pays the 8 bucks a year for the website name.
Anyway, cabalagent stated that he would be happy to give us access and hosting so we could use it to plan future fests or document old ones. So I don't see why we still couldn't use it, link to it, add it to the top ARGN banner or whatever. If cabalagent's head were to split open and we discover he is an evil alien robot trying to take over the world, we don't have to use that domain.

Is that a clue?

Uhhhhhhhhhh, I'd feel the same no matter who had gotten the domain. It's because of the history and origin of the event itself that the registration probably should point directly back to Space or Unfiction/ARGN itself.
I have had the wiki for ARGfest06 up since November of 2005. argfest.com was registered in February of this year. Just a bit curious as to why I was never offered hosting back then.

argfest. org If SpaceBass wants to register www.ARGFest.org I will gladly pay for it.
The org designation may be more appropriate.
I have to add that Dave S. /cabalagent was amazingly supportive to ARGFest NYC and was one of the principal reasons it became such a large event. It started with my simply wanting Jane McG to give a talk and then Dave offered to do a PM training event which his publisher would fund. And it all expanded from there.
Dave had more than ample justification to remove himself from ARGFest planning due to extreme personal circumstances that would have had me totally giving up. (he may not be happy with me mentioning it here, if so, sorry Dave.) Not only did he not resign, he worked feverously to get things finished, and then had to leave before he could enjoy the fruits of his work. He covered many of the costs associated with the Festquest so that it was completely free to players.
I know this isn't a referendum on Dave personally! I just don't think we can ever adequately thank him for all his help and support in planning that event, so I thought I would mention it again here.
Thanks again Dave!

Certainly not.
But I think registering domains and setting up some redirects would be a good idea. ARGFest.org may indeed be more appropriate, and perhaps Dave would be willing to set up a redirect from ARGFest.com.
Perhaps we can grab some others as well and do the same thing with them. I'm happy to donate the cost of registering some (or register them myself and set up a redirect if that's easier).
Thoughts I had:
argfest.net (obviously)
argfestocon.com
argfestocon.net
argfestocon.org

Did ya ask?
Seems to me that when I kept poking people on chat/the board to go buy argfest.com back in Jan/Feb, the wiki was already well-established. I'm sure that if anyone had brought it up then, we'd probably be having the same conversation, only earlier in the year when it's cooler out. I'm mellllllllllllting.
