For what it's worth, I'm using Trillian, and they signed on, hit me up and within seconds were gone. Then 6 mins later signed on just long enough to hit me up w/ the revised message...

ETA: In light of negativeview's post below mine, just for the record, I'm CST...

If anyone thinks it's important, we might be able to sync the lags between signon/off, as they may be more reliable than just the raw times. My clock may be off. I personally doubt it's important, I think that the one different IM was probably a fluke.

Edit: Also CST

So I noticed someone from IU recieved a clue today. I have already decided there is no way I will be able to figure this one out. http://www.immersionunlimited.com/index.php?topic=2583.0;prev_next=next#new

The synopsis over there gets all but one of the things that jumped out at me:

Quote:
1. the line about tossing the whitefish I think is trying to say that the formatting of the numbers is not correct and we must remove the blank spaces.

2. the line about the 2x3 being the correct tool might mean we need to break them into groups of 3. (not sure about this one though, it is just the first thing that came to mind)

3. I think the story may be trying to convey that UF was on the wrong track with trying to make an image out of the puzzle and that Synthesis was not mad at them, just giving them a shove back in the correct path.

4. the boys age is 11, which is of course a prime number and ties into the movie title theory I found. Primes have some part to play in decoding this. (same with the "prime of your life" line as well)

Credit to L.Boomer

The one thing he didn't get that seems important to me. How many times did he friggin' repeat "cross words"? That's a strange phrase and could quite as easily be crosswords! Does this turn into/relate to a crossword puzzle?

Notes: Unless I'm mistaken (I've copied and pasted these numbers so many times and rearranged them in various ways, it's possible I've made a mistake somewhere), there are 127 digits now. 127 is itself prime (oy). Among the implications in this is that there is no way that we're going to rearrange them into any sort of rectangle. I scoured Wikipedia looking at their ciphers that don't need supercomputers to decode (aka, Classical Ciphers) and almost all turn letters into other letters. Some go through a numeric stage, and this could be halfway-through. Even then almost all of them turn a single letter into two numbers, which would provide us with an even number of digits.

The only encoding method I found that looks promising and can generate an odd number of digits is the Straddling Checkerboard.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straddling_checkerboard

I believe that I have proven that, in its current form, the numbers cannot be encoded this way. Either there's another transformation, I've screwed up my local copy of the numbers, or I'm off here. I haven't proven anything, I just don't know the arrangement of letters, if it is the right way to decode this.

Just sharing what I've (not) found so far. I'm not the only one still looking at this, am I?

No, you are not the only one, at least I am still at it..
How did you reduce it to 127 digits though?
If it is by only taking the primes, then how big primes were there and how did you find the primes in it?
Edit: Also, did somebody already find out exactly What is "The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie" of the movie title, if it is a traceable number, then that might be our key (or part of it). (me's going to google a bit.)

I'm definitely still in the game, but since I'm not great with normal codes and I've tried everything I could think of, I'm going to have to rely on people with more skills for this sort of thing.

EDIT: Travis' blog has been updated. Not so sure I like the somewhat insulting nature of the entry. It's one thing for Synthesis to be insulting, that's within character, but if this is supposed to be Travis posting...

It is a bit insulting, and not too helpful to me personally, but I don't think Travis wrote it. Unless I'm mistaken, the title 'Page From the Synthesis Joke Book' means that it was written by Synthesis. I wonder how Travis got it?

Yeah, I'm not sure I like the tone either. Synthesis can take that approach to mock and poke fun at the players, but if Travis is... I haven't given up though, I'm just Bang Head Cursing Bang Head Cursing like I think a lot of us are.

Also, I was looking around for the movie and the song last night to see if I could dl either, and I didn't have any luck. The only thing I found was an original LP on ebay for $99. This is a fun game and all, but I don't think I'll be forking over that kind of money just to hear the song... $1, maybe... Wink

I don't think we need to see the movie or listen to the song, if it is about that, the prime is propably Jean Brodie's age..

The tone of the post is not insulting from Travises part, it is what it says it is, a page from the Synthesis Jokebook, I guess the crossword 'joke' is the only meaningful one.. In the joke the answer is two times across in the puzzle, other time reversed, perhaps the same goes for our digits, but where's the three down? And weren't we supposed to remove the linefeeds..? Weird. Confused

Edit: Oh, and perhaps the thing about not losing shape on formatting after that too.

Ok, so I decided to try something really different... After reading Travis' latest blog entry and
Quote:
"when you reformat a hard drive, it still keeps the same structure, much like when the architect demolishes a block of houses, the size and shape remains exactly the same. they change the shape and go for a new shape ONLY when they want to completely erase the past."
sticking out, I just took the grid (omitting any whitespace) and took out everything but the 2's and 3's to see if there was some sort of picture...

I've talked to another player and we see the same thing - what looks like a 'sniper' or someone holding up a gun - like a rifle, sort of a profile view. I don't know if it's anything or not (or what it could possibly mean), but we thought we should share.

You have to show us how you arrived at your answer, I for one know that I'm extremely curious!

As am I. Do share with the rest of the class. We're apparently the dunces of the 10 year old set, so...

You sure do, And I do too! Very Happy

If you tell us how you did it, perhaps we could decipher part of it ourselves.. Rolling Eyes

Edit:
Hmm.. Isn't that fast to decipher or kadarom had some other business in between.. Makes good time for some Last minute guesses: Wink
- 3toucans -> 1sixpack duplets forming triplets, divide to six-long parts
- 10 kinds of people in binary -> two kinds normally, dunno.
- Sports-event pecentages relate to the number frequencies, perhaps the 15% are the second and third row for the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straddling_checkerboard mentioned earlier and rest are not toucans, but single numbers, or something.
- two across and three down, no idea
- the rest.. Don't know exactly, there is certainly something about the shape too, though..
