Need Web-Site Help

I have looked through the PM Recruitment section and still can't find what I am looking for. The reason? Because I'm not really quite sure what skill is needed for this type of thing (I'm not very bright you see).

Anywho, I am looking for someone who can create a web-site where people will need to enter a username and password in order to access certain pages of the site (a different username and password will access a different page).

I can do everything else (place links, add content, etc.), I just don't know how to do the whole un/pw aspect of it all (or you can make the whole thing, big weight off of my shoulders, heh).

I have been told that it is something that is supposed to be very simple to do, but my head keeps spinning when I try to learn how to do it.

I am willing to explain more of what I am talking about in detail once contacted.

There's a couple of different ways you can do it. I do seem to remember that there was a javascript key/pass code that encrypted the passcode into a number string, and then redirected to <that-password>.html. All fine and dandy, but breakable since the number is hard-coded into the html.

Another option would be to code the submit page (php most likely) to redirect based on the submitted values.

A final option would be to just code the submit page completely out of php to be drawn on-the-fly based on the submitted values, but it seems like you want that middle one. It gives you the ability to use specified html page names (you know, if you want people to be able to later access pagefortyfive.html) without giving too much away in the html of the front page.

EDIT: Oh, some-ONE. PM sent.

If you have control over the server directories, i think htaccess is the quick and dirty way to go, rather than any coding. Granted, each web page which needs its own password would also need to be stored in its own directory, but if you use the directory name as the URL (and the page itself is just index.html within the directory) the user won't mind. This gives you the boring popup input box for username, rather than coding a form on each page.

That is a good idea and looks like it could work for what I am trying to do. However, I need the site to look like every other site like it and so I don't think that the "pop-up" thingy is going to work.

I have saved some sites about "htaccess" for future reference though. Looks easy enough for even me to do, so thank you.

Actually, they *don't* need to all be in their own directory. If you use the <Files> directive, you can specify individual files.

An example: Notice that http://matrix.theblob.org/index.html is free of a password, but http://matrix.theblob.org/protected.html needs a username/password. This is done with the following in the .htaccess file:

Code:
<Files "protected.html">
  AuthType Basic
  AuthName "Username/Password for protected.html: protected/mypassword"
  AuthUserFile /home/matrix/htpasswd-protected.txt
  Require valid-user
</Files>

In this way, the authentication commands only take effect for the file "protected.html". Hope this helps. Smile

website help
I can help

Hi,

I have made a small CMS (content management system) that allows someone with no knowledge of html or php to set up and maintain a database-driven site. It can assign different access levels to members, such that some pages are viewable by the public and others are only viewable by members. The Admin area has higher access level requirements, such that one level can only add content to pages, while another can add/remove pages, users, and groups. It's all form-based and very easy to use.

Requirements are a host that runs php/mySQL, and that you have ftp access and database access. The package is free, but I'd have to charge for personal help, since that's how I make my living. You can see the "front end" (the website it creates) at this link. You can contact me via my design site at this link.
