Unless it's a paletted image - then you can have two colours with the same RGB value, and a colour-based fill even with 0 tolerance won't pick up the difference. You'd either need to fill by palette index, or change the palette colour itself. Those are the fun ones Smile

Wow, yeah.. good call. Hadn't run across one of those, but I can see what you mean. I'll have to remember that one.

A contrast fill is fairly simple. Take the image into paintshop/photoshop/gimp and do a bucket fill on the background. This will make 'invisible ink' appear. You can also see it by playing with the contrast/brightness controls of the image (not your monitor.) Invisible Ink is just a color that is only a shade or two different from the background. Usually can't be seen with the naked eye, but the bucket fill will miss it since it's technically a different color.

It's very possible the images have been changed since the solve.

That's what I thought it meant. Assuming that your bucket is set to a tolerance of 0/1 any colors which appeared visually to be the same, but were actually off by an RGB value or more, would suddenly appear.

I'm guessing the logo changed then, because when I do the fill, it does the entire section and leaves nothing to be seen.

I tend to forget sometimes the PMs change the images/pages as the game continues to play out. I guess that's why some people do site dumps on a daily basis and do comparisions of file sizes etc, and keep archives of those things.

Well in the case of the gif images they were paletted. So you'd have to go through and pick the colors fromthe pallette and fill that way.. hrm, any chance you have a working example or tutorial on that somewhere I can try, so I'm all set for the future?

Looks like several images so far have used this fill/contrast method to find hidden ink, so i want to be ready to rock and roll.

Count me in. Perplex City's hit a slow spot, so I'm all over it.

O.k were in, theres now a news tab:

New Assignment 09/01/2006
Level 1 Operatives. At this point, you should have received your extraction mission. You have been given a twentieth of a message we have received from the UN. You must extract your message and submit it for us to collate. All operatives have received something. Good luck, and God speed.

Welcome 08/31/2006
Welcome to landa-systems. Lets look at some of the challenges you'll face as an operative; You may be required to perform simple tasks, such as retrieving some information. Some of these task will be supplemented with insurmountable obstacles, such as complex codes that will need to be deciphered.

By getting here you have demonstrated an amazing grasp of logic and cultural prowess. You will be called upon to help us achieve our goals by relaying, collecting, encoding and decoding information for us. Many will be codes, some will be other information, all will be different, and most will not be sensical for any one operative, (to protect information security, of course).

As an example of codes you may receive, we will explain the last test you passed before you got here. You were presented with a login script which dynamically generated XML at search.php. Four fields, ucl, ulc, pcl and plc were given for incorrect answers. These codes meant:

Username Character Length
Username Letters Correct
Password Character Length
Password Letters Correct

It returned 1 if you had the right length for ucl and pcl, and then then number of letters you had in the correct location in ulc and plc. This would otherwise be a trivial problem of process of elimination, except for that the password was chosen from one of 20 possible passwords, and changed every 3 minutes. Any of the following passwords could have been right at a given time:

"hogtied", "bamboozled", "boundaried", "encircled", "enclosed", "trapped", "flanked", "rimmed", "hedged", "slave", "subordinate", "menial", "flunky", "nether", "peon", "subsidiary", "lesser", "bottom rung", "subjacent", "second banana" and "secondary".

These are the kinds of tasks you must perform. Be ready.
