#pmchat schedule (updated 2/25)

#pmchat
Winter into Spring 2006

Welcome to the Winter into Spring 2006 #pmchat series!

Held online, these chats will bring together experienced PMs (with a variety of experiences), those thinking about going behind the curtain, and the players that, as we all know, know more than the PMs themselves. The two month long series will focus on a different topic each week and, by the end of the run, should provide PuppetMasters and players with a greater appreciation of what goes on behind the curtain and a basic knowledge of what it takes to build a successful alternate reality game.

The first month will focus on development needs such as pulling together a great team and keeping them motivated while writing the game, the story, the characters, and the puzzles. The second month will focus on live issues such as getting your game out there, dealing with problems, and how to bring it to a solid conclusion all while keeping your team and your players happy.

The chats will be held in the #pmchat chat room every Sunday at 4pm EST. Details on where that is, how to get there, and what time that is for you are included at the end of this post. Chats will run for two hours, give or take, depending on the number of people present and how much people have to contribute to the discussion. Some topics are likely to be a bit more active than others. Unlike previously scheduled #pmchat chats, there is going to be a concerted effort on the part of the moderators to keep things moving and on topic. That, however, does not mean that we won't welcome off-topic questions, but they will be reserved for the end of the chat! So, if you have pressing issues, feel free to bring them up once the chat has been opened to general discussion. All chats will be logged and, once the logs are cleaned up, will be posted along with a detailed summary for future reference material.

Chat Schedule
This is a tentative schedule, though any changes will be announced at least 24 hours in advance.

Sunday Feb 26: The PM Team
Behind every successful game is a strong PM Team. This chat will focus on building a team, keeping the team together & motivated, and resources available to help facilitate team communications.

Sunday March 5: Knowing Your Audience
So, are you writing for the unfiction crowd? Perhaps, you're looking to get players elsewhere online? Maybe you're creating a private game for a local audience? While all three audiences want to have fun and become immersed in a story, they all have different needs. Here will examine different audiences, how to attract them, and things to consider when creating a game for them.

Sunday March 12: Game & Story Design
When it comes to building rich and complex story worlds that players navigate by blending the game and the story, it's easy to get them confused. This chat will help to explain the difference between the two and the considerations that they need to be given.

Sunday March 19: Puzzling Puzzles
Puzzles, love em or hate em, have become ubiquitous in the ARG scene. Are they important? How can you best puzzle a community while still allowing individuals to follow along? What are the different types of puzzles and are there guides to writing them? This chat will explore all of those issues and may just have a puzzle of its own.

Sunday March 26: Compelling Characters
(description)

Sunday April 2: Going Live
This is one of the most exciting and stressful moments as a PM. It marks the turning point from a development game to a live game and, suddenly, you are working not only with your PM team but also with every player that fell down your rabbit hole. Yet, it doesn't come easy, there's lots to do before this point and there's an art to creating an exciting launch that attracts players. This week will explore a variety of rabbit holes as well as examine what needs to be done before any player stumbles down that rabbit hole.

Sunday April 9: Keeping it all balanced
At the end of every game, PMs can be heard muttering in a corner about just how consuming the live game was. There's a reason for this… it is! But, with just a little work, you can get your game and your players to help you find a bit of time for yourself outside of the game world. This comes from creating a solid balance in your game and attracting and developing a well balanced player base.

Sunday April 16: Open Chat
This is Easter Sunday and so we're going to take a bit of a break from the normal schedule. I'll be around and others may be as well, so feel free to peek your head in! We can revisit topics hit on earlier or deal with any pending questions or issues you and your team may face and, if we still need fill, I'll share a bit more about my experience on WIBS and compare it to working on a grassroots team and some of the advantages and disadvantages of both types of games.

Sunday April 23: Recognizing & Fixing problems
No matter how much planning you do during development, once things are live, there will be problems. Accept that and you are a step ahead in the game. Prepare for it and you are ten steps ahead. The focus here will be on recognizing and dealing with problems before things start to unravel and, in the worst case, how to provide for a graceful and satisfactory premature ending.

Sunday April 30: End Game!
Ah, the game has run its course and it's time to wrap it all up and send your players back to their reality. The end game needs to be considered during the development stages and reconsidered a number of times while the game is live in order to help the provide the players with that bittersweet satisfaction of a great run. Once the game is over and the curtain is up, there's still work to be done!

My vote is for the PM team. It seems to be the root core for everything else. If one aspect of the team isnt what it needs to be, it can send the rest crashing down around it (at least that is my general thought in recent discussions) Cool

I have no preference for time, as they all work for me fairly well.

