 [Trailhead?] John Dishwasher

I'm a student at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, and two days ago I realized a number of strange flyers posted on corkboards around school:

Cell phone picture of the flyer

Along the bottom of the flyers were tear-off slips of paper with the words "Follow the white box at johndishwasher.org". My ARG!sense went "WoOP WoOP" so I took one and went to investigate.

johndishwasher.org is a simple website. Apparently it was made by the Friends of John Dishwasher, the name being a pseudonym for a reclusive and (apparently) incredibly talented novelist who is very secretive about his personal life.

I haven't read much of the novel, but the About Page of the website seems VERY ARG-ish to me... what do you guys think?

Other strange / interesting / notable things:
- The Contact Us page asks for $3 which will go toward's John's living expenses, apparently.
- From the Correspondence page - "We do not forward personal mail to John Dishwasher. He will not accept it. The reason for this will become clear in his later works."

Things I've done to try to fuel discussion / investigation:
- Started a wikipedia entry for John Dishwasher (nevermind, see two posts down)
- While pining for unforums to return, I foolishly posted the link to metafilter where it was quickly shot down for being stupid and stuff. Go figure. Razz

So tell me - does this have the faint scent of ARG to you guys, or am I just going crazy? Smile (I'm open to either answer, really)

Okay, QBKooky, you know I like you a lot, right?

But I'm not sure starting a wikipedia entry for every vaguely-ARG-like thing that comes along is necessary, let alone appropriate. I also think it's likely to annoy the regular wikipedia entries, who probably already have a slightly jaundiced view of ARGs, seeing as how everyone and their brother seems to think they should either launch or promote their game by spamming the ARG wikipedia entry with links.

This is why people host private wikis. In this case, I don't think this is notable enough to warrant its own wikipedia entry. Googling "John Dishwasher" nets you plenty of results, but on the first page, there's only one link to the John Dishwasher site, and no apparent mentions of it anywhere else.

This appears to be a vanity site, but even if it is an ARG, I really don't think it's ready for Wikipedia.

Wikipedia's not there to be used as an ARG workspace, in the way we use privately-hosted wikis dedicated to a particular game.

*Wikipedia entry in process of being deleted*

I pretty much knew when I posted it it wasn't appropriate for wikipedia (seeing as it's notability was mostly speculative), it was just so frustrating to find something that (to me) seemed so ARG-y (and this might have just been what I wanted to see in it) but all the usual places I looked (unforums, google) had no answers. I was just trying to put the name out there to see if there were any other people intruiged as well who had no place to discuss it (since unforums were down).

In any case, I guess I'm just gonna let the whole thing go. I don't have the persistence to be a trailhead-er; I think I'll stick to playing games other people have already found.

(And I like you a lot, too, Phaedra! Smile)

Well, that doesn't mean you should get rid of what you wrote, and it doesn't mean that others may not be interested in it, it just means it shouldn't be on wikipedia.

Anyway, if there's anything you put in the wikipedia article (links etc.) that you didn't post here, I'd go ahead and do it in case anyone else wants to follow up. Smile

Methinks you need to get your ARGdar tuned, it was an interesting read I'll give you that, but I think this smacks more of college-writer come curious entrepeneur than anything.

If there wasn't so much of the novel written I'd be less likely to dismiss it, but this seems pretty genuine in terms of presentation, if not for a lack of wanting to be a bit more mysterious.

Well, if it isn't an ARG then he will get three dollars from me either way. Thought I'd see if it would get me some sort of response. Maybe I can learn some more from contributing to the support of this mysterious writer. Hopefully it doesn't end up being a mistake on part... identity theft can be such a pain.

Thanks Phaedra!

It's nice when an anonymous comes out to talk trash. It's so brave.

Well, so far I've not been the victim of identity theft, though there hasn't been any pay off either. Maybe I just bought John his next hamburger. Oh well, c'est la vie.

I don't think this one is going to be an ARG. I received a thank you letter and two handouts with one chapter from the book. The handouts are approximately 3 x 4 inches. I can photograph the handouts and transcribe the letter if anyone is interested. He also offered to send me some flyers to distribute.
