alright looks to me like we need to line up colors in lines.. so i'm gonna take a crack, and i won't email scarlett until we get some feedback (wouldn't want uncle sanjean to wake up!!!)

top center: stays the way it is.

upper middle left: quarter turn counter clockwise

upper middle right: 1/2 turn

lower middle right: 1/2 turn

lower middle left: quarter turn clockwise

lower center: quarter turn counter clockwise

i'm getting messed up since there are more than 4 colors...
i count.. light blue, blue, light purple, purple, pink, dark pink...

i dunno guys, tell me what you think..

are you aiming for 3 sets of mirror images, using the sea as the plane of reflection ?

the quickest way i can see to achieve that is:

top: 90deg anticlockwise
upper left: 90deg anticlockwise
lower left: 180deg

ok - so i just saw this bit:

need to line up colors in lines

doh, ignore me Smile

that bit about 'lay sorrowe to rest' smells like a clue to me.

the only thing i can find that looks vaguely likely is in a Tess of the d'Urbervilles study guide.

http://www.sparknotes.com/lit/tess/section4.rhtml

being a literary ignoramus, does the story of tess in any way coincide with 'Granier ... seducing the daughters of his political rivals' ?

i had a quick scan of the overview, and it didn't look too likely.

i think i'm onboard the tangent express heading for deadendsville...

I can still see the image through scarlett's site.

as for the groups of 4, they aren't exactly opposite of each other..

top center and bottom center have the same 4 colors
upper middle left cooresponds to lower middle right
upper middle right cooresponds to lower middle left
but these last 2 pairs are turned in such a way that they can't be made to face opposite of each other.

as with upper middle left the colors go (clockwise from top): Purple, Light Purple, Pink, Light Blue. the cooresponding block: Light Blue, Pink, Light Purple, Purple. when you turn one to fit the other, the colors will point in the same direction. that is if you put Purple on top in both, Light Purple will be on the right on both pieces...

the same goes for upper middle right and lower middle left.

am I analyzing this too much? haha

Based on the reflections and opposites observations, if you were to:

Turn the bottom square 90 degrees CCW,
Turn the bottom-left square 90 degrees CCW, and
Turn the bottom-right square 180 degrees

You'd get 3 sets of reflections, along different axes through the middle. If you see where I'm coming from.

Scarlett's Granier Painting Puzzle

Perhaps a puzzle

Uncle Sanjean finally found a moment to give me the tour of the house this morning. As I suspected, he gave me an in-depth analysis of how Anthony Granier supervised the reconstruction of the city's sewer system, and the impact of his later novels on the burgeoning experimentation in the visual arts. But when I asked about how Granier took up seducing the daughters of his political rivals and then mentioning it up on the council floor, or how his second wife left him because she was jealous of his relationship with Vianne Adamek, my uncle just harrumphed and said he "couldn't possibly comment."

Anyway, there was one thing I saw that really piqued my curiosity. There's a funny bit of an alcove in the hall outside my aunt and uncle's bedroom. In there is a picture with a sort of mosaic frame, permanently fixed to the wall. My uncle showed it to me and said that it's a picture of the place where Granier retreated to write his last novel, Lay Sorrowe to Rest. If you look carefully, you can kind of see a very tiny seam running horizontally above and below it. Anyway, Uncle laughed when he saw me looking at it so closely and said my mother always thought there might be something there, too, when they were children, but they weren't allowed to touch the antiquities in the house for fear they'd damage something.

I crept back a bit later in the day and tried to find a way to open it, but none of the tiles seems to be buttons or anything like that. I did notice, though, that there are six more prominent squares of four tiles each - you'll see in the picture - and it's hard to get them to budge, but if you push very hard, they turn a bit. I didn't want to stand there in front of their bedroom fiddling with it all night, it would be rude. Sooo I'm just wondering if you'd take a look at it and see if you can come up with any good ideas on how it might work, and let me know. Smile I really don't want them to find me standing outside their bedroom scratching at the door, though, so try to be sure you've got the right answer before you send me there!

Edit: In merging the replies from the update thread to this, the puzzle thread, things got pasted in in chronological order. This should have been the first thing in the thread.

The non-popping-out tiles are all checkerboard, pink/blue. If you ignore the pop-out tiles' internal groupings, the (a) way to make the six blocks match the background tiles in a checkerboard fashion (for what it's worth) would be:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Top: Leave
Mid. Right upper: 90 deg ccw
Mid. Right lower: 90 deg ccw
Mid. Left upper: 90 deg cw
Mid. Left lower: 180 deg
Bottom: 90 deg ccw

I quickly whipped together this thing to test out how the different tile rotations look.

Click to rotate clockwise, right-click to rotate anti-clockwise. You'll need Shockwave (yeah, I know... but it was the quickest way I had of doing it).

That is great Daffy. Smile It is much faster than rotating various layers in a graphics package (as I was doing before).

On the archive page, it seems the image won't load properly. If you go to the home page, it works just fine.
