[UPDATE] PXC Academy - 18 Oct 06 - Statement on Research

http://perplexcityacademy.com/office4.html

Quote:
Statement from the Academy

It is with great sadness and regret that I write this statement. Certain matters concerning high-level actions of the Academy and the Government of Perplex City have come to light which, though perfectly within the the remit of the appropriate bodies, have been seen by some as constituting misconduct.

As has been known for quite some time, earlier a group calling itself the Third Power, and using stolen Academy technology, managed to sever our data link to Earth. It seems probable that, at that time, they also created a limited-time gateway between our world and Earth. In the light of this, the Academy had no choice but to increase the intensity of its own research efforts into developing a stable prototype portal to Earth. At the time, to protect the citizens of Perplex City, I took the decision not to reveal the existence of these research efforts to the general public.

Some of this research took place at the Viendenbourg facility, where we have been able to mine limited quantities of an ore unique to the region which is vital in our work. The staff of Viendenbourg are dedicated and hard-working beyond all measure. Some brave men and women, all volunteers, have given up their lives in the service of this research, and for this we all owe them our gratitude. In addition, we owe it to their memories not to allow their lives to have been lost for nothing. They died in order that we should pursue our research and ultimately retrieve the Cube - which appears more and more likely to be potentially extremely dangerous in the hands of our enemies.

Everything we have done has been done to protect our beloved city. The race with the Third Power is one we cannot afford to lose, and I only hope that when you come to cast your votes today you will remember that. For us to refrain from pursuing this technology would be to sign the warrant for our own destruction.

Professor Sente Kiteway
Master of the Perplex City Academy

Does anyone else think this sound a lot like the rhetoric you'd hear from Bush these days? Apparently they've started their own:

War on DRUGS/TERROR/ELUSIVE SECRET SOCIETIES/INSERT YOUR ABSTRACT CONCEPT HERE

Should make for an interesting election...

Well, it certainly does sound like the standard disclaimer type of statement when any organization is caught in a scandal involving apparently questionable goings on.

Having said that, it could also be that what Kiteway (and Scott) are saying is true. Could it be that they were trying to respond to a threat?

What I am wondering is why Scarlett and Violet would have chosen to out their father's role in this in such a manner...

Probably because it'd be more damaging, both to him and their story, if they left Sente's name out. If they point fingers at Scott, he can insulate himself by saying Sente knew stuff as well. If they don't name anyone, then the Sentinel can take the story over and dig up Sente's name. The story then shifts to "The Kiteway daughters covered up for their father!"

Very true. I guess this will gain them a certain notoriety. It would certainly go a long way to grant Scarlett a post on the Sentinel...

I may well be gullible and naive, but i think i'm gonna buy it. For now, anyway, until we discover Iona's corpse in a back alley somewhere and Kurt and Caine take the Kiteway daughters into hiding. They have to find some way to transfer matter to get the Cube back, after all, and somehow I doubt the 3P is willingly gonna share their technology...

Yeah, but then why not test with inert matter, instead of live subjects? Sure, a live subject can tell you what's going on, but not if they die!

I was under the impression that they had progressed from inert matter, to animals to humans, at least that's how I read the data we were given...

Am I off my nut here?

If you are, so am I.

From the scambled file there was the message to Sente stating that they had progressed as far as they could with dogs. There must be something more complex about transporting humans that required them to go that far.

Was it not just that the dogs weren't giving them enough feedback? i.e. the dogs were barking a lot and then dying, when human subjects could have told them so much more about what was happening to them?

Or as it turned out could have said DROWNING a lot and complained about waves.

in theory i suppose, but you could get that information, in much greater lucidity, with tools, measuring devices, and gauges. So you send an object, it seems to work, you try a live specimen, it howls and explodes, you send more tools and gauges to see what happened.

Well yeah! That's the way I would go about it... If people came back and kept dying, I wouldn't send another one through to see what happens... Work wise, I live by the "If you cannot measure it, you cannot manage it" axiom. So more gauges and measuring tools it is!!

What if what was happening was that 3P was somehow scrambling their signal, making their attempts fail?
