This is probably just stating the facts, but I thought I would pull it all together.

I think they have to be trying to create sustainable power, I think a kind of battery that doesn't run out - its called a General Purpose Self-Contained Material System (Cubic). The project is called Material Research and "CONTROL" which I think implies that they knew they had something they just didn't know how to make it stable by staying together long enough.

1732, was a breakthrough with programming, coherence to 10 seconds, and then in 1735 they became self sufficient in power, with generators that have no input but may have taken fuel cells. (They must have been able to control it). The next thing is 1736, when they start moving material in bulk - they have the process cracked, and can move to mass production (I think we might find a factory in the lower levels). It seems to be a bit like atomic energy (they had to make that fall apart though rather than stay together), with pro's and con's. It is obviously dangerous if they are working in pressurised rooms, and according to Granier's diary it killed peope.

However, like atomic energy if they were able to control it would have been amazing as a power source, but sadly also like atomic energy it can be used as a weapon. They must have made the decision at the end of the war that the risks weren't worth it, and buried the technology.

Two further thoughts, firstly, the site survey and inspection dated April 1733, just over a year after the lab was opened. Someone thought that this was important enough that it is framed and on the wall. I wonder if it might be to do with Heath and Safety - I think that in the UK the Health and Safety information has to be displayed on the wall.

Secondly, Sente knows about Viendenbourg, and the Academy was involved in the lab, it is possible that the secret was passed from Master to Master down the ages. It seems unlikely that many more people knew, or the secret would have got out. This would mean that Sente also knows how to make the cube a weapon rather than just an honoured artifact.

Edit: I have been going through the Scarlett/Claire stuff, Claire started at Viendenbourg in "mid-267" (Scarlett blog Nov 4, 2005), after the cube was stolen, and therefore after she had worked with V. It is implied that Viendenbourg existed prior to her arrival (Scarlett blog, March 10, 06), but it doesn't actually say that anywhere. So, there is no way of knowing from that when they started mining at Viendenbourg again.

Also I had forgotten that Scarlett and Allain used a geiger counter at Anjsbourg (Scarlett blog, Feb 24, 06), so maybe the power is atomic, but has been used in a similar way to earth as a weapon, but they found a different way to harness it safely as a power source.
