Travis is on AIM again. I'm chatting with him now, I'll edit it into the post once the conversation is finished.

Woo! Chat with Travis

Yay, Travis logged on at 6:00pm Central time, and I got to chat with him. Here's what went down:

Quote:
jenni42ld (6:00:09 PM): Hi. I'm a part of the community that SamRey56 is a part of. I believe you talked with him before? We heard that you're having some problems, and we're pretty good at figuring stuff out.
LawForsaken (6:00:27 PM): Ah, yes he said there were more of you.
jenni42ld (6:00:48 PM): There are indeed, and we've taken an interest in your problems, they are...worrisome.
LawForsaken (6:01:00 PM): They are.
LawForsaken (6:01:34 PM): I'm stuck living in fear, I was told I was being watched. I don't know how to live my daily life without being caught.
jenni42ld (6:02:29 PM): Well, from what I've read in your blog, I don't think rolling over for "Them" is going to help. You know something or may be close to something, and people like that tend to tie up loose ends.
jenni42ld (6:02:43 PM): The law is supposed to help and protect people...not this.
LawForsaken (6:02:55 PM): Which is why I feel forsaken from it.
LawForsaken (6:03:05 PM): The law was my life, and it has turned itself on me.
jenni42ld (6:04:30 PM): I don't know the whole story, but that seems accurate from what you've said in your blog. And this Synthesis sounds dangerous. I wouldn't let them move you into a new life, that makes me think they'll just know where you are for easy disposal, I hate to say.
LawForsaken (6:05:26 PM): I told Sam, I think that is his name, that they called me and told me they were watching me.
jenni42ld (6:05:32 PM): I know you've said to SamRey56 that you didn't have any clue what you were working on that was so dangerous, perhaps we could help you figure that out, and that would give us a lead in figuring this out?
jenni42ld (6:06:06 PM): Yeah, he told us about the phone call... maybe you can do your posting online from a library or some public area where it would be harder to track what you're doing online?
LawForsaken (6:06:43 PM): I don't know.
jenni42ld (6:06:49 PM): Just a thought.
LawForsaken (6:06:50 PM): I'm sure they have good tabs on me.
jenni42ld (6:07:25 PM): Oh, no doubt. But we're pretty good too, and if you figure out who's after you, I think it'd be easier to avoid and keep tabs on them.
LawForsaken (6:07:56 PM): That is the problem. I don't know anything about them.
jenni42ld (6:08:37 PM): Weel, you know that they are dangerous. You know that they feel they are threatened by you, and you know that the threat is somewhere in your current work and activities.
jenni42ld (6:08:45 PM): Weel = well
LawForsaken (6:08:49 PM): Yeah.
jenni42ld (6:09:44 PM): Would you consider making a list of your work and activities, if only in the barest of details of your work (I understand privacy issues) so that we can perhaps narrow the list down?
LawForsaken (6:10:08 PM): Well, I know what this is coming from, sort of.
LawForsaken (6:10:11 PM): I know this is from work.
LawForsaken (6:10:17 PM): I dug too deep into something on a case.
jenni42ld (6:10:23 PM): That'd make sense.
jenni42ld (6:10:42 PM): Do you think it's from your old work, that made you start a new life to begin with, or with your new work online?
LawForsaken (6:11:29 PM): Back when I was a cop.
jenni42ld (6:11:57 PM): Gotcha. And somehow related or tangential to something you're in currently.
LawForsaken (6:12:29 PM): I honestly don't know. I can't think of anything that I have done now that might make me a threat
jenni42ld (6:13:08 PM): Well, they made reference to your current activities, so it's probably related somehow. Perhaps one of your current activites will lead you to the proof you needed in your old life?
LawForsaken (6:13:25 PM): I don't understand.
jenni42ld (6:14:39 PM): Well, you posted your email from Synthesis online, on your blog. He (or she, I guess) says that you need to give up your current activities, that you are making a huge mistake, "one that will cost you."
LawForsaken (6:15:08 PM): yeah
LawForsaken (6:15:25 PM): I think I might have stumbled onto something at this new job.
jenni42ld (6:15:38 PM): But you don't know what?
LawForsaken (6:15:48 PM): nto exactly.
