[UPDATE] The Path of Least Time-20 October 06- Severed

Quote:
Severed
Friday, October 20 2006, 02:10 PM

At approximately 5:30pm today, I am going to press the button that will effectively sever communication between Perplex City and Earth. The official line is that data will merely be "screened for potentially dangerous or subversive material," and that we'll still be able to exchange information. Of course, that isn't true. Not only does our new Council Leader's order amount to censorship, but it also means that it will be impossible for me, or anyone else, to send any sensitive information over the link without it being flagged up.

I made this system to be secure against anyone, and it is. There are no backdoors and no routes around the firewall. It's monitored around the clock and has redundancies upon failsafes upon backups.

I think that Garnet was as surprised as I was that Earlywine was going to order the firewall. We all knew about his xenophobic attitudes toward Earth, but we didn't think they would be manifested so quickly and dramatically. Garnet put on a brave face when the news came through yesterday, and said that it was all for the best, and it was surely a temporary measure. I didn't even bother concealing my disgust, and just laughed sarcastically.

"A temporary measure? How are we supposed to find the Cube now, with Viendenbourg shut down and our hands tied behind our back?" I asked.

Garnet didn't answer, and just shook his head unhappily.

"Let's face it. Earlywine doesn't want to find the Cube, and while I don't agree with Sente's methods, at least he was trying to transport people to Earth. We're not going anywhere here, Garnet."

He simply walked away, and left me to set up the firewall.

On reflection, it didn't surprise me that Special Project 487 was run by Sente. In fact, it makes me feel slightly better, in a perverse way. He must have personally programmed the variant of the Djinn worm that hid all the data relating to the project, and if I'm going to be beaten, at least it was by the Master of the Academy.

No-one really knows what to think of Sente right now. I don't think you could find a single person who would defend the deaths of the five volunteers, but he did have authorisation directly from Camryn Scott. In light of the Third Power's activities - a group that has killed far more than five people - perhaps he felt it was justified. Of course, most people don't know about the Third Power, and even fewer believe what they hear.

There's an atmosphere of distrust here in the Academy, and particularly in the CRT. People dislike the Council's interference in our affairs, but there's a real sense of anger and betrayal at Sente, because he kept the operations at Viendenbourg secret. There were people at the Academy who must have known what was going on - for example, the Crypto department was involved - and that's made the tensions even worse. No-one understands the reasons for secrecy, and Sente clearly isn't telling.

Scarlett and Violet... I don't know how they're feeling, or whether they've talked to their father. I don't want to even think about that.

I don't know when the firewall will come down and I'll be able to talk to you openly again. In the face of the Third Power roaming free on Earth, the situation is looking bleak for the CRT to accomplish its mission of safely returning the Cube back to Perplex City. But we won't take this lying down. Earlywine will eventually learn what every Council Leader has had to learn - it's impossible to control the Academy. The Academy is Perplex City.

I'll see you soon. You'll know when the firewall is down.

Link

Not a huge surprise, but oh dear. Looks like we're on our own now, kiddies.

No surprises there, but do note that Kurt did say that communications would be filtered/censored, not severed. He doesn't seem to think there will be much information coming through, however...

We'll know when the firewall has gone down, I suppose that menas we will not be able to reach any of the PXC sites anymore?

They might well allow the sentinel through, but I'd imagine all the Earth facing blogs will be blocked.

Yeah official sites only I guess, mostly as PR for MC and their continued help rather than any real need on the part of PXC

Hmmm... To play devil's advocate here for a minute...

Wouldn't Earlywine stand to gain from having the Cube found on his watch? Perhaps all he's interested in is getting PXC culture back to the pre-Earth influence and he will allow comms between us and the city if they are related to the Cube search? On the other hand, perhaps he already knows where the Cube is and is simply playing things for time and to maximize his triumph??

Isnt Earlywine just being a bit simple to think that he can erase over 3 years worth of influence from Earth on an entire culture just by cutting off the link?

What are the odds that Earlywine has ties to 3P? Then it would make sense why he would do everything he could to interfere with Sente, CRT, and any efforts towards finding the cube, while using an opportune time cover up his true intentions.

It seems like many people shouldn't be as up in arms about the news about Sente and 487 as they are. If other departments around the Academy knew, then obviously many people were involved, at least somewhat knowledgable about what was going on, and ok with it.

It seems that from here on out, its Earth vs. 3P, and we'll be having minimal help from the people at PXC. This is it. The final showdown is coming.

One more thing, Receda's Revenge 2 is going to be played on Wednesday, so either the firewall will be down by then, or 3P has means of getting their information through. I know that there are many 3P members on earth and the site could be hosted locally, but the original Receda's Revenge was supposedly part of the chain of clues which the 3P used to communicate information between PXC and its agents here on earth, and so it makes sense that the new one would be doing the same. From this weeks newsletter:

Quote:
And even more strangely, Combed Thunderclap seems to be hinting us back towards an old favourite from earlier in the Cube trail:
text adventure Receda's Revenge, previously used by the Third Power to pass sekrit info between their agents!

This all comes back to me thinking that Earlywine has ties with 3P, and while most information will be censored, 3P will still be able to use the link.

Say it ain't sooooooooooooooooo....

Darn Kurt and his following orders mentality. If anyone could design the ultimate wall, it's him....

Still Garnet's attitude is a good sign, it shows that in the end he's probably on our side as much as anyone. After all if he was unhappy about this state of afairs it means he's with us, right?

I wonder if there is someone more knowledgeable about the PXCA systems that could break into it....

Actually...

CT probably could, been doing it for a while now, if Re-ceda's Revenge 2 is their idea then, could it be a way to reopen a rouge link?

Just throwing darts, hoping one will stick, lots of speculation...

Ooooh, I'm glad it wasn't just me that specced Re-ceda's Revenge 2 being a way to open a link.

This could easily be taken two different ways.

One (Kurt the unwilling follower of orders):

"I'm following orders for now, nothing I can do about it. However, I happen to know that this lockdown's only temporary, until the Council gets a good sample of Earth-side correspondence and sees that Earlywin'es making a fool of himself. Yeah, he's a hothead, but there are other, cooler heads on the Council that should be able to prevail."

Two (Kurt the seemingly-loyal citizen with Sekrit Revolutionary Plans(TM), dun dun DUNNNNN!!):

"Even though I've been ordered to design this Great Firewall of Perplex City, I've got administrative access to it and a Sekrit Plan(tm). The firewall will come down, and when it does you will definitely know about it!

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought that. Why would he say "I'll see you soon"? It's not like Kurt to be the hopeful optimist type...

Methinks our young pal has something up his sleeve...

Stupid Stupid Trout Me Question

If the link is down, I shouldn't be receiving "leaked emails" any more, right?

I am new and have been solving groups of cards over the weekend and have four leaked emails that have been sent since Saturday morning.

?????

Well, you wouldn't think so. But I hear that leaked emails are still being received. Not sure if this is a hint that there is still a way to get through, or simply an oversight in the programming of the game...

Guess we have to wait and see...
