Our ever-enthusiastic players have been creating a veritable bevy of new sites for your enjoyment. The biggest of which is the Perplexorum, a whole new place to discuss the latest mysterious developments in Perplex City (and simply shoot the breeze) with grizzled veterans and rambustious rookies alike. And thanks to Jazzychad, there's a mind-boggling array of puzzling statistics for you to wrap your brain around:

Don't forget, you can keep up with all the latest community news on thePerplex City website, featuring art, videos and news on future meet-ups: http://www.perplexcity.com/community/index.qbuild

** STORY UPDATE **

Political pressure is growing on the City Council to rein in the Academy, and the Sentinel is hard at work with its best rabble-rousing to make things even hotter. Sente has issued a formal denial of any Academy involvement in the blackout or the portal to Earth - a denial that few in the city believe.

Kurt has been up to his usual tricks digging for information on the sly. So far, he's discovered that the parts stolen from the Crypto Department were designated as a super-secret Special Project 487, and with a little help from Karen Moro, he's found an enigmatic codename for this elusive project: axiom. But whose project is this, and what precisely is it for?

Meanwhile, Scarlett has been spending a very dull few weeks with her Uncle Sanjean, sent there to keep her safely away from the political thunderstorm brewing around Sente. She has seized this opportunity to explore the historic home, built by Anthony Granier and heavily decorated with the Third Power symbol. Mostly, she's turned up nothing - except for an intriguing mosaic picture frame that looks suspiciously like a puzzle. Maybe you can figure out what it means?

** LEADERBOARD UPDATE **

As uncannily predicted last week, puzzle-supremo Tally has staged a real comeback to usurp oliverkeers13 and regain her place at Number One, with no less than 15,600 points to her name. Overall, we've finally broken the 20m point mark, claiming another milestone on the long path to global domination!

rlp6028 is the current US leader, while EvilGenius stands proudly atop his fellow Canadians. Gallifreyan is this week's most moxilicious new contender with 2930 points (although emwnt has solved more cards with 104 vs. 86) and thewolfboy is the month's top competitior, rocking 13,559 points, 236 solves *and* a black leitmark in his first 16 days of play. We salute you all!

All the action, as it happens:

Reported on weekly in The Sentinel: http://www.perplexcitysentinel.com/redirects/leaderboard.html

** BONUS NEWSLETTER PUZZLE **

Last week, we showed you a rather rudimentary top-down picture of six dice stacked on top of each other, with the only visible face showing 4 dots. We asked you how many dots were hidden from view.

As many of you noticed, there's two possible answers to this question. If you remain stuck in your top-down position (imagining the circumstances is left as an exercise to the reader) then 122 dots are blocked from view (21 dots per die, multiplied by 6 dice = 126, less the 4 dots you *can* see, giving 122.)

However, if you can wander around admiring the artfully stacked dice from multiple angles, the answer is 38. Opposite faces on a die always add up to 7, so 7 dots are hidden on each die - that's 42 in total, apart from the top four dots, which you can see. Geddit?

This week's puzzle:

There are only 4 countries in the world that have only one vowel in their name. What are they?

(NB: "Y" doesn't count as a vowel.)

As ever, the answer will be revealed in the next newsletter!

****

Until next time, happy puzzling...

Mind Candy

Just to keep the update separate from my post, is it just me or does the US have better distribution in large stores than the UK now? Other than borders no major chains stock the cards, and Borders aren't exactly the largest company, there are none near me Sad But the US now have it in one of their biggest games stores.

I don't agree. While they're available online from major stores like Walmart and Gamestop, they're not actually available IN most of the stores. I just checked the gamestops in my area through the website and the two that are within a few towns of me both have at least 4 sets, but no plans to reorder more. That's only gonna be helpful if I'm the only person in my area that plays PCX. The closet store that sells them is about three and a half hours away from me.

Poor Poozle

Come on poozle, up until last week's retail expansion, my nearest store was in Berkeley (~450 miles north of me). That's meant over a year's worth of Firebox shipping charges. Crying or Very sad

Now I've got a store within driving distance (only 23 miles away). Cool

Let's keep the belly-aching to a minimum. Wink

Well, do they mean that only one of the five vowels can be used, or just that all the letters except one are various consonants?

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Because Japan and Canada are answers if the former is true.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Hmm... on closer inspection, it appears not. Since Y is counted as a consonant for this, I see Chad, Cyprus, Egypt, and everyone favorite, Kyrgyzstan.

As for availability... I'm going to run by two different GameStops in the Boston area after work, but I'm not optimistic. I've been buying heavily from a fantasy/role-playing bookstore (Pandemonium Books & Games, for other locals looking to buy). I know they're planning on ordering more once the current stock runs out, partly because I've been reliably spending lots of money on them.

I suppose that I could check Borders as well, seeing as there's one that I'll pass on my way to the first GameStop.

Well I seem to be mistaken, I always thought gamespot was a LOT bigger than it seems to be in the US, I imagine a lot of stores in the UK would have re-ordering problems as well because, despite being popular, it probably still isn't popular enough for a reordering in most stores, I can only hope that somewhere local starts stocking them soon.

Well, they have over 4500 locations in the US, but how well stocked they are is another question entirely - the announcement from Mind Candy said over 700 carry them, which is less than 20% that could.

Of course, I might just be too pessimistic about my chances. Larger cities seem more likely to get the cards, in which case I've got a good shot.

Finally, a store that stocks cards in good ol' Utah. Two days ago I bought some packs from the Game Spot a mere 5 minutes travel from my house! (Mixed wave 4 even.)

Might as well face it I'm addicted to perplex

Not only is the Gamestop near by, but I've almost run the first store near me in Houston out. The gamestop in Beaumont did NOT get a full box. They got maybe 20 packs.

The best part for me, I've traded in all my PS2 games to get credit for perplex city!!!

Now... I have 3 copies of Polar..... *pout*

Let us US players not all jump for joy just yet. I have 3 Game stops in my area and only 1 has them in stock (or even heard of them). It's a great thing to announce on the PXC site but I think logistics hasn't caught up yet

I'm in the same boat... there are 2 Gamestops near me... one has 4 packs (it's not even a Gamestop, it's an EBGames, guess they have mutual owners), and the 'Plan to get more?' section says No... maybe it's a pilot program of sorts?

I'm guessing that they they count occurences, not letters themselves, otherwise in addition to the ones posted above, you'd also have:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Åland – Åland Islands (Autonomous province of Finland)
Bahamas, The – Commonwealth of The Bahamas
Chad
Cocos (Keeling) Islands – Territory of Cocos (Keeling) Islands (Australian overseas territory)
Comoros – Union of the Comoros

That's five right there, and I only made it to the letter 'C'. Finding countries with one instance of a vowel other than 'Y' is a bit trickier:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Chad
Cyprus
Egypt (but since it technically has *no* vowels, does it count?)
Iran
Iraq
Italy
Kyrgyzstan
Libya