LawForsaken (6:15:59 PM): I accidentaly found my way back into the old database.,
jenni42ld (6:16:04 PM): Ah.
jenni42ld (6:16:34 PM): And this is why you think it might be related to from when you were a cop? Or do I misunderstand?
LawForsaken (6:16:52 PM): yeah
LawForsaken (6:16:54 PM): You got it.
jenni42ld (6:17:57 PM): So you're a threat to them. Let us help you uncover this mess - if evil plots are revealed, they can't hurt anyone anymore.
LawForsaken (6:18:09 PM): except me.
LawForsaken (6:18:18 PM): And my family.
jenni42ld (6:18:21 PM): But what if there is proof to put these people away for good?
LawForsaken (6:18:54 PM): Is it worth digging for?
jenni42ld (6:19:30 PM): You already lost one life. And I can't believe that if you say "Ok, I'll go away" that they'll just leave you. What do bad guys do with a threat?"
LawForsaken (6:20:11 PM): If I do go away, tabs will be kept on me, they will know if I stop.
jenni42ld (6:22:27 PM): You're the only one who can answer if this is worth it. But I thought that the bad guys tended to eliminate threats. Maybe I'm wrong. Or maybe, in the database you've stumbled upon, there's proof to get rid of these guys and regain your old life. Especially if you're right and this is related to the case where you were made patsy.
LawForsaken (6:25:18 PM): I just don't know if this is truly worth it./
jenni42ld (6:27:01 PM): Again, you're the only one that can answer that. Just know that there's a group of people, Sam, myself, and others, who are willing to help you puzzle this out. What happened to you isn't right. But it's completely your decision. We're willing to help.
LawForsaken (6:27:31 PM): It is something I will have to dwell over.
LawForsaken (6:28:33 PM): You have to understand, I have a daughter. One I love very much.
jenni42ld (6:28:39 PM): Well, we're here, and now you have my AIM screenname.
jenni42ld (6:28:50 PM): I understand that. You're not with her now, since you left your old life?
LawForsaken (6:29:35 PM): my wife divorced me, and took my daughter.
jenni42ld (6:30:13 PM): Can you contact her and tell her they may be in danger? Just give her a heads up, just in case?
LawForsaken (6:30:19 PM): She hates me.
LawForsaken (6:30:33 PM): I am not allowed to see my kid.
LawForsaken (6:30:39 PM): I miss my daughter.
jenni42ld (6:31:28 PM): Well, I'd say that's not right, but obviously the law is not on your side. I'd still say to give the ex a heads up, just in case.
LawForsaken (6:31:50 PM): I'll try.
jenni42ld (6:33:00 PM): *nod* Good. Even if she doesn't believe you she might be a little more careful.
LawForsaken (6:33:09 PM): Let me call her.
jenni42ld (6:33:21 PM): Ok.
LawForsaken (6:34:21 PM): Okay hold on. Let me call Angela.
jenni42ld (6:35:07 PM): I'm holding. And keeping my fingers crossed for you.
LawForsaken (6:36:34 PM): What a skank!
jenni42ld (6:36:40 PM): Uh oh.
LawForsaken (6:36:46 PM): She pretty mcuh told me to go to hell.
jenni42ld (6:36:57 PM): Did you get any sort of warning out before that?
LawForsaken (6:37:17 PM): She said she did not believe me.She said that this was all a scam to get to Haley. That's my daughter.
jenni42ld (6:37:53 PM): *nod* Well, hopefully even if she doesn't, she'll make sure the doors are locked, keep a closer eye on your daughter, and such.
LawForsaken (6:38:41 PM): I'm running out of options.
jenni42ld (6:39:02 PM): Well, is there anything we can do to help?
LawForsaken (6:39:50 PM): At this point, just support, I need to figure out what my next course of action will be.
jenni42ld (6:40:21 PM): *nod* Ok. Well, you certainly have the support. And if you need help with this database thing, let us know - we have computer people. Heck, I'm a computer person.
LawForsaken (6:40:57 PM): Thanks
LawForsaken (6:41:02 PM): What is your name?
jenni42ld (6:41:07 PM): Jenni Smile
LawForsaken (6:41:26 PM): Nice to meet you Jenni, as you know, i'm Travis.
jenni42ld (6:41:49 PM): Yes, I've been reading your blog. It's nice to talk to you as well. I am keeping my fingers crossed for you.
LawForsaken (6:42:48 PM): Thanks Jenni.
jenni42ld (6:43:12 PM): No prob at all. Abuses of power are bad stuff, and should be stopped. Glad to help.
jenni42ld (6:45:05 PM): Again, let me know if I, or the rest of our community, can do anything to help.
LawForsaken (6:45:13 PM): Thanks Jenni.

