[PUZZLE] Boot, plume, beetle

I thought I'd start a new thread for this puzzle, I hope you all don't mind me jumping into the game in progress.

3 players received similar packages. Each contained a framed drawing with a code on the back, as well as a coded letter.

The Boot
Lovek wrote:
Got a new package. Pictures and comments follow (as usual, click images to see larger):

Package

Package contents (two items wrapped in paper as per usual, one of them is thick)

White envelope and paper it contained.

Inside white envelope (white envelope was blank). The black line from top to bottom on the right is a scanner problem. Just ignore it.

Inside thick, gray envelope. A nicely framed drawing of a boot.

And, of course, I opened the frame:

In the frame are two seperate sheets of paper, the boot drawing, and a piece of paper with this (again, ignore black line on the right):

A very nice, detailed drawing of a boot. This is NOT a copy. It was hand-drawn with pencil. Someone is talented.

Unfortunately, I thought I saw impressions at the bottom of the drawing, and so I pencil shaded them (I HATED to do anything to this drawing). I didn't get much out of it. It looks a lot like the writing on the other sheet of paper above, but it's VERY hard to make out. See below. I can't make anything more clearly than what you can see here:

Anyway, I think I can get all of the shading erased. I actually have somewhere in my house I want to hang this!

The Plume

Waiting for me tonight as I returned to Boston was a package from the illustrious CotSA! It is similar in form to Lovek's package #2, but different in content.

First off, my drawing was of a feather (quite nice):

Second, my note had different dots:

(Note the pillowcase, from the Target collection.)

Third, my offset-writing page was different as well:

The Beetle

Package number 3!

I got a very nice picture of a wooden hammer.

A much larger version is here. I think that I see a word written on the head of the hammer (bottom-left edge along the curve), but it may be detail in the drawing. I can scan the drawing if it's needed.

I also received the letter with dots and the offset writing hidden in the picture frame.

Welcome to the game Tyler Smile , thanks for compiling all that info, looks good!

I just wanted to add

Hi guys, I'm new to the thread.

Playing around with the boot drawing's offset letters, one possible anagram of thousands is "ONLY SEEKS TO RULE OIL". It could be this type of clue we are supposed to find. Since the plume and beetle letter strings are longer they could feasibly contain 8 and 10 words, respectively.

I think maybe anagrams are a good angle to explore, I've been trying on the Plume, but I haven't gotten anything substantial, except all three can form "seeks to".
I'll keep trying, but its a lot of letters and I'm having CassieWatching flashbacks Rolling Eyes

EDIT:
I forgot I also wanted to add

I'm also trying to piece our phrase segments together:

YOUR ANSWER TO THIS QUERY IN YOUR JUDGEMENT

Which if we take in one way would probably be the person who has a drawing with a rivets in it... which would be me. Or taken another way... they just mean the one we like the most Smile

But this part doesn't fit in anywhere... maybe it's supposed to be seperate:
the plume has eight and the beetle has ten

This seems to be the final, and most complete arranging of the order of the phrases. So, I'd like to also suggest. . .
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
submit to the committee a compendious
proclamation which employs the monikers
Of the complete triumvirate and expounds
WHICH PERSONAGE IS THE MOST RIVETING
the plume has eight and the beetle has ten
YOUR ANSWER TO THIS QUERY IN YOUR JUDGEMENT

The last two lines are pretty much interchangable to me.

I've been trying to think of anagrams in the "architects of our culture" vein, thinking along the lines of coming up with the names of 3 people. You can get "Leo Tolstoy" and "book" out of the first one, if you add the word "boot" to it. *shrug*

It has to be some sort of transposition...the distribution of letters is very english-like.

I've managed to pull a bunch of interesting things out of the Plume anagram. I'm thinking along the lines of it being an old fashioned ink quill.
I'm working on combinations of "York"(Second Continental Congress was held in York,PA after they were chased out of Philadelphia), and "liberate".
Maybe that will help someone.

The other thread on this subject lists some hints as to what these things mean. Working off of those and the anagram server, here is a list of the possible anagrams:

Coyote Son
Use/Sue Killer

Leek/Keel Boater Royalty
Whiskey Soother/Shooter/Hooters

Sleet/Steel Worker/Rework Protector
Melted By Bessemer

However, when looking at both of these threads, something stands out: I don't know what the Plume has height of that the Beetle has ten of. This part remains unsolved, in my opinion.

edited to add: the other thread lists what may be the most likely possibilities, I simply added the other possibilities to be complete

I am assuming that we are looking for three names of notable people of some kind. Given that, I would speculate that the name for the plume has 8 letters, and the name for the beetle has 10.

Okay, I'm very late to this game, but I'm intrigued, so I'll jump right in.

Keel Boater Royalty
Whiskey Shooter

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I'm thinking this has to be Mike Fink, who was a legendary keelboater and "whiskey shooter" as described in this anecdote: "He always had his woman along with him, and would allow no other man to speak with her. She was sometimes a subject for his wonderful skill in marksmanship with the rifle. He would have her hold on the top of her head a tin cup filled with whiskey, which he would put a bullet through. Another of his feats was to have her hold it between her knees, as in a vice, and then shoot"

Coyote Son
Sue Killer

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Could be Pecos Bill, who was supposedly raised by coyotes and who was (indirectly) responsible for the death of Slue-Foot Sue.

Steel Worker Protector
Melted By Bessemer

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
In keeping with the folklore theme, this would have to be Joe Magarac. In one story, he melted himself in a Bessemer furnace, and he's known as the "patron saint of steel workers".

That sounds really good aislyn!
I jumped the gun on this puzzle after Lovek got the first package and sent "Rosie the Riveter" to the Committee, they sent back
Quote:
we thank you for your submission, but must inform you that the rosy woman is not among the three. you are certainly on the accurate track, as your submission and the three were all born in a similar location.

Makes me think you hit the nail on the head with the American folk legend angle.

It all fits!

Don't forget, your answer should include "which personage is the most riveting"

Ok, so should I use the answers above (which sounds really good ) and send them in, but credit him, or should I just wait for the next puzzle? I send a postcard in today, basically just saying hi to the CoSA, but I'm not sure if should email in a solve as well? Hmm... I want to get in on this. I will talk to my Dutch friend tomorrow as well.

go ahead & email in a solve, you have to expound on your choice for the most riveting person, but be sure to mention all 3 names in the process.

I think maybe we should try and make sure we send answers including all three as the most riveting. Might be a good idea just in case theres a seperate package for each one. OTH, it might not matter at all. For what it's worth I sent Pecos Bill as my most riveting.
Quote:
I must first assign all acclaim to aislyn for the assertion regarding the "Boot", the "Plume", and the "Beetle".

aislyn adeptly made apparent our three acclaimed personas as

Mike Fink
Pecos Bill
Joe Magarac

I must adopt Pecos Bill as the most arresting of our trinity, mainly because of his akin ancestrage to that of Romulus and Remus. An architect (in myth) of the American West makes for a fine approximation to the authors (in myth) of Rome.

"Let reason guide our minds, and intellect sterr our actions."

I sent Joe Magarac as "most riveting." Haven't heard anything back yet though.
