[trailhead?] A Scanner Darkly

I was channel surfing earlier when I saw some entertainment gurus bantering about A Scanner Darkly. Now, I've been looking for an ARG for the past couple weeks, and this seemed like the perfect sort of material. So I check out the homepage, and after a little bit of poking around there's some character bios laid out like surveilance records. After a little bit more poking around, an instant message window pops up asking me if I have a friend behaving strangely, and when I say I do, it tells me to go to the Substance D section, and I'll find what I need there. Substance D is the section of the site with all of the downloads... I'm thinking one (or more) might potentially lead to other resources. There's also a couple other parts of the site that encourage interaction in an ARG-ish manner, and interspersed all throughout are various bits of text that seem encoded. Someone more experienced than I should probably give it a look...

The link to the possible trailhead can be found here.

EDIT: After a little more looking around, it looks like it could go either way. There's a couple "psych tests" which were done in a largely ARG-ish matter... until I got through one of them and it said I unlocked something to do with one of the characters. Trying to instant-message Fred again (he clammed up after the Substance D tidbit) gets him to reveal a bit of paranoia as he laments about the chat being monitored. I'll keep this updated in case it turns out to be a little more in-depth than just flash games on the one webpage...

EDIT 2: It's the questionaire, not the hopped-up Rhorshach test that gets Fred to send more instant messages. Hopefully, this will pan out to something by the time I finish the different permutations on the quiz.

EDIT 3: Got through all of the quizzes, and when that's finished Fred sends instant messages more or less every time you click a viable link. Unfortunately, I lost my progress on the site when I was check to see if sending an ecard to myself would trigger a scripted event (it very well might, I don't know since apparently there's an individual password thing that's easy to miss). I do get the the general idea that there's more that I missed. While some tasks get a scripted IM, other tasks get nothing.

Still, when I finished unlocking all of the characters in the Room 203 quiz it said I was closer to unravelling the secret of the game and I should keep an eye out for more info from the underground... It could just be something to generate more interest in the movie and it could very well be that the site is it... But this strikes me as having a very high chance of extending far past the homepage for an ARG. Someone should definitely check this out...

This is a very interesting.....thing....I think that you are correct in suggesting that this is an ARG, but I am unsure myself.

I'm gonna chalk it up to another "immersive experience". As companies get more clued in to the fact that consumers want something they can interact with, you'll see a lot more of these. They may not necessarily turn out to be ARGs though.

On another note, ANYTHING written by Philip K. Dick would make killer plot for an ARG. Would be a great idea, if anyone's listening... Wink

As much as I hoped this would be true, I'm afraid that it probably isn't. The chatter is the biggest clue that it might be, and it seems that he randomly tells you that you need something, and recommends that you do something on the site to help yourself out. It seems like he's just trying to be "helpful" and point you to sections of the site that you might not have found yourself.

They are watching us, they being game developers so they can see what we like/ don't like, etc. That would be fun the PKD novel ARG.