And now I just got invited to a chatroom chat with Travis and a couple of our other Unforums people - but I'll leave that for later or someone else can post that.

Okay, so here's my solo conversation with him, followed by the conversation that went down in the chat. I suck at codes, so if someone else could handle the code from the chat, that'd be great. Hopefully the spoiler tags will work.

Quote:
LawForsaken: Hello.
SamRey56: Hi. How are things going?
LawForsaken: They are the same.
LawForsaken: Still living within the shadows.
SamRey56: Have you heard any more from the Synthesis group?
LawForsaken: No. I have been doing research though.
SamRey56: Did you find anything? I've been trying to do some research on my own, but I've had no leads.
LawForsaken: Well my research has been on the database we had where I worked. So I understand why nothing was found on your behalf.
LawForsaken: As you saw on my blog, I have come to the conclusion that this is all a cause of me sticking my nose where it was not needed.
LawForsaken: So I went back to my past, to my cases. What started this whole mess.
SamRey56: So they definitely are from your past, then? Not just people who found out about it?
LawForsaken: Yeah, they are from my past, what is what I am assuming.
SamRey56: Hm...so why would they come after you now?
LawForsaken: Synthesis said that they did not care that I was catching criminals and whatnot, I think what got them alerted was what I was digging into.
SamRey56: Something bigger than you initially thought?
LawForsaken: I assume so.
LawForsaken: So I was digging into my old cases. The ones that called out to me.
SamRey56: And you found something relating to Synthesis?
LawForsaken: Nothing yet.
LawForsaken: I don't understand
SamRey56: It's definitely a confusing situation. The only thing I can think is that maybe it has something to do with organized crime. Did you work any cases like that?
LawForsaken: Not that I can think of off the top of my head.
LawForsaken: I'm running research now.
SamRey56: Ok. Obviously, Synthesis has the resources to at least create the illusion of being able to create a new life for you. I don't know whether they actually expected you to agree to what they were saying or not, but it has to be some kind of powerful organization.
LawForsaken: I'm sure it is.
LawForsaken: They had the power and connections to have me revoed from justice.
SamRey56: True. So they could be within law enforcement, or just capable of infiltrating the police. There is a possibility, I suppose, that it goes even higher than that, but that's frightening to think about.
LawForsaken: What i do know is, I do, or did have access to something huge.
LawForsaken: I*
SamRey56: And that's why they orchestrated your removal, right?
LawForsaken: I think so.
SamRey56: If that's the case, then I think it means you probably do still have access to whatever it is, or maybe regained access to it after starting your new life. Otherwise they wouldn't be pursuing you.
LawForsaken: I mean, the only thing I see that would be a threat is the fact that I found way into the old database.
LawForsaken: And that was an accident.
SamRey56: So there has to be something in the database itself that Synthesis doesn't want anyone to see. How did you get access again?
LawForsaken: It was an accident.
SamRey56: I see. The question is, what could be so important on the database that they would go to such lengths to hide it?
LawForsaken: Exactly.
SamRey56: Once you do find it, would there be a way for the people trying to help you to get access to it? That way you wouldn't have to research it all yourself. If they're watching you as closely as they say, they must know you're looking into it.
