I just remembered a short story I read somewhere, I think it was called "Hand of Glory" or some such...

Synopsis:
A priest does not like the decadency and degenerate nature tht has developed in his city, so he digs through the old temple records and finds a spell tht will call his goddess into the world from the great void where she was banished once upon a time. It has everything spelled out in great detail, what equipment, what material, and the exact wording that must be used. One object required by the spell is the hand of a courageous man. So he goes to the local cemetery and performs a little grave robbing on a long dead soldier... he returns to the temple and sets everything up and copied down the words of the spell, leaving out a specific phrase "in a pleasing form as will not harm me or mine" because after all this is hid goddess, she will appear as she desires, and of course why would she want to harm the servant that called her back from the great beyond. He casts the spell it is successfull, she appears in a terrible and beautiful form. She asks why she was summond, he wants her to correct all that is wrong in the town. She demands the hand of a courageous man, he offers the one hacked off the soldier, and she refuses it and demands his instead. After receiving her tribute she then goes about correcting all that is wrong in the town by going on a rampage and killing everyone.

And the moral of the story, when making a request of a powerful being make certain you use some paraphrase of: "in such manner as will cause no harm to anyone".....
