[NEW] altusveritas site
The definition of AV and a new site

AngBa told us in chat that inside the book Credo on page 13, some letters are underlined. They spell out "altusveritas". Great Truth.

I pointed out that they also stand for A V.

There is a site here.

The marks are very hard to make out, so I modified it a bit. Here are the exact letters that are underlined:

From the altusveritas site: "Altus Veritas was created by papal decree by order of Pope Alexander in 1410. Some scholars refer to him as Peter of Candia."

Pope Alexander V = AV

The name of the person who made the original posting about the history of AV is Fulkes de Villaret. Fulkes de Villaret was a member of the Knights Hospitaler. I think it's safe to say that we're looking at a well-done, but VERY in-game site.

Who wants to conatct them first? I'm going to let the doc know.

EDIT: Ok, he knows, but is more focused on IG weirdness in the "relationship" between him and Banana. (also, replaced a misread Templar, with Hospitaler)

Yeah, Doc is weird tonight - whatever he did this weekend, he won't talk about....

He thinks I'm mad at him...

I'm sure that someone has tried to contact the AV site - and I hope that information is posted as soon as possible. Twisted Evil

Interesting find, Wabonan; my Latin grammar is crap and my fiance's vocabulary is rusty, but I don't *think* it's lorem-ipsum junk text. I doubt they're especially related, but if anyone thinks otherwise I can apply some linguistics-fu.

Personally, I'm more interested in the login/password thing in the sidebar on altusveritas.com. Note that there's also an "email new password" link which leads to a form that takes either a username or an email address; it has to be an already-valid username or email, I don't see a way to sign up.

This could be bruteforced to yield a valid username, then the login could be bruteforced to find a valid password for that username, but I'm reluctant to do that, since I'm given to understand that's poor ARG etiquette. I can code it up in Python if people think we need to resort to that, though.

FWIW, I tried jochen, peiper, jochenpeiper, jochen.peiper, drjpjr, doctorjpjr, joachim, and joachim.peiper as usernames, and none of them were recognised as valid.

Also, just to satisfy a bit of curiosity on my part -- would someone go to the Contact page, view source, and look for the value in the edit-form_token tag? I get 281b5bf301512e093392574733398cf4 every time I reload, and I'm wondering if that's static ( it might be ascii, now I think about it... nm, f3 is way too high to be an ascii code, guess it's just random hexadecimal)[/strike]

Mycroft observed that
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
"Fulkes de Villaret" had posted something to altusveritas.com, so I tried that as a username in the request-new-password form.
It worked; it also works in all lowercase, but spaces are required.

So, next question: what's his password?

(begin semi-OOG speculation)

So, either they're using an out-of-the-box content management system, in which case that form probably does generate a new, random (and unguessable w/o bruteforce) password and email it to the user. Or they did their own scripting (pretty easily done, it's not a complicated site), in which case the POST message sent by the form goes to a dummy function that doesn't actually do anything and we still need to guess the password.

Which is better to assume?

(end semi-OOG speculation)

edit: added spoiler tags, sorry, I suck

Good job on unconvering the password that quickly, but now the site has been locked down. What do you want to bet that the PM didn't expect us to actually assault the login that quickly and break it?

Gah. Remind me not to ARG when I'm tired, since clearly I miss obvious things...good one Wabonan.

Anywho, they replaced the sidebar with some different text (woo css templating), but as you can see if you look for yourself, http://altusveritas.com/user is still alive and well. I tried
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
fulkes de villaret
as username and
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
altusveritas
as password, and couldn't get in; however, the username clearly still exists, because you can try to request a new password using it. He's probably been passwd'ed, is my guess.
