Well, I'm getting
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
"You have done well. But did you clear the rotating cleartext? Please clear it. Thank you." I used the key "digitalfortress" on the first paragraph currently on the blog.

First paraghraph enciphered:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
youhavedonewell. butdidyoucleartherotatingcleartext?Please clear it.Thank you.

The key was:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
digitalfortress

if you use an applet to decipher, beware of it using letters from the key to commas and questionmarks..Smile
I'll see if this goes for the next paragraph, too.
Edit: What ever the paragraph means, I'm off to sleep now.. till tomorrow.Smile

Rotating cleartext was mentioned in the novel as the supposed (this was later proven to be untrue) reason why Digital Fortress was un-brute-forceable. Basically, the code would encrypt to what looked like nonsense to the computer, because *gasp* it was also encrypted.

My guess is that the second paragraph is double-encrypted, and we've missed somewhere where we should now know the keys to both halves.

More information:

Quote:
"Unless the computer guesses the correct key but just keeps guessing because it doesn't realize it found the right key." Strathmore looked bleak. "I think this algorithm has got a rotating cleartext."
Susan gaped.
The notion of a rotating cleartext function was first put forth in an obscure, 1987 paper by a Hungarian mathematician, Josef Harne. Because brute-force computers broke codes by examining cleartext for identifiable word patterns, Harne proposed an encryption algorithm that, in addition to encrypting, shifted decrypted cleartext over a time variant. In theory, the perpetual mutation would ensure that the attacking computer would never locate recognizable word patterns and thus never know when it had found the proper key. The concept was somewhat like the idea of colonizing Mars—fathomable on an intellectual level, but, at present, well beyond human ability.

The whole thing is now changed, and four hours of my work gone with it. Oh, well. I'll see what everything says now...

Hmm, shifted over a time variant?

Something strange is going on here. Why are these codes changing? And so frequently?

Edit: It hasn't completely changed, I'm sure of it. There was one code that stood out to me before, because of the odd placement of the numbers '4'. One was 4nc and I remember thinking that that must be '4th' and trying to logically deduce the rest.

Before, it was the 4th or 5th paragraph. It's now #1. I think that the paragraphs are just being moved around.

Implication: The output of one paragraph is not necessarily the key to the immediate next paragraph. But hey, all your work may not be completely lost, just rearranged.

Got it:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Using "abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz" as the key, the message reads:

"You have solved the level 4 encryption required for this document. This will explain the 4th level theory and application of objectified assemblage.

Historical Ancestry of Objectified Assemblage

Objectified assemblage traces its roots back to the Surrealistic and Dadaism movements. Assemblage as a found art is in a similar vein, but with using found real world objects.

Surrealism works as a visual representation, using objects of meaning to the artist or artist responsible for the work of art. The interpretation could be a mere visual distortion all the way to the usage of memory touchstones that the artist finds meaningful. This creates a juxptaposition unlikely to be found in the normal human condition and consequently creating new meanings which may or may not be what the original artist intended. The new meanings intended by the artist depended on their own personal meaning of the memory touchstone. The viewer of the artwork will have an entirely different set of memory touchstones, and gain a different set of intepretations.

Dadaism strove more for an anti-meaning to artwork, a sort of metaphorical middle finger to art and the meanings of art. Ironically, such work would have its own meaning, even though it would strive to have no meaning.

Assemblage bears a relationship with surrealism of using objects and their juxtaposition to create meaning. The difference being the use of found art, real objects that create the artistic meanings by being in physical proximity to each other, rather than being in the form of a painting or drawing. In effect, an assemblage can be likened to a physical representation of surrealism.

Objectified Assemblage: theory and application

Objectified assemblage is the direct application of assemblage techniques to provoke a certain reaction from a target audience, whether it be a single person or a large group. This method is based on the fact that certain symbols are universal, on the subconscious level. When these symbols are paired togehter or with other symbols added, certain reactions can be evoked.

A modern group that practice audio collages and assemblage is Negativland. Their work tends to be quite menacing, using disjointed sound clips and common household items or famous audio clips to help provide a new message not intended in the original material. This group really helped pioneer modern audio assemblage as compared to music concrete by providing extended meanings as compared to simple random sounds to evoke free associations and moods.

