[META] PerplexCity Boardgame
The site for the boardgame

As found inTheQuestion's post from August 27th, Perplex City the board game is now live.

At the bottom is this statement:

" Perplex City is a distant land with a taste for puzzles, and their most valuable artefact has been stolen and buried somewhere on Earth. There's a real-life £100,000 reward for whoever can find it using the clues scattered across the internet and the 256 beautifully-designed, individually-solvable puzzle cards, ..."

I think this says that the clues to find the Cube are scattered across the internet and the cards. Does this end the META discussion about whether the cards have clues to finding the Cube?

Firebox dispatched the boardgame today. Looks like those who pre-ordered should have it on Monday Smile

Woohoo! It arrived along with a free Wave 1-3 pack! Just a very boring conference call is preventing me from opening it!

Edit: So, any ideas for a drinking game? Wink

We were talking about this in #syzygy a bit last night. I do think that there's clues on the cards; whether they will somehow directly lead to the location of the cube, I'm not sure.

We've been told that we wouldn't need to buy cards to find the cube:

Does this mean that the information on the cards is not required to recover the Receda Cube, or that the physical cards themselves are not required? Mind Candy does seem to encourage the sharing of knowledge amongst the cube hunters (I think the existance of Billion to One and The Thirteenth Labour is proof of that) so I'm leaning towards the information on the cards being important.

Now, regarding the boardgame's website: what interested me is not so much the blurb at the bottom of the page, but what the blurb linked to. Here's the blurb again, with links added (and bolded to be easier to see):

So, we have links to:

  • PerplexCity.com
  • The page on PerplexCity.com about the Cube
  • Scarlett's blog
  • The Sentinel
  • Cognivia
  • The list of retailers selling puzzle cards
  • The Getting Started page

The first two are understandable--PerplexCity.com is, arguably, the most important site for cube hunters to know about, as that's the central hub of the ARG. And the page about the Cube is a good way to explain the most important aspect of the game (at least for season one)--finding the cube.

Likewise, the last two are understandable as well. The ARG is supposed to be self-supporting, so it makes sense to link to the retailers page, as MC likely make the most of their money via the sale of puzzle cards. The Getting Started page also teaches newcomers how to be involved; something I feel is important, as many of us don't come from an ARG background.

The middle three, though--those are interesting. You could argue that Scarlett's blog was included so that newcomers would know that some of the characters "speak" directly to us--but then, why not Violet's blog, or Kurt's? Why Scarlett's? Is there some important information in her blog we've been missing?

It makes sense to link to the Sentinel, as that's one of our major sources of information about Perplex City. Lately, though, I've been wondering if we've been overlooking some of the news articles to focus on the ones that seem most important at the time. Perhaps it would be a good idea to look back through the archives, and see if anything jumps out at us now.

The real kicker for me, though, is the inclusion of Cognivia. We haven't had a reason to discuss Cognivia in a while. Why bring them up now?

I've been wondering about the bigger picture lately. It feels like we've been focussed on the immediate goals at hand... finding out about Project 487 and Combed Thunderclap and all the backstory of the war. But what about all those Sentinel articles we've overlooked? Things like the PCAG, and tabloid news such as the ever-revolving relationships of Joya & Helix Hesh, and all these headlines that never get expanded on. How do they all fit into the bigger picture? There's got to be a reason Mind Candy is telling us this stuff. I think it's time to dig deeper.

Thoughts?

[RSM]Communication between the worlds in getting more difficult, but our enimies still need to contact each other. To that end, The Third Power has placed an inside man at the Sentinel who includes hidden messages in articles that are to be part of the Earth edition. Find out which writer and start putting those stories together.[/RSM]

I agree with this, but I have nothing to go on. I have noticed items that seem like hints in the Sentinel, but I haven't been able to find any other sub-directories. Maybe we haven't dug deeply enough, I am fairly certain there are things we have missed. (We didn't find Combed Thunderclap until after the page had been posted for a while - and that is assuming it went up at the launch of Wave 4 though it could have been as early as wave 3 as we had most of the letters - and we had gotten lots of fairly direct hints.)

The problem I have is not knowing what to do. This game tends to point out the puzzles that must be solved very clearly; the rest of them, I don't think anyone has come up with a way to follow the breadcrumbs of subtle hints.

Anyone have more specific ideas of what we can do?

Though it doesn't preclude an IG reason for putting Cognivia on the list, I
think it deserves to be there for marketing reasons. The three sites cover the full range of PXC sites (blog, newspaper, commercial) and between them should pique someone's interest. There are a number of other sites that would fulfil the same purpose (whipsmart and the, admittedly deliberately, crap-looking brotherhood of the six site), but cognivia is nice and shiny and not going to ruin any nice "reveals" for new players. The boardgame also bridges the gap between Seasons 1 and 2, so maybe they've used ones that won't be ditched for Season 2. Sadly this hypothesis would mean they're not going to kill off the chirpily annoying red one. Bummer.

Now, if only the US Firebox website would go up... waiting on ordering it until it does.

EDIT: Although, it *does* look like the Paizo website is taking pre-orders...
