[UPDATE] Sentinel - 17 Aug 06 - Finlay Out

Quote:

Finlay Abandons Race Amid Spying Rumours
By ROBERTO GOODWIN

After weeks of speculation as to the status of Finlay's quiet campaign office, erstwhile council candidate Douglass Finlay officially withdrew his candidacy today. "I still maintain that the allegations against me are categorically untrue," he said, "but I've been tried and convicted by the press, and it's clear that I should focus on clearing my good name right now instead of seeking public office."

He added that he would not throw his support behind either remaining candidate for the Council Leader post, saying that he would not want to taint his favoured candidate's chances. He also asserted that he would run again in the future: "Once I've got all this sorted out, I'm going to be back. You can't stop me next time," he said.

Meanwhile, sources from inside Finlay's faltering camp have said that Finlay has been notified that the police investigation into his campaign's activities have nearly concluded, and that he could be arrested and charged as early as next week. Finlay has been under investigation for allegedly pledging to use his office to profit his former business associates, and for planning and possibly executing a spying campaign against sitting members of the City Council. Revelation of these activities came through the leak of documents detailing these schemes to the press from a campaign insider.

With mere weeks to go before the council elections, political analysts say that the now two-way race for Council Leader should be a close match. "[Sitting Council Leader Camryn] Scott and [Council Member Nathan] Earlywine have to choose now how to go after Finlay's supporters, now," said Finlay's former campaign manager, Anton Kaneda. "It may be that the wisest choice for each of them is do nothing at all. Better not to appear to change positions to attract this new pool of loose votes, and stay true to their original messages."

The new frontrunner for Roy Yolen's council seat, which Finlay had been running for, is Natasha Heme, a neophyte politician who is running on a policy of increasing education spending for younger children while cutting back on physical infrastructure and public works spending.

BANATU BANANAS?

I was disappointed to read about the efforts of Mr. Leo Banatu in this week's Sentinel, a gentleman so insecure with his current way of life, that he would create a public spectacle in protest of an event which should bring nations closer together. Mr. Banatu claims that his people have "lost their self-reliance and independence" and perhaps that is a good thing, a culture can very easily stagnate itself when it refuses outside influence.

We must bear in mind that a loosening of paperwork requirements for foreign visitors is not only long overdue but a positive step in the right direction. I agree that we should never forget events from the past for if we did, how could we learn from them? To mindlessly cling to ideals, however, is just as dangerous.

With recent events on Earth and a hostile presence from your world breaking through, I would hope that Mr. Banatu will realize that the only hope anyone has for the Receda Cube being returned safely is by trusting and depending on 'outsiders'. To this end I would ask him to abandon his vigil out of respect for those very outsiders he would protest against, and are now quite possibly risking their lives to restore the Cube to its rightful place.

EARTH GRIEVES

Loss is the hardest human emotion to bear yet, at the same time, is the strongest foundation upon which the rest of the experience called "life" is built. We fear it, but by living through it we grow stronger. We remember it, and in doing so take joy from all the things both large and small that surround us on a daily basis. Loss reaches deep into us to pull out parts of us we forget we have, but without it we wouldn't be the spirits that we are.

It is strange, then, to be ripped at by the loss of someone that we here on Earth never had the chance to meet in person. Anna Heath was more than just a member of the Academy for many of us, more than a colleague sharing simply in the same goal. Through her writing, her puzzles, and her deeds, she became a friend, a mentor and often even someone you expected to bump into on the street here on Earth.

The dedication of Anna reminds us of the courage within all of us. The loss of her reminds us of what is at stake, and that this is not just a game. The way in which she was taken from us spurs us on with ever more vigour, having woken up to a sober alarm call that highlights the dangerous conclusions that are ever possible in such interesting times.

It is a sad and dark time, but a united legion of Earth-bound cube-hunters stands ever more resilient to bring this matter to a conclusion, and to bring the guilty to justice. In these times, Perplex City has never felt closer to Earth.
scribe, Earth
AND FROM THE CRACKPOT DEPARTMENT...

This is an open letter from the people of Earth to the Perplexian secret society known as the Third Power. Recently, you disrupted a vital communications link and made threats against the well-being of the agents of CRT-EarthDiv. I and my fellow members of CRT-EarthDiv wish to send you this message:

We on Earth don't take kindly to threats. In fact, we have stood up to greater threats than you and have come out on top.

Send all the agents you like to attempt to recover the Receda Cube -- we will be here to oppose them every step of the way.

For every plan you have, we have three.

For every agent you send, we have ten.

For every act of sabotage you commit, we can come up with five ways to work around them.

In short, we are smarter, faster, more numerous, and better equipped than you -- the speed with which we effected the activation of the San Francisco Datalink is proof of that.

We can go places you can't. We can do things you won't. And above all, we are willing to do anything and risk everything to keep the Receda Cube out of your hands -- we'll risk our homes, our countries, and even our lives.

We're experts at this sort of thing -- if you've studied our history, you should know that. We've stopped power-hungry madmen before, and we're willing to do it again.

So come, Third Power. Bring your best agents to Earth, and watch them fail -- because your best just isn't good enough.
PFC Peter Walker, Earth

Ermmmmmm, they can now go anywhere we can go and anywhere on perplex city, so they win that round, also, most of perplex city will be VERY confused by that letter, they know nothing of the wormhole and as such won't know about agents travelling to earth.

See below, my mistake

Oh really?

Rumours from highly-placed Academy sources also suggest that the blackout was concurrent with a wormhole to Earth opening and one or more persons transiting to Earth through it.

I think that - thanks to that article - Perplex City does know about it, Poozle.

Just a bit of spec: could there be something going on at the Newguard Ruins at the end of the month? No one knows exactly what the ruins are, but it is agreed to be an old fortress that has been rebuilt multiple times.

Just a thought.

Ya I am looking at the Seven Bridges card now (121) and on the back of Chemirstry Experiment. It seems like there could be something built on those two Islands. Also the names of the bridges are really wierd, i.e. Light Bridge, Dark Bridgem Bew Brudge ect. Maybe there is something there that is worth checking out?

My mistake, I obviously didn't read the article properly.

Also, there is this from the back of card 150 (A Journey In The Desert; card is one square SW of the bridges):

Quote:
The River Mazy Part 2

Being relatively shallow, it is not difficult to build tunnels underneath the River Mazy. As a result, there are numerous tunnels connecting subway and road services north and south of the river, and evidence from records and microgravity studies indicates the exisence of several older tunnels.

Older tunnels? Intriguing ... possible physical connection between the bridges and Gillitt Road?

I wouldn't worry, PFC stands for Private (First Class). Our boy Peter is in the Marines or the Army, he's got plenty of friends to help out in case of trouble Smile
