[INFO] The Hunt Endgame I was talking to the guys in the Comic-Con booth, here in San Diego, and discussing various aspects of the game, when one of the guys mentioned something interesting regarding the overall hunt:
(This isn't a mega spoiler or anything, but if you want to avoid having prior knowledge of how the hunt is going to turn out, don't read)
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The cube is very specifically a real world object. It is definitely buried somewhere on the face of the planet, and has been for some time.
His words, quoted from the creator, imply that there is ONE cube out there. (The whole equal opportunity to win thing gives me great pause here regarding locations, unless there is not an equal opportunity in which case it could be anywhere)
This is going to be rough... at least in the Volvo hunt, the object you're looking for is a little bigger than (10cm)^3. Think about the math here, even a GPS location that is ONE / THOUSANDTHS of a minute off will be 1.8 meters off. That's 18 times the length of the cube. Hopefully it'll be metal or something so we can use a metal detector, otherwise we're going to need a lot of shovels...
I think this is the first really concrete confirmation of a couple of random tidbits we've heard so far.
(Edited the speculated cube size, forgot the ()'s)

I think the cube will be in a specific well known place or there will be definite directions to it.

I'm not sure the small size of the cube need be a big problem. The Masquerade rabbit was only about 5" long and quite a snug fit in its box, and a projected shadow was enough to locate that. Though admittedly one person did dig and miss it before it was finally found. Anyhoo, my point is there must be a plethora of ways to describe a location precisely enough, and doubtless that'll be carefully worked in.

I already mentioned this over in the perplex city forums. My gf talked to Michael Smith at some PR awards bash a couple of weeks ago, and he confirmed that it is a real life object, that has already been buried. He even said he buried it himself.
Chances are it'll be in one of two places:
1) A really remote place so no-one will find it
2) (I think this is more likely) A fairly public/well watched space, so that someone know when it's been found.
Michaal also said that it's going to reach it's climax fairly soon (in a few months or so)

Who do you contact when it's been found

I'm guessing you send out an e-mail, and CC in all the CRT and MindCandy....
I'm guessing that they'll know when you found it though, so it won't be a problem.

Maybe it'll just show up in your mailbox once you've figured it out

anyone interested in digging up Mr. Smith's back yard?
(forgive me... it needed to be said..)
With the technology they're using for the San Francisco event, they've probably got the cube tagged so they know if (and where) it moves.
and technically, you do not receive the reward for merely finding the cube. you have to find it and then "return it to Mind Candy" in order to receive the prize.

[TIAG]I remember reading an article a LONG time ago, I think it was an interview with someone who worked at mindcandy, saying they witnessed the burial of the cube.[/TIAG]

It's topics like these that make me wonder what happens if someone finds the Cube and decides not to give it back. I mean, it's insanely unlikely, but...

Tsk...nobody at Mind Candy witnessed the burial of the cube!
Remember, they have no idea where it is [/TINAG]

Hm, I actually don't believe this is spoiler information.
The word "buried" has been used regarding the Receda Cube by a host of entities over the past couple of years, including the Mind Candy website, PXC.com, Michael Smith on the Culture Show & Gadgetell interview advertisements, etc. However, further clarification is always desirable
Poozle, I suspect this is the article you're thinking of...

I'd just like to point out that the writer of the article doesn't specify *what* was buried. Just that something was buried.
It might not be the cube at all...

Some time ago now I vaguely remember in one of the forums someone found some numbers that he used on google that pin pointed a specific spot near an intersection in I think D.C near some national centre. It is an a public place and is often watched (likely CCTV) and is or was in an open space.
Seems a possible place for the cube to be buried or the whole thing is fake like Receda being Ansjborgen for Bird Flu.
