[EMAIL] Keith August 9 - Mask Retrieval

Keith wrote:
Thanks for getting back to me about helping out; it's cool you are out there on the left coast, because the LA thing has gone critical and I really need someone's help out there right away. I'm sure you already know about this, but I sent one of the masks I found to a guy out in LA who has a personal history with Ongs Hat / Aglaura and all the weird shit that has gone down there in the past. I was hoping he could tell me what the Hell these masks might mean and why some people seem willing to kill for them. Unfortunately, the guy couldn't tell me anything about the masks and, in fact, they freaked him out somewhat. He's anxious to get rid of what I sent him, and I'm afraid if I don't get someone to meet him very soon, he may just toss the damn thing somewhere and walk away.

I found out where he's having lunch tomorrow and that he's going to have the mask with him. It's a place in LA called Restaurant 23, and it's at 923 E 3rd St. He's going to be there at noon. Any chance you could be there too? He'll be wearing an Indian Motorcycle jacket and if you've seen that Incunabula comic book, you've seen him. He's that same guy in there, for real. I know, freaky, isn't it?

Let me know as soon as possible if you can help me with this, 'cause I've got a few people who can possibly help but no one definite yet. Everyone's kind of iffy because it's during a weekday I think, but I really don't want to wait until this weekend. It's just too risky.

BTW, the guy's OK and he's got a ton of interesting stuff to say about what happened back there when the place was still called Ongs Hat, so you may be able to pump him for some background details about that if you want. But if you just show up and get the mask and don't say anything, that's fine with me too.

Please let me know, and I'll nail down the details for everyone involved as soon as I can.

Stay safe, and thanks again, man.

KM

Oh yeah, thanks for offering to help with the Council meeting idea, and for the warning about it too. Yeah, I know it's risky but I'm quickly running out of alternatives here.

I, uh, said yes.

Anyone have anything I ought to ask Mr. Matheny if Keith chooses me?

Got a letter from Keith as well. Here's what is different:

Quote:

***snip***

Please let me know if you know anyone who can help out, and I'll nail down the details for everyone involved as soon as I can.

Thanks for your help with the Council meeting thing too. I know it's risky but I'm quickly running out of options here.

As far as Meaghan's is concerned, I can't help feeling I may have made a big mistake there too, just like out in LA, but that's not something I feel comfortable explaining here like this. I don't have my phonebook right here with me now, so I'm not sure. Do I have your phone number?

Stay safe, and thanks again for everything.

Will send him my number - again. lol I had written him about my concern about Meaghan and that no one seems to be doing anything to help her. I told him maybe he's her champion. Smile

Yeah I got a similar email, with at the end;

Quote:

As far as "Meaghan's involvement", that's not something I feel comfortable explaining here like this. I don't have my phonebook right here with me now, so I'm not sure. Do I have your phone number?

I asked him how involved Meaghan was, and told him I'd contacted Sam and Dale about the meeting.

Does that sound like he gave or sent Meaghan something from his stash? Its possible that that is what is making Meaghan so despondant? She might be in posession of something that is depressing her? Maybe Dale or Bruce should look for an artifact of some kind.

Here is my original letter, and the unique parts in his reply.

There is someone else in town who is starting to unravel the threads
that may help figure out what is really going on...and he has
connections to the city council.

Bruce Abbott, the publicist for Marzent, is engaged to Diane Sprague
(city council woman, Dale's ex-wife). I have been reading his blog
( http://www.anonymousfame.com/iambruce/blog.html) and it seems he has
found some unusual items (and hasn't been able to find the head of the
company) that may be related to some of the weird things going on
around Aglaura lately. I had a hard time seeing it, but was there
some seriously heavy computer equipment in that video? I wonder if it
is related to the invoice Bruce found
( http://www.anonymousfame.com/iambruce/marzdoc.jpg)

I'm not sure why, but I think Marzent's plans, the fires around town,
and Dale's weird overlay of that darn 3-0-7 symbol on the town's map
is all connected. And Bruce may be the ticket, take a look at this
discarded bit of paper he found
(http://www.anonymousfame.com/iambruce/marzdoc2.jpg ). Anything look
familar to you?

Unfortunately, if you just show up or called him out of the blue, that
may not get you very far. But Dale & Bruce used to be business
partners and best friends. And it sounds from Bruce's latest entry he
is about ready to try to mend the fences. Maybe you can talk more to
Dale about what you saw out in the woods. And the two of you can
approach Bruce together. You may be the next great three muskateers.

I wish I could be of more help. As you know, I'm more on the West
Coast so won't be able to attend the council meeting on your behalf.
And I'm actually going to be out of the country as well (you have
anything you want me to take to Greenland?) so I can't make any phone
calls for a week.
But, as always, if you need a place to crash in Las Vegas, please
don't hesitate to call. You have my cell number. As for the issue in
LA, don't worry, I know a very nice lawyer (who tells some pretty
funny jokes, actually) and I know he is very trustworthy, even if he
is a lawyer (hey, my dad was a lawyer also, now he just plays poker
and does extra work in Hollywood). If you are contacted by a Shad0,
tell him I said "hi".

