Only Revolutions
"House" author's new story/puzzle

Mark Danielewski's new book Only Revolutions is a dense and complex story. The book is really two books, written by a brother and sister who have lived without aging, and are always 16.

The words intertwine, the first letters of sentences spell messages, colors change depending on reference, and the story is anything but straightforward. It's perfect for the ARGer who likes to think outside the typical boundaries.

Here's the link for the hidden things discussion.

and the Wikipedia entry, that gives you some sense of what you'd be getting into... If you enjoyed Cryptonomicon, this is a step up.

The National Post, a nation-wide paper in Canada had a full page article about Only Revolutions a few weeks ago. What was interesting was that this article was written Danielewski style. You know, with text wrapping aorund everywhere, upsidedown mirrored pages... The works. Good times, allthough, in the words of Therum in #unfiction "I bet that the 'normal readers' were probably a bit confused".

Here's a scan: if you look carefully, you can read the outside text, the stuff about the book. The actuall pages are unreadable due to the low quality of the scan (so that it isn't a huge file).

Just to clarify, Hailey and Sam are lovers, not siblings. And I'm not sure how to describe their agelessness. I mean, their story is historically situated, so to speak.

It's really a beautiful book, but I'd compare it more to Finnegans Wake. Its text is sort of hard to describe -- highly poetic and lyrical, but so much so that it's often hard to follow what's actually happening page to page.

Also, sort of like an ARG, the author solicited input from people on the House of Leaves messageboard. We didn't know what the book was about at that point, so we just supplied our answers to a series of questions. Some of us speculated at the time that MZD was using an ARG to launch the then code-named project, THAT.

I've found 2 or 3 of my contributions so far.

He also sent us advance reader copies a few months before it came out, which was pretty cool.
