[UPDATE] Sentinel - 29 Aug 06 - Academy Denial

Quote:

Academy Issues Denial of Involvement with Portal, Blackout
By IONA RODIE

The Academy has issued a formal denial of any involvement in the alleged creation of a wormhole to Earth and the ensuing power blackout that occurred a few weeks ago. A statement on the Academy site flatly denies that the events were related to Academy projects or personnel.

The statement comes as public pressure grows on the City Council to curtail the autonomy of the Academy. "They have money, and they have access to some pretty frightening technology," said Council Member Nathan Earlywine. "I think it's pretty clear that the people of Perplex City deserve to know what the Academy is doing right here in the heart of our own city, when they could be putting our very lives and homes at risk."

He also added that, even though the Academy has issued a denial, he has "grave reservations" about the situation even requiring such a denial. "If the Academy were operating as it should, and the Academy truly were not involved with this incident, the question should never even have been asked," he said. "But here we are, asking anyway."

Master of the Academy Sente Kiteway said that the Academy is only operating as it has for many hundreds of years. "The people of the city have always entrusted the Academy to hold secrets for the security of the people," he said. "Our times are not exceptional in this respect." He added that he sincerely hoped voters would not be swayed by "unreasoning mistrust."

Academy insiders, though, say that Kiteway is using stronger language in private, calling Earlywine's remarks "shameless politicking." One source said on condition of anonymity that Kiteway is increasingly angry that the Academy's traditional place within the hierarchy of government is being transformed into a political gamepiece. "The sharp line between the council and the Academy is being blurred," said the source, "and none of us in the Academy think any good will come of it."

Arbitrary Rivalries Create New, Fresh Leaderboard Drama
By KATE BREWSTER

With the top of the leaderboard beginning to settle with the redemption of oliverkeers13, attention has moved to some of the lesser-known rivalries on the Perplex City leaderboard.

Take, for instance, the cutthroat bitterness between MikeJ and MikeyJ. One, a fresh-faced 25-year-old who joined the hunt in February this year, the other, a fresh-faced 27-year-old who registered in October of last year. Currently, with his age advantage, extra five months of playtime and additional "Y", MikeyJ leads 13,545 points to 7908. Many, however, don't believe we've seen the last of this contentious puzzle duel. PCAG analyst Samara Jones summarises: "The two are really chalk and cheese, and no mistake. Of course, from here in Perplex City, we can't really delve too deeply into the psychological depths of this head-to-head, but I wouldn't be surprised to find trash talk, gamesmanship, and even warring factions within the community divided along exactly these lines."

A similar but somehow less compelling rivalry is growing between Chris, 27 and of the UK, and the more geographically-monikered ChrisUK, 31 years old and surprisingly also of the UK. ChrisUK has 585 points and lurks in 5307th place, while the very slightly more energetic Chris, at 780 points, has captured 4619th place. Jones called this rivalry "comparatively bland if no less fierce," and remarked that as a general rule, fans are regrettably not interested in activity below 1500 points, no matter how much intense drama might be involved.

King of this week's new players is kandyman, who at 6685 points has gone just a Wordspy too far in making a particularly evil first impression, although thewolfboy leads on card solves at 170 to 163. Lxalon has finally got the edge on mathlete to become the best of the month's new players, with 234 cards solved and 13,384 points earned, a six-card and 577 point lead over mathlete.

Finally, this week, one of the faceless rank of rivalry-free players under 100th place, jazzychad, apparently foiled at 159th place in his climb toward the top, has struck out to seek wider acclaim through other means, namely by providing an array of inventive tools for players to visualise both their own scores, and those of others. His tools so far include a points graph, a stunning array of statistics describing the body of players on the leaderboard, and an absolutely baffling array of statistics on cards and the solving thereof.

The Dragon (August 11 - September 10)
Your key word for the week: espalier. Use this as your guiding principle in all things over these next few days, and nothing can possibly go wrong for you.

The Three Balls (September 11 - October 10)
What's even better than being invited to a party: being invited to several parties on the same day. Live it up, sunshine, and make a point of saying why you have to leave on those breezy transitions from one venue to the next.

The Dice (October 11 - November 10)
Finally, all of that busy-bee industriousness pays off for you and everything starts to fall into place. Enjoy that sense of accomplishment while it lasts. Remember, though, that no major milestone is worth much if you never walk that last fifty steps of your journey.

The Maze (November 11 - December 10)
Oh, duckling, if I had five lecks for every time you'll ever think your heart is breaking, I wouldn't have to write this column. Back off from the melodrama, pumpkin. Not every first date is going to be true and enduring love.

The Apple-Thief (December 11 - January 10)
Images of broken light which dance before me like a million eyes, that call me on and on across the universe; thoughts meander like a restless wind inside a letter box, they tumble blindly as they make their way across the universe.

The Hand (January 11 - February 10)
You should really bring a sweater or light jacket with you on Thursday night. It might not look like it's going to be too cold, but you'll find it unexpectedly breezy, and you'll welcome the extra layer.

The Baby (February 11 - March 10)
When I'm feeling at loose ends like you are right now, I like to find an activity that occupies my hands and my mind; you know, sorting through old papers, weeding the garden, rock-climbing, that kind of thing. Not that that helps you any.

The Eagle (March 11 - April 10)
This is a terrific week for you to seek out some new music. You have to admit your usual rotation is getting a little repetitive, and there's something out there that will make you into a lunatic fan all over again.

The Spider (April 11 - May 10)
This week it's important for you to pay attention to all of those tiny, doubtful voices in your head that you usually work hard to ignore. Can't say when or how just yet, but in the coming days, that paranoid delusional in the back of your head is really going to save your bacon.