Thanks for the quick set-up imbri Wink

4 PM on Sunday works for me, as does Saturday.

My vote goes to

'The PM team: how to recruit, how to hold it together, what skills do you need, etc.'

or 'Keeping it all balanced: your life, the game, characters, the players'

But in the end they're all great topics and all worthwhile.

Someone suggested that we take the topics that I put up there and make it a weekly or bi-weekly series. I love the idea. Would this be something that people are interested in? Also, are their experienced PMs willing to check in that often? I think weekly would be better than bi-weekly, only because it's easy to forget if it's the on or off week.

So, if there's interest and we do this, the schedule would look something like this:

Sunday Feb 26
The PM team
how to recruit, how to hold it together, what skills do you need, etc.

Sunday Mar 5
Game & Story design
what's the difference and what do you need to consider for both

Sunday Mar 12
knowing your audience
writing for the unfiction crowd, looking elsewhere online, going local/private - the things to consider with these different audiences and how to meet their needs

Sunday Mar 19
Going live
what do you need to have done, what should you be prepared for, what happens when things go wrong

Sunday Mar 26
Keeping it all balanced
your life, the game, characters, the players

Sunday April 2
t's all falling apart! what do i do?!
how to recognize problems and deal with them and, if necessary, how to provide a satisfactory premature conclusion

Sunday April 9
End Game!
how to prepare for it, what you need to consider both in development and while you're live, how to tie up loose ends, how to give your players the bittersweet satisfaction of a great run

All times would be: 9pm London | 4pm New York| 1pm Los Angeles | 8am (next day) Sydney

This is a great idea. Let's have a weekly chat about all the topics you listed on your schedule, imbri.

(9pm London time is 10pm German time which works fine with me, by the way.)

Ok, based on this initial feedback, as well as other feedback recieved in chat, this weekly chat bit is a go. I'm going to edit the first post to reflect this.

(so, any little bits of conversation before this post might seem odd... sorry for any confusion!)

Could you do something about puzzles, too? The dos and don'ts, tips and tricks, etc?

Added! I had originally thought that would fall under the week of "Game & Story Design" but, you're right, the puzzle discussion could manage a week on it's own. I also added a week for about characters (not quite sure that needs an entire week, but perhaps it could be used to also discuss character interaction decisions). That brings us to a full two month schedule! woo!

All of the schedule changes are posted above. Nothing is final though, so if you have any great ideas, feel free to throw them out there!

Hope to see you all tomorrow (and then every Sunday after that Wink)

Thanks for the great chat today everyone. Hopefully we all learned something about PM Teams, their importance, how to recruit, how to stay motivated, and even a few resources to help with that communication. But don't let the discussion stop just because the chat is over! I've started a new thread to discuss the PM Team topic further - feel free to head over to it (here)and ask questions your forgot to ask, give advice you forgot to give, and share those opinions that we all know you have!

If you'd like to read the log, it's attached to this message.

Now, for next week....
I think it's a great topic, one of my favorites, actually. I can't wait to see where all we go with it. To help with the conversation and to keep things moving, it'd be great if you could do a bit of thinking over the week. You won't have to share what you come up with, but if you'd like to, that'd be great!

First: try to come up with 2 or 3 different audiences for an ARG. It could be your dream ARG, it could be an ARG that has already run, it could be an ARG that you would never like to see happen. Whatever, it doesn't matter.

Second: What are the key differences between those audiences. This could be skills or knowledge or, even, access to technology.

Third: Keeping in mind the answer to the second part, think about how you would attract each audience. What types of stories would they like? How would you present the game to them and how would you inspire them to play?

Thanks again for the chat today! Hope to see you next week!

So, is anyone going to say how the first one was? I missed it! (auuugh, i was watching Stargate Atlantis! (ok, it was worth it...i love Stargate Atlantis:)))

EDIT: Whoops, in the amount of time it took to write this, imbri posted stuff about the chat...yes, multitasking slows down your posting speed. Very Happy

Wow, I want to thank everyone for the great chat today. The post chat discussion on agency was fantastic - thanks guyp for bringing it up!

Here's the full unedited chatlog from tonight. To read it broken up roughly by topic, check out the thread devoted to this week's chat. Feel free to continue the discussion in there, we really just hit on a couple of the basics about 'audience' and I'm sure that there's so much more that we could talk about.

Thanks again everyone and I look forward to next week!
