The problem with dividing it up is you always get the rows in the same set
which don't join (i.e. 8 to 9, or 9 to 10, or 10 to 11) which makes me think each line should be treated seperately.

I really like the idea of 1 line per direction on a 12-point compass rose (or clock). The rotation would sort of echo the movement of the lighthouse beam.

I've tried plotting the result of this in two ways (5pixels per pixel on the source image, starting at green, ending at red).

Average of "active" angles:

Sum of "active" angles mod 360:

Average looks the most promising but there's nothing to reference it to... Crying or Very sad

Any chance this could refer to the Seven Bridges area?

Looking at the picture and the difference in the colour of the lines (some seem to me to be in shadow) and then looking at this map (http://www.perplexcitymap.com/) which also seems to show some sides of the buildings in shade; would this be able to give us a directional clue from the starting point (ie using the paper map as a cryptonomicon curb map)?

I think that we are supposed to take the lines and make a circular map out of it, overlapping like a panoramic view.

I'm thinking along these lines too, but I'm too stingy to go out and buy a protractor Smile Has anyone played with turning the lines into circles (a dozen of them, I guess) and has some kind of output? Otherwise I can try and play with them in the Gimp a bit later.

My gut feeling is that they represent light from the lighthouse sweep, but not sure how that ties in with a map thing just yet.

Did something similar in php:

http://www.billion2one.org/other/lighthousepaper2.php

(My lesson learnt for today is that PHP's arc drawing is dreadful!)

edit: you can rotate the circles (not very user-friendly)... e.g.
http://www.billion2one.org/other/lighthousepaper2.php?rot=150,-20,-10,0,0,0,0,-120,170,-40,-30,-120

Well, that picture from ixalon instantly made me think of a fresnel lens, coincidentally a type of lens used in lighthouses.

Just another idea for the pot. If you think of the puzzle as a clock. number the lines from 1 to 12 and then put them radiating out from the centre (which I believe will be X marks the spot). you can then think of the lines in pairs. ie

6 with 12
7 with 1
8 with 2
9 with 3
10 with 4
11 with 5

In this way the lines line up and I think the previous idea of trying to overlay this on a map or plan of something will give us a location. I like the idea of it being of the sewer that Granier had a hand in, but can't find a map of it.

Light house where art thou?

3 thoughts.
1. Do we know anything about any islands or big rocks off the coast that could have or might have had a lighthouse?
2. Do we have more information about the coast than is on the map cards? There is very little information there, and Scarlett clearly says that it has to be somewhere coastal.
3. As mentioned above, do we have information about tunnels/mines, etc. that are near the coast and away from the city?

Scarlett is our explorer, the one who goes and does stuff outside the city, so I'm figuring this is going to continue (which is why she got let off of school... someone wants her to keep searching well away from the dangers of the city.... likely Sente). I missed out on some of her earlier adventures... what maps do we have that go beyond the city limits (particularly coastal)?

Newguard?

From an old Sentinel article:
Quote:
Amateur entomologist Ricardo Curlaway, 19, was honoured by the Academy Wednesday evening for his discovery of a new species of beetle inhabiting central Perplex City. This is the first confirmed discovery of a new species since Lola Bancroft documented the existence of spotted tide-pool clams in the Newguard area in 151. It is not known whether this species is recently evolved or if it has existed undiscovered for many years.

What do we know about the Newguard area? It has clams, so it has to be coastal (unless they are freshwater clams).

Hello there, long time lurker, first time poster. I was just wondering whether the on/off nature of the waveform could be something to do with the lighthouse itself. Maybe the light is hitting objects around it, which is signified by a peak.

The lines to me appear to be slightly thinner at some places, leading to the rendering problem when the image is scaled down. Could this be slightly less of a reflection of the light from the lighthouse? Maybe something transparent?

Using the information in Violet's post today:
Quote:
Still, I stopped by Kurt's office and set him on this puzzle. After he'd asked the standard 'why don't you go to the lighthouse then?' question and I exasperatedly told him that the traces and the letter were all we had, he got the message. Within a few minutes, he was busy drawing circles on bits of paper and moving them around with his classic 'furrowed-brow' look.

It seems like this is the direction the PMs want us to take to solve.
