Due direction = Compass?

Given her "due direction" comment, I suspect the solution has something to do with this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boxing_the_compass

Though what is beyond me. The number of lines is different . . . .

ok, so I worked with the sundial thing. I assigned the lines as I would a normal sundial and wrote down the numbers that the shading corresponds to.

I got this.
Code:
1 5
2 5
1 8
2 1

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Assuming those were letters, it became O-Y-R-U.
putting that in order from lightest shade to darkest gave me YOUR

So I think i got one of the words.

the answer is two words, and they're not to be gotten the same way.

I would probably feel a lot worse about stealing all your hard work and finding the second word like this if it weren't so darned apropos.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
YOUR SHADOW
