This can always turn out to be a social experiment and they are simply waiting for some crazy guy to show up with loads of money to sponsor them. Or studying meme-spreading... or something like that.

Ok I didn't see (and Search didn't find) this yet.
I see that the images directory is open too:
http://www.steorn.net/images

Lots of stuff in there including a sizeable .zip which I assumecontains all of the images in the directory(downloading now to see). There are also a few images like this one that are HUGE (1984x3000 px)! Way bigger than you'd expect to be floating in a company's webserver's images dir.

I still don't know what all this means, but I do believe that we are supposed to be digging through the site, ARG or not.

Edit: And I must add that I find it odd that the .com url redirects to the .net url. I would think everything would redirect to .com. Call me .com-centric.
Oooh and there is a Managment Login Portal page at: http://www.steorn.org/ but please folks lets make sure that this is in fact an ARG before anyone starts trying to hack the login.

Do you think it could have been the zip file that is available to download on the press page? It contains all the images of the 'team' in their original sizes and formats. I downloaded it the other day and I think it was almost 60 Mbs.

The one I was trying to download was 16.xMBs.
Is the press zip till available for download? Can you post a file listing from the zip? I wanna compare it to the images dir listing.

Wow mass spammings has commenced on the steorn boards. Seems one guy is a complete idiot. He slags both those for and against this claim even though he's against it himself. The spammer vowes to return every night till Steron replies, otherwise there will be droves of spamm waiting for the Steorn admins.

Looks like the spammers won...

When you attempt to access the forums page the following error is thrown up:

Or maybe not. The forum seems to be working now. Helpfully, it allowed me to see a post about http://web.archive.org/web/20010303074205/http://www.steorn.com/index.html

Might help to clear some things up.

Hey, havent seen anybody post this, it's an article from Wired.com. Hope this is a game, but seems like it might actually be real. Great way to start a game if it isn't though.

It was on wired yesterday, saw it before i saw this thread, looks like it was put up on Monday 21st anyway.

still don't think this is an ARG and the number of bogus scientists registering is only clogging up the system, but hey - I'm bored so...

I did some google caches:

Japanese patents?

Perhaps - just perhaps... someone else developed the technology and is using them to push it. I'm still not fighting the idea, I would love for it to be true - screw laws of physics ... laws are meant to be broke and when it comes to physics the reason that many things become laws is because an idea is proven or can't be disproven - at least until someone realizes another way to approach the problem, then all the possibilities in the world open up. Look at the world is flat issue, yeah we know it is bogus - but everything they had available to them at the time told them it was flat and everything evolved around the world - we learned different eventually when we gained more knowledge. And one thing to remember about energy, energy exists in all things - be it motion, heat, whatever - but two areas that continue to baffle scientists to explain is magnetism and gravity. What great energy could hold so much to the earth when physics would show that if you spin something around, loose objects on it are going to move away from the object. We haven't defined gravity enough to know whether or not there is an untapped energy potential there. Oh and I know I'm going to be called ignorant, I don't care Smile

Note that although this site (http://tinyurl.co.uk/kbga) uses different logos etc and is based at a different address it does share one major similarity: Sean McCarthy - CEO on both sites, new (infinite energy) and old (assisting companies in e-commerce projects).

... I think they're -serious- about this. Weird.

I was looking at the press coverage page and noticed that they have emptied it. I tried the press releases area and followed a link to a compo they sponsored and Sean McCarthy was an adjudicator of: http://www.dit.ie/DIT/industry/studententerprise/guidelines.pdf

D(ublin) I(nstitute) of T(echnology) seems to be too legit to be involved in a made-up company...Confused

Also, maybe I'm reading too much into this but the pdf mentions that prizes would be presented on 9th March 2006 whereas Steorn don't congratulate the winner, Blackhawk (or Nighthawk as per the DIT site), until August.

As much as I'm on the ARG/NOT ARG fence right now, this too could be taken other ways - I mean, it would be an excellent way to introduce a chat/IRC component to a game.

However, all things aside, I'm inclined to believe that this is real, and that there is just an energy component that these people have overlooked when doing their efficiency calculations.

Still, it is intriguing either way.
