Not only will all the publicity bring out more scientists explaining that free energy is impossible, but with all this publicity it will be really hard for the scammers to not get caught and arrested.

Arrested for what tho? Placing a false ad in The Economist?

Breking the laws of physics?

Seriously, if it were a scam, and money were involved somewhere, then raking in cash under false pretences would surely be criminal. The only thing that makes me not cry scam is that they don't appear to be asking for any money though.

They're not asking the general public for money, but who knows what they've told investors... I read a thread in their forum where someone claims that last year Steorn went around Ireland looking for investors.

Photos conflict

I was going through the photos page (http://www.steorn.net/en/press.aspx?p=7)
and noticed that Michael Daly and Sean McCarthy seem to have a very striking resemblance.

nothing big... just thought "wow...those two blokes look like brothers!"

Almost guaranteed. Each of the images shown when you click on the tabs at the top (Home, News, Forums etc) has a 'swirl' look to it, which corresponds to the swirling clouds over the relic in the Halo 3 Announcement Video.

The kicker: check out the image in the last tab, 'Register.' It's the only one without the swirl pattern. It is, however, a honeycomb.

Can you say "I Love Bees"? Very Happy

Maybe, but if you look at all the images, then at least some of them tend to be related to the golden ratio. And to quote wikipedia

Quote:

It is often claimed that the number of bees in a beehive divided by the number of drones yields the golden ratio.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Ratio

Similarly the shell image I believe is an example of the golden spiral. edit: see http://images.google.com/images?q=golden%20ratio%20shell

Additionally if you look at the image of the 'testing rig', It may just be me making something out of nothing, but there appear to be a few things that have been positioned in a 'golden ratio fashion'. Eg the bottom vertical bar is possibly about the right distance into the horizontal bar to which it is attached. Haven't really compared by any means though.

the CEO Sean McCarthy just this moment, on radio, said all the rumours about xbox marketing etc. aren't true and that this is definitely a serious project.

Of course, TINAG would have Sean saying that....

That's exactly it. All the ARGs I'm aware of so far have been obvious games, in one way or another. Would the next level of ARG be to make something that is as real as possible? Steorn so far is about two or three real employees (that we've seen or heard talk). What if instead of having fictional characters that we don't really meet in real life, and who only show up in-game, the Steorn guys are in game all the time and never admit it? The game could be stretching the limits of what's in-game and what's out. Make people really look around for clues.

Or the Steorn guys could really think they found a way to make infinite energy.

I was just poking around the whois info and such for steorn, and while everything looks normal enough, I don't really know what to make of it all...

www.steorn.com (whois)
www.steorn.net (whois)
www.steorn.org (whois)

So we've narrowed it down to either they have taken painstaking care to make the company look real, or the company is real. Which isn't narrowing it down at all... Razz

I like the concept of setting up a 'grand claim', then putting up their own forum to generate legit seeming discussion. Adds a lot of at least mildly entertaining content quick.

I've so missed you guys

This thing screams ARG to me. The website says, "I am an alternate reality game. Play me, baby."

If you ask me, it seems that the people behind steorn.net have taken a good long look at what happens when you put up a website with mystifying content and not explain too much about it (eon8), and let people speculate about it for a while.

What happens is you create a hype (if done succesfully)... which I'm taking as perfect for some sort of viral campaign, not so much a big tie-in game like ilovebees. But who knows...

For or against?

I saw this in the forums on their site:

Quote:
Fig. 4-6 of Low Energy Magnet Actuator patent application by Steorn. April 6, 2006.
Also at that point -- if the results of the jury are positive -- the commercial development will begin, proceeding with financing, licensing, manufacturing, marketing. Until then, the company is refusing any offers for investment or licensing rights. They intend to pay all expenses involved in the jury review of the technology. This is to dissuade any claims that the company is fraudulently creating a spectacle to raise money.

To protect the intellectual property, the company has filed seven international (PCT) patents, two of which have already become public; another will become available within a few days.

If and when the time comes for commercialization, Steorn will select well-seasoned companies as licensees for manufacturing and marketing. They want businesses which already have the key infrastructure established, in order to expedite rapid production and dissemination of the technology. These can further refine the design as needed for various applications.

"We've come up with the transistor; other people can build the microchips", McCarthy said, drawing an analogy.

You tell me that this isn't written by the kind of drama-oriented person who would write for an ARG (as opposed to a reporter or tech writer) and I'll tell you to put a sock in it.

Also, the Steorn CEO getting on the radio to say this isn't XBox-related, and is very serious? That is not the sort of thing that real CEO's do - what do I mean? I mean they don't mine and respond to every single email and forum entry - they'd not dignify it with a response, or they wouldn't even understand what the hell we're talking about. It's not like Mr. Steorn CEO is cruising unfiction, you know?

On the other hand, if this were a wonderful set-up for the sort of trailhead you can't differentiate from reality by a group of dedicated people who spent years setting this up... well, that's exactly right, then.

Dissenting arguments and agreements welcome Smile

Also, as long as we're speculating, I think many of those subjects in the steorn forum were seeded.

What we need is someone on this who's in IRELAND. Someone to check the physical location.

ALSO WIK: How can you have a Corporate Finance officer with the last name Moriarty?

ALSO ALSO WIK: look at their press graphics. I ... well, I can't really explain it, it's a gut feeling, as a graphic designer, when I see their visual work it seems indelibly tied to a certain corporation we know. As a photographer, I look at those photos of the staff and think "This is theatre."

Okay, that's not the most persuasive argument in the world.
