Re: For or against?

Also, the Steorn CEO getting on the radio to say this isn't XBox-related, and is very serious? That is not the sort of thing that real CEO's do - what do I mean?

Okay, seriously peoples, which is it? I've seen people go "Why haven't they come out and said this is not ARG? That's not very professional." and now someone going "Why did they come out and say it wasn't an ARG? That's not very professional." I guess they were damned either way, huh?

Thanks to one of the people on the Steorn forum, I got a link to an mp3 of today's broadcast. This is what he ended up saying:

Quote:
Are you worried that you'll be treated as something of a charlatan or a cancer now in the scientific community? Would that damage the rest of the work that your company does?

We didn't, and I make it clear, this isn't something we did lightly. Because, there is no question since, you know, Thursday night - we launched this midnight Thursday night - that the things that have been said about me personally, and the other people in the company...

What sort of things?

We've been, at the light-hearted level, we've been called an Xbox marketing stunt, or a marketing stunt for the Halo 3 game. We're a CIA covert operation. We don't exist...

Are you?

We're not. No. Although it would be a great story, but we're not. You can't make a claim like this without being prepared for cynicism. We're prepared to accept it because we know what the results will be at the end of it.

While he brought up the Xbox connection himself, he was specifically asked about the things people have been saying about them, so I don't know how unprofessional that was. You go through the Stoern forums, and there are all sorts of crackpot theories about what this is, from Xbox to Lost to whatever. By now, I'm sure they've gone through the board and seen what people are saying, not to mention whatever email queries they have received by over-eager fanbois wanting to know if things are connected. If you start getting a significant amount of people asking you the same thing, you're going to take notice and why wouldn't you discredit the more popular theories when given the chance to?

Ok, a site that is supposedly watching Steorn's every move... except that there is NONE of the speculation about xbox/ARG/viral marketing mentioned on it, which would be something that people would immediately mention when publicly discussing what Steorn could be really about, no?

NOW it starts to look like an ARG... Shocked

I really, really think this is an ARG now. After looking through 291 article names for the April 1st edition of the Guardian, there is not a single article about Steorn, or any other energy project. It's not a real article, making it fake, making me think it's an ARG. I'm checking out the other press reports set before August.

ETA: I couldn't get to The Irish Times's archives, but there was no story about them on Feb. 23rd either. This is definitely not real, but I don't know that it's an ARG for sure yet either.

Yeah, interest definitely piqued now.

I'm considering registering myself as a validator of their technology - entering my address, phone number, etc....

Has anyone else done this yet?

Just to bring attention to it....

Yes, they did mention speculation about viral marketing. If you go to the "About" page - http://www.steornwatch.com/about/ :

Quote:

Steorn's claim of "creating energy" has been optimistically embraced by many, denounced by scientists, ignored by most traditional press and has led to numerous theories it is an elaborate hoax or fake viral marketing campaign.

Not yet. I thought it was real until about ten minutes ago, so I didn't think about it. I think I'll wait and see if they give us a bit more info before trying it.

On a similar note, has anyone tried calling them yet?

For urgent press queries or to arrange a briefing please contact: Citigate Dewe Rogerson,

Or for that matter, asked to arrange a briefing? Very Happy

I haven't tried calling, but the number really is to that PR company. But Steorn is not on the list of clients, making me, again, think it's fake.

Hmm good catch there, I was a little too quick with my conclusions... still, I'm not convinced at all that steornwatch.com is "just" a site made by some group of fanatic disbelievers... it's way too slick somehow.

I could be horribly wrong though, and as I have already been contradicting myself in this thread, pretty big chance I am on at least one of the two claims Wink

Smile Surprised Shocked

I'm actually really surprised no one posted this already. Apparently there aren't many slashdot readers on here.

http://slashdot.org/articles/06/08/21/173253.shtml

Also, don't miss the link to the AFP article on Yahoo.

Well, it's only a short bit on what we already know, isn't it? Wink I hope /. won't link here though, as that has never proven to be a good thing for server capacity in the past Very Happy

Imbri posted this link in chat, which is also rather interesting and mightily coincidental...

I was about to say that it's a little odd, though, for AFP to be writing about an ARG like that, it'd be kind of like CNN giving a legit report on an ARG, and then I clicked on your link Laughing

On a side note, I kind of hope uF does get /.ed, it'd be like the final day of the Volvo hunt all over again.

But, yeah, this is weird.

Especially that the CNN article lists it's publishing date as
Quote:
January 24, 2002 Posted: 12:34 AM EST (0534 GMT)

and even mentions slashdot as well....

Are they reclaiming the same thing?
