I had a blast at the live event, but it was also the first time I had done anything PXC related. I hadn't really been interested in picking it up until I heard about the live event, and only just caught up on the plot (via the podcasts) literally on the drive up to SF.

The main goal of my day was really to catch up with old Unfiction friends that I only get to see once a year, and meet some new faces. This was a resounding success, and I'm glad to have had so much fun with Squad D (Myself, Ashin, and Ranger D).

The scavenger hunt was interesting, but I was really hoping that the answers we picked up would have come together in some sort of metapuzzle, rather than just all counting towards a 100% completion mark. The day didn't seem very story-oriented, but more of an event to propel the game rather than inform it.

I think a lot of people agree that the event was fun, but ended a bit underwhelmingly, although I think I really wouldn't have been satisfied myself unless the now Earthbound 3P agents had kidnapped Adrian from the Marina Sports Bar and Grill while he was in the can, leaving a cryptographic ransom note on the urinal for us to solve.

Ultimately, what I think I'm getting at is that the day involved a lot of work, and a lot of fun, that ultimately gets swallowed up in {link fixed or link lost}, with no further repercussions or followup to the specific things we did that day.

I do hope that the Long Now shows up somewhere, because we had a hell of a time with that clue.

Well the great thing about it being slightly seperated from the story is that you didn't get given some dodgy morse code which was impossible to translate. Be glad of this, It's really not fair when about 7 people transcribed it and we still couldn't piece it together.

Sounds like the guys who went to SF had lots of fun. I'm pleased you all did, I wish I could have been there myself Smile

Hmm, seems to be a general happy feeling about the event, albeit with a few grumbles. I was going to be online but real life came first Smile Well done to everyone who took part and reactulised the link - the helicopers were pretty cool. I wish someone had a video of the moment everyones phone rang!

Anyway, just thought people might find this interesting, don't know how many of you check Adrians blog regulary...

Some San Francisco thoughts:

Despite being a fairly small city, it's very difficult to get around. We used a car for most of the time, but this only worked because we had a person who was happy driving us around all the time. As for public transport, it was initially very confusing. Here were some questions: What's the difference between the MUNI and the BART? Do they run on the same lines? Can you get passes for both? Does the MUNI include buses? Are those metro trains in the MUNI or the BART? Is the F-Market tram a bus or a train? All pretty ridiculous, and a far cry from the relative simplicity of Transport for London.

Cycling seems like it might work, although that depends on whether you can bypass hills. It's a much better bet for exploring the surrounding areas - I cycled for 20 miles across the Golden Gate Bridge, Sausalito and Tiburon, which was an excellent and healthy way to decompress after the event.

San Francisco has the highest number of crazies per square foot than any other city I've been to. I can think of a few explanations for this, but I'm not convinced by any of them.

With the weak dollar, food and drink everywhere is positively cheap. In fact, rents and house prices also seem fine. Of course, this is compared to London, the most expensive interesting place to live in the world, but still - let no San Franciscan complain of high prices ever again.

Organising the largest Perplex City live event ever, in a city that's over 5000 miles away from our base, was incredibly difficult. It was even more difficult given that we didn't have any staff based on the west coast - which is, of course, also eight hours behind the UK. Despite all of the pain incurred while setting it up, I think it was a success - we had a great response from people there, who were glad to see us hold a major event in the US. Indeed, it's worth noting that there are now about as many Perplex City players in the US as there are in the UK. Not everything worked as planned, which I am sorry about, but the event was incredibly ambitious (major offline live event simultaneous with online event? It's tricky when you do it for the first time) and the important thing is that people had fun.

With 40,000 players, Perplex City is no longer a small game by any measure. Expectations have risen, and we have to raise our game to meet them. I read all the feedback that I can, and have already spent a lot of time thinking about how to do better for future events. However, the fact that we had such a good response from the players in San Francisco means that we're obviously doing something right.

One of the best things about the event was the sheer mix of people there - there were families galore, from babies and infants to grandparents, all working together; there were men and women in equal number; and there were people from all backgrounds. There aren't many games out there that'll bring people together like that for a common (and fun) cause.

There is one knocking about somewhere I'm sure.

I saw the one where everyone was watching Sente and then got up, but you can't actually see the phones ringing, or anyones responses. Is there another?

In that case I don't think there is one knocking about anywhere.

BrianEnigma's video shows people leaving the theater. I have video in which you can hear my phone ring, which makes me put the camera down so you don't see people tearing out of the theater. I was on the other side from Brian, and people were really running to get outside.

I have a full video of the whole presentation and phone ringing from start to getting outside, but it's 50M. Where should I put it? seems a little large for uF.

You can try hosting it on the wiki, but it might have file size restrictions. Maybe YouTube?

You can use www.youtube.com, but their site is down right now for upgrades. I would recommend Google Video, there is no limit to the size of video you can upload there.

I tried to keep up with the thread on unfiction but couldn't cope with juggling all the open windows.

As someone new to ARGs I was put off the IRC thing due to not knowing much about it, and from the comments of people at the Borders Launch it seems to be an exclusive club where novices are not welcomed. That may not be the case but it is the impression that many of us newbies have.

The whole point of having a seperate IRC room was so that everyone would be welcome, that we wouldnt just be inviting everyone into an already established room such as #syzygy. Having said that, novices are quite welcome in both places.

And yes, it was hard to juggle the windows, but if you couldnt cope with the single thread on unfiction, then any other attempts to organise ourselves such as the wiki page, would have been even more complicated. Such if life with these kind of events, you need to be ready to have three IRC windows, 10 browser tabs and a notebook ready - they're our tools, and the only simpler way would have been to go to the event itself.

I agree with a lot of what the other room ops have said, we tried our hardest with what was given, no one was forced to use those rooms but I do think that if they had been used properly they would have been very helpful, and hey, we won, so it can't have gone too badly?
MC didn't have to do anything for us online, so whilst I understand constructive criticism (although most of this should probably be directed towards Mind Candy and not the people who voluntarily gave up their Saturday night to help op the room) I don't see what everyones opining about...

rach =)

Posted the video on Google instead of the Wiki so as to not destroy the Wiki bandwidth.

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-4359400450068162975

The funny part: It turns out my cell phone responds to getting calls about 2-3 seconds before most other peoples phones. I also have the most obnoxious and loud ring tone ever (the chorus to Static-X Dirthouse), which I use as an alarm clock since I always have my phone on vibrate. Because we were running around a lot I turned my ringer on so I could hear it, but when it went off during the presentation it was so disruptive that Adrian Hon looked at me, as well I think just about everyone else in the theatre. But then everyone elses phone went off too. So you can see in the video me shifting around trying to get my cell phone to shut up since I thought I was being "that guy".

All I get is "This video is not currently available"

Crying or Very sad

Well, that's not -ALL- I get.

I get a "Please try again later" as well. Google's so polite.

EDIT: Never mind, works now. Guess I was too quick.