A woodworking shop in Long Beach in the 1980's was able to provide one of the first practical demonstrations of objectified assemblage with known symbols. Their typical window display involved a sandy desert scene with live snakes and decapitated doll heads scattered around. This juxtaposition makes use of two very strong symbolisms tied together. The doll heads evoke a playroom of a long dead little girl, most likely living within a Victorian mansion in the 1920's. This immediately will bring a feeling of sadness tinged with loneliness as to the long lost time period of the unknown little girl.

Snakes in a desert setting represent virile life in at appears to be a dead place. The snake is also symbolic of the sexual element.

The aspect of the unknown little girl represents innocence with the live snakes being the menace of the future, of virility, of sex invading the innocence of her world.

The practical application may be for the sending of messages or disabling an enemy action or performing a chain of events goal by the application of objectified assemblage. This works because the typical training or symbolisms set in place in a person tend to be fairly standard. This is even more evident in the case of specialized training for a field. On knowing their curriculum, it is possible to craft specialized assemblages that will combine with their training, creating an almost surrealistic new state.

An early concept utilizing this was explained in the nonfiction short story "Chico LeFleur Talks Funny". It tells of a street gang using some basic principles of objectified assemblage. Instead of using random word associations, they would instead perform attacks on a dual front, mimicking the body language of a law enforcement officer they are confronting with a full second delay, and using language containing unspoken threats and harassment without utilizing any obvious verbal weapons. The gang would invariably cause themselves to be subjects of police brutality due to the way they were able to master the law enforcement types as mere psychological puppets as the law enforcement types would discover themselves becoming enraged without being able to spot the reason. Objectified assemblage is more the preferred technique used as the clan members usually do not meet law enforcement personnel face to face, preferring the covert security ops.

One very easy target is military or law enforcement training. This is because the training is designed to give an action/reaction form of responses. One more primitive method which forms the basis of this is Sun Tzu's book "The Art of War" which shows strategies for dealing with situations. This book can give insight on the military and law enforcement mind. In effect, one can easily outfox by the simple fact that the trained responses are predictable, to a point. Conceptually, they are fully predictable. This makes applied assemblage much more effective as their training is targeted to turn against them when they are presented with situations that they have no precedent for, not even a conceptual precedent.

An exhaustive list of code and responses would serve no useful purpose in this treatise, nor would it benefit the reader. The point is to apply the basic concepts as an applicable tool to serve the purposes. The basic example shown above of the Barbie doll heads and snakes shows an example of such analyses. Most of the assemblage concepts you will create will be on the spur of the moment. Even with sending a right or wrong message, there will be some sort of a response. If a non desired response is given, merely modify or create a new assemblage to steer the responses toward the desired goals. Usually, a mere verbal description of the assemblage is enough to trigger the associations. The author's personal favorite is the physical item of placing a record player within the house of the target and have a large horseshoe crab on it, set to medium speed. This effect now works strongly, now that record players are no longer as common a house item as the 1960's to 1970's.

If further reading is required, the study of past chain of events and campaigns is highly suggested. The amortization of the cause/effect relationships of the objectified assemblage patterns. Practicing with your friends and others within the clans is also an excellent move, a sort of free form association to see what results come out. The results can be sent to other clans in the recording books to add to the pools of knowledge. This also helps sharpen the craft as new associations and responses can be studied and tested against training archetypes."

Wow, good solve guys, I need to stop sleeping through these. I think this should show Synthesis that we are a bit brighter than their average 10 year old.

That might be something like the chair you have in front of your computer.. It kinda feels like an objectified assemblage to lit an icily tingling fire inside your chair, having you move out from your computer.. (That's what it's doing to me.. Off to shopping.. Razz )

Icicle line is from the extended version of Clowns & Ballerinas, found on the Toywar CD, by Negativland.

Snuggles: look for the U2 radio edit of Casey Kasem

We want: from "Fight Back" by Negativland
I don't think we're through with the puzzle.
The songs/titles may be an assemblage.

They're in an in-game folder.
They don't seem to have any connection to the encoding.
S1547NY5 made a second post on them.

Wait... Hold the phone. Remember the diagrams? With the input/output? how many letters did the input need? Would Negativland fit?

Anyone have a copy of these diagrams?
I never saw them.

And how long were they up?
Were they a mistake/later puzzle?

Hey guys, asked to pass this along, hopefully not a violation of ToS, this is a little grey to me since it's not really IG information, though it is realted to the game and given to me by a PM. Either way, this isn't meant to be a violation and if it is for any reason feel free to delete it:
