Rose, were you going to get more specific contact information for the hotels for us? Or should we just call and mention unfiction or ARGFest?

Oh, and such nice hotels they are, by the way.

The contact information for the hotels is being worked out - but I wanted to let everyone know that YES! we have hotels and we will have rooms for those who want them. Smile

I'll post the contact info needed for the group rate the minute I get it.

Ideal Arrival/Departure Times

If possible, I don't want to miss anything, but I do have work and family to consider.

When would be the best time to arrive in San Francisco? Thursday night? Friday morning? Friday afternoon? When would be too late?

I have to leave and get all the way back home Sunday night. When would be the earliest time to depart San Francisco, so that I don't miss anything on the schedule, such as it is? Sunday afternoon? Sunday night? When would leaving be so early that I missed part of the event?

Hard to say, but I'd say while some people may get in Thursday, most will arrive Friday. And people start leaving Sunday midday (I am generalizing mightily). This one may be different because it precedes a convention that some of our guests will also be attending, so PMs, designers and others might be available to hang out all of Sunday and even Monday.

You will find the return tough on schedules for east coast types - any reasonable departure time, with a multi-hour flight and the time difference, will get you home very late Sunday. Maybe you'd get to breakfast with people before you left. If you don't have to be completely useful Monday, you could consider a redeye (overnight) flight that would get you home Monday AM.

And don't forget to check flights into Oakland as well as SFO - often cheaper and expands your schedule options.

What is this game, you ask?

Well, I strongly recommend reading through all of the details posted at the website, but:
Quote:
Benevolent Attacks
At the start of the game, each team is assigned via text message a secret weapon, a secret weakness, and a surrender code.

* Your secret weapon is the act of kindness you perform on suspected targets. Example: Praise your targets' shoes. If you perform this weapon on the correct target, they will surrender. If you perform this weapon on other players who are not your target, they will say "You are too kind." If you perform this weapon on non-targets - well, we have no idea what might happen!
* Your secret weakness is the act of kindness that, if performed upon you, kills you. Example: Killed by a birthday serenade. You therefore want to avoid giving other players an opportunity to be kind to you. If you are attacked by a team wielding a weapon that matches your weakness, you must acknowledge the successful assassination and reveal your surrender code. If you are attacked by a team deploying the wrong weapon (not your secret weakness), you are still alive. However, you must tell them "You are too kind" so that they know they have at least successfully identified other players.
* Your surrender code is the single word that you must reveal to all of the players who have assassinated you. When you successfully assassinate other teams, you must demand their surrender code. Successful assassins will text the surrender code to the game system. That's how the game knows who is dead, who killed them, and who gets the points.

from: http://cruelgame.com/games/default.aspx

Be sure to take a look at the Benevolent Assassin's Guide!

RangerD and myself are the contacts through ARGfest for this game event, but be aware, sneaky ones: the game is open to ALL, and so you CANNOT depend on recognizing any of the ARGfest attendees for your attacks. Very Happy

Visit the scheduled games link near the top of this post to sign your team up now!

Happy hunting, and may I just say, your hair looks fabulous today!

Let's talk airfares

For those of you flying in, has anyone booked their tickets yet? What's the going airfare?

It looks like Southwest flies into Oakland instead of SF. Is this a viable alternative for arrival? Is it hard/easy/possible to get from the Oakland airport to the hotel by public transportation? Details please!

I have not yet booked tickets, but Kayak reports $365 as the lowest round trip nonstop from Atlanta, and that's down from a few weeks ago.

I just booked mine, Hojo will by Sunday, and we're getting round trip flights from Buffalo to SFO for $321CAD, about $274US, using Expedia.

Oakland is VERY EASY. There's a BART stop at both airports. A cab all the way from the Oakland airport would be expensive, but that's also true of SFO. Not sure how close BART gets to the hotel, but take it downtown and then cab from there (again, same for both airports). And I'm sure there are shuttle services at the airport too that would cost less than a cab and more than BART.

(I'm using frequent flyer miles so I can't help ya on the fares, but I'll bet you won't beat Southwest.)

There's a shuttle that runs every 10-20 mins that goes from the Oakland airport to the coliseum BART station which is probably the way to go. There's also a shuttle service that you can use which costs $25. The possible downside is that you have to make a reservation ahead of time and need to call it in when you get to the airport, and I'm not sure how long it takes for them to get out there.

What's the word on the Muni? Is it also a feasible transit option for hotel/airport commuting?

Muni operates only within the city, proper and handle the cablecar, streetcar and bus lines. I like the old streetcars myself, but some of the lines can get pretty crowded.
I haven't really ridden BART much, but IIRC, it goes from SFO, up through the city and then across the bay to Oakland (10,000 foot picture).

Also, when there are several large groups in the city all at once, like Fleet Week coinciding with the National Mayor's Conference, additional shuttles are assigned to carry commuters from East Bay parking areas to/from S.F.

Here's a rundown of stuff that connects to Muni