The Wave (May 11 - June 10)
An unexpected find in a store will take you back to that one summer when you were fourteen years old, and that one cool thing that happened that one time. Ah, memories. Too bad it can't possibly ever happen like that again, huh?

The Archer (June 11 - July 10)
This is one of those weeks where you should remind yourself: at least you've got your health, right? You should seek out the company of a Spider, they have lots of experience with trying to remain optimistic at times like these.

The Half-filled Jug (July 11 - August 10)
Persistent curiosity in the face of relentless lack of provocation is one of your finest and most endearing features. Don't worry, everyone already knows you're a gossip and a busybody, so you don't need to go round apologising for it, duckling.

And remember, reputation lasts longer than breath.

Academy Statement

Quote:

Statement from the Academy regarding August 10

In recent days, the Academy has been accused of a variety of perceived offences, from undue secrecy to causing the blackout that struck Perplex City on August 10. We would like to step forward at this time and clearly state the facts regarding this affair for the public record.

First: We must confirm that the Centre for Reality Research's data link to Earth was severed intentionally by a group calling itself the Third Power. We have no solid information regarding this group and whether it considers itself the same entity as the semi-mythical secret society of that name, nor do we have anything but gross speculation regarding this group's motivations. We are assuming at this time that this group is looking to recover the Receda Cube privately for its own purposes, and we are committed to preventing this outcome.

Second: The PCEA has confirmed that the blackout was caused by a significant power draw that was not prevented by existing safety measures. This draw did not originate within the Academy grounds, nor was it caused by any Academy actions.

Third: It was widely reported by the press that a wormhole to Earth was created at the same moment that the blackout began. The Academy does not have any sort of functional Earth portal, nor do we know of any legitimate government nor industrial group that claims to have one. Any attempts to construct such a device pose serious ethical problems. The Academy was in no way responsible for this wormhole. Logic suggests to us that the activation of a portal device caused the significant power draw that, in turn, resulted in the blackout.

Fourth: The CRR has recorded evidence of quantum standing-wave resonance indicating that an unknown number of people were transported through to Earth through this wormhole. This same evidence indicates that the wormhole is no longer open. It is unknown at this time how many persons were transported nor their identities, but the Academy has been able to account for all of its faculty and staff in the days since. None of these transported individuals were employed by the Academy nor by the CRR; nor were they, to our knowledge, affiliated with the Academy nor with the CRR.

Fifth: Given the timing of the data link sabotage and the wormhole to Earth, and given other information the Academy is privy to, we have inferred that the party responsible for creating the wormhole is the same group, the so-called Third Power. The Academy is assuming at this time that the purpose of the individuals who were transported to Earth is nothing less than seeking out the location of the Receda Cube. We are intensifying our efforts to prevent this.

The Academy is entrusted with research and data regarding any number of extremely sensitive subjects -- not least the ongoing effort to retrieve the Receda Cube -- and is charged with protecting this information in order to protect the city's interests and security. We ask that the citizenry respect this delicate position and refrain from encouraging any interference in Academy matters that could prevent the Academy from fully executing its obligations toward the city.

Thank you for your consideration.

Professor Sente Kiteway
Master of the Perplex City Academy

I wonder if this isnt blatently telling us that we need to look deeper into the Libraryofbabel page:

Putting these two together makes me think we're looking for an mp3 file somewhere called Espalier? espalier.mp3 somewhere?

Espalier seems to be the art of training trees to form 2 dimensional patterns. Only thing I connect this to is the background of the eye could be branches but not much of a pattern there.

Likely this is more to Libraryofbabel as Guin suggested

Looks like we have missed something or perhaps we have to use a technique on a new puzzle?

I dunno about espalier.mp3, thought it does make perfect sense. I'd say that espalier is trying to get us to find something that is supporting something else. Prehaps it was supposed to help us find the LibraryofBabel page? Maybe it was written before we found it.

Just because it was so blatantly pointed out to us...

dictionary.com wrote:

espalier

–noun 1. a trellis or framework on which the trunk and branches of fruit trees or shrubs are trained to grow in one plane.
2. a plant so trained.

Which, um, turns out to be kind of meaningless, as far as I can see.

The musical fortune could be applicable to our search, maybe, but I dunno - wouldn't really bet on it. Hm.

Just because none of the definitions anyone's listed so far has been exactly like the one I found, I thought I'd throw this in.

es·pal·ier

1. A tree or shrub that is trained to grow in a flat plane against a wall, often in a symmetrical pattern.

Just adding it because it is a bit more descriptive and is easier to take metaphorically. Though what we'd take it metaphorically for hasn't suggested itself to me yet.

A reference to the recently created Anna Heath Chair perhaps? (But then it could be Gyvann for all I know too Wink )

Okay, stupid thought time: could the background of the eye on the libraryofbabel site be some sort of symmetrical pattern we're supposed to figure out?

Ah! I'm positive these are lyrics, but the track eludes me! My first thought was Ash, then Everclear but after looking I'm not sure. Please, someone put me out of my misery! Hmm, second thoughts, its not American Pie is it?

It looks like grass to me - like someone has just fallen over and as they open their eyes they see grass.

I thought the same about the finally comment too and the chair for Anna. Seems apt.

I thought the espalier thing might be a hint to try the "libraryofbabel" directory on another server (you know.. symmetric.. or something Confused) but after having gone through all the sites listed on the wiki, nothing's come up.

Still, I reckon it's a pointer to "if you do something once, do it elsewhere too...". Maybe the symmetry is between PXC and Earth?

This is, if people have never heard of it, from Across the Universe by the Beatles, of course. (Assuming they didn't nick it from somewhere else Wink )

Plus there's definitely a musical theme:

Maybe "rotation" is a key word... Maybe this should be considered in a musical light:
