calls

I called the company number and got a recording with a woman's voice saying the offices were closed and to push 1 to leave a message and to check the website for more information.

I couldn't get the PR company number right - I just got the standard "this call cannot be completed."

Back track through the thread I believe I posted a link to a company that occupies the same block as steorn! Maybe you could call them and fish for info there.

Theres one guy named dicombobulator on the steorn forums whos dead set that this is scam. His post are.....funny to say the least.

I would just like to point out that Steorn filed a patent application in April, 2006. It seems pretty deep for an ARG to me. Smile

Doesn't this remind anyone of the Lost Experience?

All this talk of perpetual energy & magnetism makes me think of Lost (the TV Show). Has anybody looked into that connections?

Seems pretty deep for an ARG to have 50,000 lines of code on the backend of a server and have scouted out GPS locations for pay phones across the country. But that is what ILB did.

Doing a cursory search A patent application costs £30.00 that's not exactly breaking the bank to build the reality to the point where people say 'nah, must be real'.

Also from your link: MCCARTHY SHAUN DAVID Versus Sean McCarthy on the press page of the steorn website. How did they not even get the name right Question Confused

Well, here's another 'coincidence'.

I started doing some searching on the names of the employees at Steorn. This is what I turned up on 'Richard Walshe':

This is on a web page for the 'Northern Ireland Film and Television Commission'.....

The site has open directories. someone probably stumbled upon it.

If you look at the poll on the front page the results used to say 75% yes 25% no. It's now almost the exact opposite.

Does it seem odd to anyone else that you can see the directory listing? That just seems like something that is really hard to do on accident (for a competent site admin) but really easy to do on purpose.

For grins I also tried:
http://www.steorn.net/de/
http://www.steorn.net/es/
http://www.steorn.net/fr/
http://www.steorn.net/it/

I based those guesses on the different languages listed across the top. They all showed the same directory listing. So I thought maybe it was one of those deals where http://www.steorn.net/ANYTHING/ would work, but it doesn't. The following URLs return an IIS page not found error:
http://www.steorn.net/im/
http://www.steorn.net/www/

For what it's worth

I have been tracking this for the past few days and I dont believe this is an ARG. That being said, here are a few signs that it could be one.

1. Taking out an ad in the Economist. Most people will argue that this shows that it is not an ARG because it would cost $100,000. What most people fail to remember, however, is the the Economist is sponsored by MICROSOFT. If this is an Xbox ploy, or ILB2 then it would make very much sense for the ad to be taken out in the Economist. It's like putting an ad on the Microsoft main site because "that's what computer people read" (I know they dont, but you get the picture)

2. Team Xbox was one of the first sites to link to the steorn site. Although this does seem incriminating, it could also be coincidental. Team Xbox has reported on Mac OS X, Dell buying Alienware, and other non-xbox news in the past. This could just have been a slow news day for them and they found this very interesting. On the other hand- the Xbox-ARG thing is just uncanny.

3. The registration site. The registration site for scientists seems a little sketch from the start, but then the "credentials" section gives one little box. If steorn is to be serious about this, it will take a while for them to sort out the liers from the serious scientists- if in fact this "challenge" is true.

Just a few reasons I could think of, I'll post more as I see them.

Ok I didn't see (and Search didn't find) this yet.
I see that the images directory is open too:
http://www.steorn.net/images

Lots of stuff in there including a sizeable .zip which I assumecontains all of the images in the directory(downloading now to see). There are also a few images like this one that are HUGE (1984x3000 px)! Way bigger than you'd expect to be floating in a company's webserver's images dir.

I still don't know what all this means, but I do believe that we are supposed to be digging through the site, ARG or not.

Edit: And I must add that I find it odd that the .com url redirects to the .net url. I would think everything would redirect to .com. Call me .com-centric.
Oooh and there is a Managment Login Portal page at: http://www.steorn.org/ but please folks lets make sure that this is in fact an ARG before anyone starts trying to hack the login.