LawForsaken: I have not been able to dig in, for fear that I might get caught
SamRey56: Maybe those of us trying to help you could do the digging for you? Even if Synthesis knows we're trying to help you, they would have less access to information about us, so it would be less risky.
LawForsaken: At this point, I need to decide whether it is worth digging for.
LawForsaken: I have my life, the lives of my families members, and my close friends at stake.
SamRey56: You're right. I hadn't thought of that.
SamRey56: On the one hand, Synthesis needs to be brought to justice, but on the other hand, it's such a huge risk to anyone involved...
LawForsaken: Which is why I have fear if diggin more.
LawForsaken: I was taught to bring all to justice, but once justice itself turned on me, I don't know who is right anymore.
SamRey56: I don't think justice turned on you. I think justice is a higher calling than just an order of people seeing it done. Even if the people enforcing the law turn on you, the true justice will always be in your favor if you're doing the right thing. That's what I think, anyway.
LawForsaken: I used to think the same, but if they got into the police system, what makes me think they are not into the higher ups?
SamRey56: True, but at the same time, whatever it is Synthesis is doing has to be pretty bad. If someone doesn't dig for it, the results could potentially be really bad.
LawForsaken: What is your name?
SamRey56: I go by Esteed on blogspot, but my real name is Jerry.
LawForsaken: Jerry, okay.
SamRey56: My biggest fear for you, when it comes to leaving things as they are, is that we don't know for sure whether Synthesis will really leave you alone if you stop digging. If you don't have any information to use against them, you'd have no way of getting leverage if that time ever came.
LawForsaken: I don't know where to go from here Jerry, One of your friends, told me to call Angela. I'm sorry if I didn't tell you about her yet.
SamRey56: It's ok, don't worry. You'll tell me about things when you're ready to, I understand that.
LawForsaken: I was once a married man.
LawForsaken: I lived happily with Angela, She meant the world to me. Until things took a turn for the worse. She became a porn star, and an alcoholic.
LawForsaken: She divorced me, took my daughter, and I have not seen her since.
LawForsaken: I just called her, to give her a heads up, to make sure her doors were locked at night, and she told me to go to hell
SamRey56: I'm sorry to hear that. You're just trying to do what's right... Maybe there's some way to convince her to listen to reason?
LawForsaken: No, she is drunk all the time, I've tried.
LawForsaken: I haven't seen my daughter Haley for 16 months Jerry. I miss her. i am worried for her.
LawForsaken: I*
SamRey56: Of course you are. In this situation, who wouldn't be worried about their family? Especially their children.
SamRey56: Is there anything I can do to help?
LawForsaken: Support.
LawForsaken: I need to figure out what I am going to do.
SamRey56: You have my support, whatever you choose to do. The only advice I can give is that you have to follow your heart, no matter what anyone else tells you. If your heart tells you to keep digging, that stopping Synthesis is worth the risk, then that's the right call.
LawForsaken: Thanks Jerry, At times like these, it's people like you and your friends that make these desolate events not seem so alarming.
SamRey56: Anytime. I'm here to help however I can.
LawForsaken: Thanks Jerry.
LawForsaken: Jerry, Why don't we make a chat room on aim so i can talk to you and your other two friends at the same time.
SamRey56: That sounds like a plan to me.
LawForsaken: Would you make it please?
SamRey56: Sure. I would need to know their AIM names, though.