Please stay safe. A good nurse is a terrible thing to waste.

Heather,

Thanks for getting back to me about helping out. It's a shame you're only halfway out there in Vegas because the LA thing has gone critical and I really need someone's help out there right away........ He's that same guy in there, for real. I know, freaky, isn't it?

.......

As far as this Bruce guy you brought up, I'm pretty sure Dale mentioned him too somewhere along the line but honestly, it may have been at one of the points where he had lost me completely. I know why he's a writer, 'cause he's got a way of using a lot of words and not saying very much some times. I'm going to see about getting a hold of Bruce though, so thanks for the tip.

Stay safe, and thanks again.

Well, let's see...just some suggestions or food for thought..maybe he could explain:
How he and Dale came to know each other.
What the masks signify and why he's so freaked out about them.
What does he think is going on in Aglaura/Ong's Hat?
The Incunabula stuff is so complex, it's hard to think of questions on the topic. Incunabula: then and now? What ever happened to the Egg? Was it a time/space machine? Did it use radiation chemistry?
Could a dead person use it to communicate via email to a civic forensics specialist? Wink

First of all, thanks a lot man for being willing to do this. I really appreciate you going to retrieve the mask in LA and keeping it safe. It's a big favor I'll owe you and I won't forget.

I actually found at least one more person who is also both willing and able to make it there, but since you were the first one to respond with a definite "yes" (and also since a couple different people recommended you in emails to me) I've decided to let you get and hold onto this special item. I've asked the other person to possibly show up as a back-up, just in case something happens and you can't make it there. I told him that he would not be getting the mask though, so there won't be any confusion over that. I found a few extra things in each box I dug up with a mask in it, like that freaky Incunabula CD I handed over with the first mask, and I sent them along with the mask to this guy in LA. So the other person showing up will get those items to hold onto and research, and will also get to talk to the Ongs Hat expert. It couldn't hurt to have a second set of eyes, ears, and questions, could it?

So, just to recap, the man you are meeting will be at the Restaurant 23 at the address I gave you earlier at 12:00 noon, your time. He'll most likely be seated inside and will be wearing an Indian Motorcycle jacket. If you've read that Incunabula comic, you should recognize him. If you can, write me back and let me know what you'll be wearing so I can let him know and he can watch for you.

Please, play it cool. Don't make a big scene about anything, and try to be aware of the people around you. We don't want anyone overhearing what's said between you all during this.

If you have any problems tomorrow, email me immediately. I'll be watching my inbox like a freakin' hawk all day long, especially at the time of the hand off, so I should be able to get back to you fairly quickly.

Thanks a lot again and be careful. I think everything should go smoothly but caution wouldn't hurt, either.

Dammit. The last time I tried to use my camera -- which was only a couple of weeks ago -- the stupid thing wouldn't work. It behaved perfectly normally until I actually hit the button to take a picture, at which point it turned itself off for no readily apparent reason. Mad Maybe I'll try putting in some new batteries.

Lunch with mysterious stranger. (Yeah, it's who we thought it would be.) Mask retrieved, among other things.

Bruce Abbott leaves a message on my voice mail. WTF? How did he get my phone number? DALE!

Keith wrote:

I heard from Joe M. that you were there but I thought maybe I'd hear from you too that everything was OK?

Sorry if I sound exciteable (Warren wrote that song about me) but I'm on edge here, man. Help me out and let me know you are OK.

KM

I wrote:
Just staggered in after a particularly long day -- had to make up work for skipping out for a lengthy lunch for some reason.

Short version: I got it.

Slightly longer version: Mask Guy (for so he shall be named) was a fascinating gentleman with many things to say, most of which are probably of little interest to you. Whoever your backup person was did not show, so I got the mask, a Xerox of the original Incunabula catalog, and an autographed copy of Mask Guy's book. The mask itself is a little bit worse for wear -- one of the tusks is missing, and one of the side fringes has come off -- but the important thing is that it is out of Mask Guy's possession, which is what he wanted. He thought he was done with all of this years ago, and was a bit nervous when strangers started contacting him out of the blue asking about it. Apparently it was a rather traumatic experience, and he has the scars (literally) to prove it. So once he decided that I was trustworthy -- and not an agent of the Opposition, whatever it may be -- he was very happy to be rid of it.

I'm planning to drop a line to Sarah Wyatt, who originally created the masks, just to let her know it's safe. I hope that's all right with you -- I won't mention you or Mask Guy. If you have any questions, please ask; otherwise, I'll just hold onto it and be glad to have been able to do you the favor.

(I just noticed -- you sent your e-mail about five minutes before I logged in. Timing is everything, eh?)

More details and photos to follow, but I gotta pack 'cos I'm heading out of town tomorrow.

(No, not because I'm being chased by black helicopters. Geez.)

Shad0, do you think you will be able to post some pics soon? And maybe give us a summary of what you and the Incunabula guy talked about?

It would be much appreciated.
