First thought is a jigsaw or a puzzle-box or something. Second thought is a riddle of any kind. Or, to be more precise, a riddle-situation that involves some kind of object manipulation (like in a video game or a Rubik's Cube).

I've always thought "Puzzle Trail" or "Riddle' (Referring to a puzzle trail) were named kinda funny. "Challenge" always seemed a better moniker.

When I read "random puzzle question", I thought puzzle trail, but only because this is posted on unfiction. More specifically, I thought it might be a ROT or some other standard crypto. Those have been done to death. Aspiring PM's, please stop it.

If you had said "puzzle" to me on the street, I wouldn't associate it with ARG's, and I'm pretty sure my first thought would be Rubik's Cube.
