[UPDATE] PXC Newsletter 24/08/2006

MC wrote:

This week:

* New features on PXC.com
* Ask Mind Candy Ep2: Frappr Competition!
* Free PXC cards with selected magazines
* Announcing: The Perplex City Boardgame!
* Perplex City shortlisted for a BAFTA
* Story update: Reconnected
* Leaderboard update
* Newsletter puzzle

It's been a strage week in Perplex City, with the link to Earth reconnected,
our friends over there are left scratching their heads over the massive power
outage (and more) that occured when the PXC/Earth connection went down. More
in our story update, but first, the headlines:

** NEW PXC.COM FEATURES: DISCUSSIONS & MORE! **

A raft of new features launched on PerplexCity.com this week. You can now leave
comments on every card, player and tag on the website, and other players can
leave comments on your profile too - although you have to approve them first!
Just navigate to any card, tag, or player page to try it out. Or check out the
index page:

http://www.perplexcity.com/community/discussions/all.qbuild

Also, there's a new cards page to help you navigate your way around:

http://www.perplexcity.com/cards/index.qbuild

** ASK MIND CANDY: FRAPPR COMPETITION **

A new episode of Ask Mind Candy is now available to view! Not only that, but
there's a new (very easy) competition. Have a wild (or educated) guess at where
in the world the Receda Cube is hidden, and if your guess turns out to be
closest, an exotic array of Mind Candy trinkets will be bestowed upon you -
even if it isn't £100,000!

Ask MC Episode 2:

Have a guess at the Cube's location:

Join the discussion, vote for a theme tune, and Ask Mind Candy a question:

** MAGAZINES + PERPLEX CITY CARDS = AWESOME **

For this month only, you can get a free pack of Wave 1 - 3 Perplex City
puzzle cards with three different magazines, so bargain-chasers should
go and check out the following:

BBC Mind Games:

Scrye Magazine:

** PERPLEX CITY BOARDGAME: COMING SOON! **

Inspired by a traditional game from Perplex City, we'll soon be
launching a new product - Perplex City: The Boardgame! Featuring over
1200 questions, it's an exciting thing of goodness that will be
available worldwide. Check it out now, funk soul brother:

** PERPLEX CITY: OFFICIALLY BAFTACULAR **

Perplex City has been shortlisted for the Video Game BAFTAs! Alas there's no
popular vote, we can't mobilise you all to get a'voting. Instead, we're
invoking the more traditional method of crossing our fingers - unfortunately,
this makes it very hard to type.

** STORY UPDATE **

Thanks to the sterling work of the Cube Hunters in San Francisco, the data link
with Perplex City has been restored. Alas, the new link carried news that the
Third Power have sent a group of agents over to Earth using a high-powered
portal - agents with helicopters and access to our phones.

But back in Perplex City, Kurt has discovered that the Third Power portal was
destroyed, probably just moments after it was activated. And in the Academy,
Garnet Reed has taken charge of the Cube Retrieval Team, keeping an
uncomfortably close eye on everyone. Nobody, it seems, can be trusted...

(The podcast returns in two weeks' time...)

** LEADERBOARD UPDATE **

Make some space, everyone, because The Ego is back: oliverkeers13 rules supreme
once again with a hearty cache of 15560 points. Does this mean we'll soon see
Tally return to challenge the cravat-wielding youngester? Or perhaps a newbie
will emerge to claim the crown, like player of the week GraysonJones (98
solves, 2901 points, in his first four days) or mathlete, with 212 solves and
10,907 points in 4 weeks. Only time will tell...

Updates every week in The Sentinel:

** BONUS NEWSLETTER PUZZLE **

Last week, we asked what Hell was, according to Salt Choir Users? It was a bit
of a tricksy anagram to turn that into "Sartre: Huis-clos" which famously
contains the line "L'enfer, c'est les autres," or "Hell is other people."

This week, a top-down picture of six dice stacked on top of one another:

_____
. .
. .
_____

The questions is, how many dots are *hidden* from your view? The answer'll be
in the next newsletter.

****

Until next time, Cube Hunters, happy hunting...

Mind Candy

It depends on what it means.

If I means "All the dice you can't see", then it counts the outside faces as well?

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
This would mean 21 per dice. 21 * 6 = 126, minus the 4 you can see = 122.

Or does it JUST count the faces that are blocked from view by another die?

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
In that case it would be 7 per dice, minus 4. Which is 38.
