[UPDATE] Sentinel - 3 Nov 06 - Earlywine Planning Committee

Well, that answers one question: we do still get Sentinel updates. I think these are all new.

Earlywine Planning to Appoint Academy Oversight Committee
By JOHN CORMORAN

Newly elected City Council Leader Nathan Earlywine has announced a plan whereby the council will appoint a nine-member committee to oversee the Academy. "It is clear that under the administration of [Academy] Master [Sente] Kiteway, the Academy has lost its way," Earlywine said. "It is my hope that the reintroduction of transparency to the highest levels of the Academy will restore the public's trust in the Academy and in the City Council."

Few specifics of the plan are established, though Earlywine said that the committee members would be appointed by the council. Nominations for committee members will be made and debated by late next week, and once it has been selected, the committee itself will set its own agenda and timeline. Political analysts agree that the move is the first in what may prove to be a concerted effort to remove Kiteway from the mastership of the institution.

Former leader and current Council Member Camryn Scott said that it was only to be expected, though she is personally against the plan. "Adding an extra layer of bureaucracy to the Academy's decision-making processes will have no benefits," she said. "The Academy will lose some of its institutional agility, and the city will suffer for it. ... The more opinions are brought to bear, the slower and less effective a process becomes."

Earlywine fired back after Scott's statement, calling her words "telling." He said that "Scott's administration has been riddled with attempts to subvert democratic processes," and added that he has no doubt that the committee will prove more effective in furthering the public interest.

Kiteway issued a terse statement saying the Academy would "bow to the council's decision." He did not respond to queries for further comment. Earlywine has long been a critic of Kiteway's tenure at the Academy and often accused Scott of allowing Kiteway too much independence from public oversight.

Brotherhood Maintains Plan for Restitution
By LUCAS VOORHIES

The Brotherhood of the Six announced today that it is still planning to hold its traditional Restitution of the Cube festival at the winter solstice, quieting the rumours to the contrary that have sprung up in recent weeks. Sister April Flynnt delivered a prepared statement in which she said that the Brotherhood will continue to "stand fast to the teachings of Gyvann."

The festival will not be reduced in scale or spirit, Flynnt said, and the expected public meditations, candle-lighting ceremonies, and feasts will be open to all as in previous years. "The season should not be reduced in brightness for any one of us," she said. "Now more than ever we need the strength of the Cube to carry us through our modern times."

The Brotherhood and other Cubist orders have been suffering on a variety of fronts since mid-October, when the Sentinel unearthed evidence that the Receda Cube is of man-made origin, and potentially intended for use as a weapon. These facts, if true, would undermine centuries of religious doctrine holding the artefact as a symbol of peace and an expression of the universal strength of the sacred Cube. Reports show that attendance at religious services have decreased by nearly 20% in the past few weeks.

Former Reconstructionist Jessica Holyoke said that "loads of people have left the compound" in recent days, including herself. "That place is just bleeding brothers and sisters," she said. "The higher-ups are sticking it out so far, but the rest of us are wondering what we gave up our keys for."

Flynnt said that the city is currently undergoing a "crisis of faith," but that the peace that believers feel upon performing acts of construction and observing similar traditions should be sufficient incentive to continue. "As long as people need wisdom and inner strength, we will continue to celebrate the words of Gyvann," she said.

Earth Answers Often Stunningly Wrong
By KATE BREWSTER

Earth's shambolic hoi polloi of would-be puzzle champions moved a step closer to imploding under the gravitational forces of their own breathtaking stupidity yesterday, as they continued to guess wildly at hideously implausible solutions, causing experts to strike a comparison between their futile, wrongheaded spasms of illogic and a rabble of drunk, blindfolded zombies.

"45," guessed notverytame75 as she attempted to solve #217 Tower Of Cubes - displaying a stupefying failure to comprehend the basic principles of mathematics. "84," she continued, as passers-by openly wept with a mixture of pity and contempt. Meanwhile, Starlightlovers flailed in a hopeless attempt to find the answer to 232 Water Music. "Orange juice," she tried.

