[EMAIL/PUZZLE Trail] Mystes: What Has Been Promised (Sept 2)
Quote:
What Has Been Promised
"And so the Syzygies emanated from the Eternal One. The three who are six complete the One."
I have named them, these divine pairs - nous and epinoia, phone and onoma, logismos and enthumesis. Find the place where I have transcribed these names to find what has been promised you.

The Ancient Mysteries and Secret Societies
Quote:
Simon Magus, the magician of New Testament fame, is often supposed to have been the founder of Gnosticism.
In the Gnostic system, three pairs of opposites, called Syzygies, emanated from the Eternal One. These, with Himself, make the total of seven. The six (three pairs) Æons (living, divine principles) were described by Simon in the Philosophumena in the following manner: The first two were Mind (Nous) and Thought (Epinoia). Then came Voice (Phone) and its opposite, Name (Onoma), and lastly, Reason (Logismos) and Reflection (Enthumesis). From these primordial six, united with the Eternal Flame, came forth the Æons (Angels) who formed the lower worlds through the direction of the Demiurgus. (See the works of H. P. Blavatsky.) How this first Gnosticism of Simon Magus and Menander, his disciple, was amplified, and frequently distorted, by later adherents to the cult must now be considered.

Since the subject of the email was "what has been promised", I tried knowledge and so:

Looks like a cut & paste job to get the proper quote.

Re: philosophumena The dots occupy only the last nine squares. The Xs occupy only the first 25.
Hmm. 25 is very nearly 26....
A straight translation of the X's position to the corresponding letter of the alphabet gives:
HEGASNTGOLBIOANDIPEIUJOAOARSOEWESMUYWNSTRSTIFLNEHT
Backwards, it's:
THENLFITSRTSNWYUMSEWEOSRAOAOJUIEPIDNAOIBLOGTNSAGEH
Unless, of course, I have made transcription errors...

I don't think so. It looks as if the strips of text are in the proper order, and we've been given only half of them. "You have done well. Your reward, as promised..." The other half is probably hidden on the site somewhere else.

Not found on "desire" or "wisdom" or "reward".

Re: philosophumena For eight of the nine possible positions for the dot, there are six corresponding 6x6 grids. There are only two grids with the dot in the very last square. Trying the same direct correspondence of X-position to alphabet letter, and grouping the resulting letters by the position of the dots in the grids, gives:
ANJOUR TAOEYF HOUANS SDEMIL EGBISN IAWSTH GNLIES PORTET OW
Which makes just as little sense as the other stuff I've tried. I will say this, though: treating the Xs as letters does give a decent ratio of vowels to consonants. And although I haven't run a formal frequency analysis -- probably not terribly helpful anyway with a message of only 50 letters -- we don't get any Qs or Xs or Zs.
Edit: Got it. Unscramble the groups:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
A JOURN // EY OF A T // HOUSAN // D MILES // BEGINS // WITH A S // INGLE S // TEP OR T // WO
Which is a famous quote, with a little bit extra at the end. Hmm...

Attributed to Lao Tzu (father of Taoism) and considered a contemporary of Confucius (sometimes this quote is attributed to Confucius).
A biography here. Tried various locations and names to no avail.
Can we do something similar to the first grouping of letters found?

or backwards
THENLF ITSRTS NWYUMS EWEOSR AOAOJU IEPIDN AOIBLO GTNSAG HE
or maybe its a giant anagram?

Just my best guess as to the missing bits of text, mind you, but I wonder whether he means Dale. Or Keith. Neither makes me happy.

Yes. My guess is that the extra "or two" at the end is supposed to lead us to the next page somehow. (Perhaps the other half of the "knowledge" text?) I've tried a ton of stuff, but no luck.

Heh! Sorry if I was unclear... those are the same letters. I just grouped them in a different order, based on the dots. So yes, it's a giant anagram.

I've been doing the same thing and think your guesing is pretty close.... here is what I got for the first paragraph.....
Quote:
You have done well. Your reward, as promised is knowledge, something of value as much as anything. We have dedicated our lives to preservire and protect.
I'm not having as much success with paragraphs 2 & 3