Obviously, that was the solo convo. Here's the chat:

Quote:
You have just entered room "chat3404058020647611547."
LawForsaken has entered the room.
HCON1277 has entered the room.
jenni42ld has entered the room.
jenni42ld: Hello.
SamRey56: Hi.
HCON1277: Hey
LawForsaken: Hello.
jenni42ld: Hi again, Travis. Hi Sam.
HCON1277: Hi Travis and Sam, it's AngBa
HCON1277: and jenni
SamRey56: Hi. This is Esteed, but you can call me Jerry.
LawForsaken: hey Jerry, Jenni, and Hconn, I didn't catch your name.
HCON1277: AngBa
LawForsaken: AngBa?
HCON1277: AngryBanana Smile
LawForsaken: Nice.
jenni42ld: lol
HCON1277: thx
LawForsaken: What is your name though?
HCON1277: Heather
LawForsaken: Hey Heather.
HCON1277: Hello
LawForsaken: So, yeah at this point, I just want some support.
HCON1277: From synthisis, but why? If I may ask
jenni42ld: We're definitely here to help.
Ajeremy311 has entered the room.
LawForsaken: Synthesis is out to get me
LawForsaken: HEllo Jeremy.
Ajeremy311: Hello
Ajeremy311: do you know why
LawForsaken: Apparently I ran into something I should have kept myself out of.
HCON1277: can you elaborate?
LawForsaken: I would if I knew what it was.
jenni42ld: I was particularly interested in the database you mentioned to me, Travis. But of course, I'm a computer person. lol
LawForsaken: lo.
LawForsaken: That is understood.
LawForsaken: lol*
SamRey56: I was too, but I'm less of a computer person, more of a "Agent Mulder" person. XD So databases are generally good leads.
LawForsaken: I'm just afraid for Haley.
HCON1277: Haley? I just stumbled onto your blog yesterday, so maybe I've missed something...
LawForsaken: My daughter.
HCON1277: Do you think they would go after her?
SamRey56: Naturally. I think anyone would be afraid for their children in your situation. If there's any way we can help with that, I'm sure we all would.
HCON1277: Definitely
Ajeremy311: of course
LawForsaken: I am grateful for all you are doing for me.
HCON1277: We are all happy to help, however we can
SamRey56: Right.
jenni42ld: Of course.
HCON1277: Where is your daughter, Travis?
LawForsaken: With Angela.
LawForsaken: My Ex.
HCON1277: Do you know that they are ok right now?
LawForsaken: As of 5 minutes ago.
jenni42ld: Which is good.
HCON1277: Did you talk to one of them?
LawForsaken: Indeed.
LawForsaken: Angela.
LawForsaken: She won't let me talk to Haley.
HCON1277: Why not, again if I might ask...
LawForsaken: That little whore bag won't let me talk to her.
SamRey56: I'm not exactly jumping on the Angela fan club over here.
LawForsaken: She divorced me.
HCON1277: Divorce is an ugly thing, been there... Did she give you a reason to think that your daughter was in trouble?
Ajeremy311: was it because of these people you are trying to get away from?
LawForsaken: No, she became a porn star and an alcoholic.
Ajeremy311: oh
jenni42ld: goodness.
HCON1277: porn star? classy
LawForsaken: Yeah
jenni42ld: Well, if you tell CPS (Child protective services) that your daughter may be in danger - even telling them anonomously - they have to check it out.
SamRey56: That's a good point, I hadn't thought of that.
jenni42ld: Just a thought.
S1547NY5 has entered the room.
LawForsaken: ?
LawForsaken: Who are you?

jenni42ld: Er... who invited this person in? Sam invited me...
LawForsaken: What is this?
S1547NY5: kobhebmgfbtibbemnpscsipca
SamRey56: Don't look at me. I didn't invite them.
S1547NY5: hmgmgcappmghcab
jenni42ld: I didn't think you would...anyone else?
HCON1277: I didn't
S1547NY5: mnpscarsibcrcaalptibfksipcahofbebebsi12sck

Ajeremy311: no
jenni42ld: Code maybe? Encryption?
S1547NY5 has left the room.
LawForsaken: What is this?
HCON1277: I think so jenni
SamRey56: Quite probably some kind of code, yeah.
LawForsaken: Are you guys trying to screw me over?
HCON1277: Travis, I'm here to help.... I swear
Ajeremy311: no of course not
jenni42ld: Of course not. I think that person was on an encryption...I don't recognize it offhand, but I can find out.
HCON1277: I'm trying to look myself
SamRey56: I'm here to help. I want to do the right thing here.
LawForsaken: I have to rethink my loyalties. I might be in touchj
LawForsaken has left the room.

