Okay, so we've got a chat scheduled for Saturday, which I could certainly tell John is inconvenient if no one can make it, but I went with it at the time.

Assuming sometime Saturday is good, what time should the chat be? The 8-12 pm PST time on the calendar event is pretty arbitrary (though based on what time I've seen John showing up online), I really have no idea what our various time zones are.

I've got work until 5pm PST but I might be able to take time off earlier, and I'll make the effort to do so if that's what works out best for the most people.

The chat medium will be AIM unless there's universal disagreement -- it's free and has the ability to host chat rooms, and John won't use IRC due to security concerns. Everyone who doesn't have an AIM screenname can sign up at www.aim.com. There's even a Javascript client if you don't want to download the program, though I don't know if that one can handle the chat rooms.

Once you've got a screenname and have AIM installed, post your screenname here or PM it to me so I can invite you to the chat room. It's called Ny Takma Chat and I've been trying to figure out a way you guys can get in without an invite but it's late at night. You can try going to Actions, then "Buddy Chat" and typing in my screenname (linguisticphoebe) and "Ny Takma Chat" (no quotes), but I don't know if that'll actually work. If it doesn't, [url=aim:gochat?roomname=Ny+Takma+Chat]click here[/url], which I think will get you into the chat room. (But again, can't test because I'm at work)
If that doesn't work and you don't mind a bit of possibly-dodgy freeware that I don't know how to use because I just found it and can't test it at work, try this. It claims to let you directly join a public chat room without having to worry about getting invited.

 		i'd personally like something earlier, as the 8-12PST time period is in the wee hours of the early morning for me. However, i'm guess most of you guys are in the US, so majority rules.

Anytime is OK for me. But we need to make sure as many players as possible are able to participate.

So

Maybe a good time would be Sunday at noon (12pm PST (GMT-7)) to 3 pm PST to give a more rounded out time frame for everyone.

EDIT:

I got a new screen name so everyone will recognize me easier. Sylviaaaaaaaa -- that's 8 A's.

I kept adding A's until i got a name that was not already in use.

 		Anyone know if I can get in on this with an ICQ account? I guess I could get an AIM account, but I'd rather not if I don't have to.

As to the time, my in-laws are visiting this weekend, so there's no telling what my schedule will be. The Saturday night one might be better, but don't schedule around me. As long as there's a transcript later, I don't mind if I don't make it for the chat.

 		Molecularr, the two should be interoperable, check here, though I admit I've never tried joining an AIM chat room from an ICQ account myself...

I'll email and ask John if Sunday sometime early afternoon would work out for him and Hank. Say maybe 2 or 3 pm PST? I don't think I could get off work and home for the chat any earlier than about 3, but if we can get the room set up so people can come and go freely, then like molecularr it wouldn't be a big deal if I missed the chat.

On the other hand I don't want everyone to say that it's okay if they miss the chat and then end up with no one IN the chat. Wink

 		Getting Ready for Tomorrow's Chat
This is what worked for me: I am using AIM Triton 1.5 from
http://www.aim.com/
(if you get this, be sure to get the plugins that go with it)

1. In AIM -- Click on [Actions], then [Buddy Chat]

2. Enter your own screen name for me that was TheSly11111 Sylviaaaaaaaa

3. Enter Ny Takma Chat for the chat room

4. Click on [Send]

5. Yea, you are there. Try it out now.

 		older AIM Chat invitation instructions
My AIM software says:
AOL Instant Messenger
Version 4.8.2790
Copyright 1996-2002
(I've never installed AOL dialup on this computer, it's just the original AIM)
(no wise cracks about my ancient ways)

To invite yourself to the chat room:
1) Highlight your own nick (or the nick of a buddy who also wants to join the chat
2) Select from the menu People > Send Chat Invitation
3) Important to change the default Chat Room name to NyTakmaChat
4) then hit Send

Another route is to put this line into your browser's address bar, like a URL:
aim:GoChat?RoomName=NyTakmaChat&Exchange=4&Instance=-1

And lastly, another way is to create a text file with the following:

 launch aim:GoChat?RoomName=Ny%20Takma%20Chat&Exchange=4&Instance=-1
}
Config {
 prompt false
 version 1
}
and save the file as nytakmachat.blt then you can open the file by double-clicking on it (you must have AIM running at the time). I don't know if these options work for Trillian users.

 		Okay. John says anytime later in the day Saturday or Sunday is fine. I'm leaning towards Saturday for Molecularr (what's your ICQ #? PM it to me? I can try inviting you to the chat from AIM, I think it may work) and maybe 4 pm PST/7pm EST?

Also, John was kind of over-the-top when he showed up in our working-out-the-details pre-chat chat, so Sylvia and I have tried to get him to tame it down. Hopefully Hank will also be a good influence on him during the real event. Cather, he's apologized for his language.