That's the part with the character interaction. If people want me to post the rest of the chat I will, but that's just speccing and discussing what we know.

[edit - please don't spoiler chats or emails, save spoiler tags for a puzzle solve in case others want to try to solve it themselves before reading the answer. it would also be very helpful to give a quick summary of the most important information gleemed from any chat, or at least highlight/bold or otherwise show the difference between something a character says and all the other stuff going on in the chat. so i found that part and made it stand out. kona]

The mystery name got back on for a few moments, AngBa hit it up, and all that was said was "We know". So I figure that was Synthesis just popping in to be scary and intimidating. As far as Synthesis spewing in the chat, it has to be a code, but nothing I'm trying works.

Ai ya, my brain is fried from trying to work on this code *bleh*

All I can come up with is it must be a substitution code, because there's a certain amount of regularity to the letters:

For instance two lines both start with 'mnpsc' and that is also found repeatedly throughout the text (must be a fairly common 5-letter word, if it IS a simple substitution cipher) Also, 'mgmg' is found alot, with various letters in front in each instance. (not sure of many words which repeat two letters twice??).

Anywho, just my crazy midnight ravings...

EDIT: Also, there's one instance of 'bbb' which, if this is subsitution, must be the result of no word spacing (likely the one word ends in whatever 'bb' is and the next word starts with 'b'...if that just made any sense)

Travis signed on for a second, but I didn't get much sleep last night and had kinda...uh, well, fallen asleep at the keyboard would be a good way of putting it. I know he was online because I rarely close IM windows I decide are important, so I can tell when people log on and off even if I'm not paying attention. It was really no more than like two or three seconds, but did anybody catch him before he popped back out?

AIM, Code

He signed on for three seconds. Usually that's a sign that they've got the autologon button clicked, and they didn't realize it. He obviously didn't want to talk to anyone. Usually by the time you see the icon telling you that a buddy is logged on, they are logging off when that happens, due to delays.

I stayed up way too late myself, working on this code, but I got my frequency analysis done, as horrifyingly annoying this may be. I'm kinda wondering if this is NOT a simple substitution cipher.

Yeah, I have no idea what's up with the code. I've even tried anagraming the messages themselves. Sadly, the culprit for my sleepless night is that I made the mistake of using my Buffy season one DVD as background noise. Just a tip: When you haven't seen episodes of your favorite show in a while, they don't exactly help you fall asleep. >.>

To make it a little easier, here's the code line by line as it is in the chatlog. Seems easier than digging through the log to find it.

Quote:
mnpscharbfsibebbbelipararblica
vbharbnabbsfsincahhekpsimnpsc
hsibemnpscarsopsiblihmgmg2hsinbmg
kobhebmgfbtibbemnpscsipca
hmgmgcappmghcab
mnpscarsibcrcaalptibfksipcahofbebebsi12sck
cparfcafk1vbvfmgmgnasipv

EDIT: Looking at it, the screen name is: S1547NY5, the highest single digit being 7. There are 7 lines of code. I think the screen name has something to do with deciphering it.

Yeah, we thought so too, but we haven't been able to figure out what. We've tried replacing the numbers with letters and anagraming it to use as a key for a vigenerie (spelling is probably off) as well as using it unaltered as a key, both before and after replacing the numbers with letters. I've been trying to wrap my brain around it, but I can't quite figure out how it could fit. I do agree it has something to do with it, though.

Just throwing this WAAAAAY out there (since you never know) taking numbers from the sign-in name 'S1547NY5' as a zip code gives you the zip code for 'Republic, PA'...which is vaguely interesting since 'law' is involved and 'republic' is a type of government...probably WAAAY off base though, but interesting!

I was dreaming this stupid code and thought about it all day at work (unfortunately didn't have time to work on it)... Guess we're all stumped... I wonder if Travis is going to make an appearance again tonight?