"Water," she added, randomly entering words from the puzzle's title in a spectacularly witless guess fuelled by incomprehensible neurological misfirings. Following this, a "deafening whirring noise" was reported throughout the city, as the Academy's founders spun furiously in their respective graves.

In the land of the blind, the one-eyed-man is king, and similarly, mac_monkey now leads the 47,000 strong horde of ignoramii, whom analysts agree are not so much "sharp" as "requiring something sharp to drive deep into their eye-sockets, possibly stimulating the otherwise lifeless grey matter beneath."

Samara Jones, PCAG analyst, spat: "I've conducted extensive research into the solving patterns on the Earth leaderboard, and all I can say is: Kill me. Kill me now."

"That said, there were some elegant solves to be found amongst the hideous errata. Elegant, that is, like a brick in the face," said Jones. She continued: "I can feel the bile rising in my throat just thinking about it."

Arabela is this week's least-offensive puzzler with 4647 points in the past six days, while Christian, who has solved 208 cards in the past month, has just about managed to proceed with slightly more purpose than a rabid and flea-ridden dog, hysterically chasing its own tail.

View From Earth:
Food and Lifestyle
By SARAH HUNT

Sarah HuntIn the last two years, we have learnt a lot about Perplex City, but we have never really learnt about the types of food Perplex City eats. It has always been in the back of my mind: "What is their regional food?" Stoke-on-Trent and neighbouring areas have chips and gravy and Scotland has haggis and other such regional foods.

Earth, as a world, seems ridiculously addicted to this so-called fast food, where we go to food chains and order food that is fast to cook and usually fried, such as burgers and chips. This is usually rather greasy and unhealthy food. Eating this stuff is more and more common and accepted as a regular meal. Instead of cooking your own food, why not head out to a McDonald's and pick up a Big Mac meal? It's cheap, and quick! I hasten to add that I am not in agreement with this at all and am against it, as are many doctors, as it is leading to an increase in heart disease and many other related diseases. It also has been linked to an increase in obesity, definitely found in children that eat these fast foods very commonly. It has led me to wonder if Perplexians have similar food chains, and whether they are finding similar problems to those that we on Earth are facing. I know Perplex City is eerily similar to Earth, as it has restaurants and bars, just like we do, but from what I can gather from the research I have done, Perplex City actually doesn't seem to have these "fast food joints," to use a common term of slang that we on Earth use.

Moving on from this topic, onto another that is greatly debated on Earth: Earth is famous for the fad diets that we choose to have control over our eating and our weight. With the increase in the eating of fast food and obesity, more Earth people than ever turn to these fad diets to regain some control and their old figures. They even go as far as to abstain from eating meat, and call themselves vegetarians. There are also people that go further along these lines and abstain from eating meat, and dairy products as well. These people are generally known as vegans.

These are the more commonly accepted diets. There are many others, such as low carbohydrate diets and low fat diets. People spend their entire life stressing about their weight, and switching from one diet to another. It can even manifest itself in various mental disorders.

The mental disorders are very little known or talked about. They range from not eating; to eating and then purging your body of the food; to not being able to stop eating. They endanger people's lives, because of the obsession with food and our bodies that has been caused by celebrities.

I cannot help but wonder if Perplexians have similar troubles to us, as Earth and Perplex City are very similar to each other. Are the mental disorders more widely accepted? Is fast food being phased out steadily, along with fad diets? With everything we know about Perplex City, and everything you know about Earth, there are still many things that we can learn from each other every day, both good and bad. It's healthy to do so, and I believe that learning from other races is important to our everyday growth and expansion, whether we agree with the different views they may have, or not. I feel there is so much more that we can learn from each other, and I hope we can continue to expand each others' views.

Futures
By Madame Bianca, for the fortnight of November 3

The Dice (October 11 - November 10)
A bold gamble over the weekend leaves you wishing for a new pair of galoshes. Sadly, the stars decree that you will be unable to locate an acceptable pair in your size, no matter how many stores you visit. Beware of errant viruses.

The Maze (November 11 - December 10)
Your tastebuds act up these next few days, meaning that your coffee is always too strong, vegetables too mealy, and meats all have a smoky flavour reminiscent of salmon. It should pass by the 13th, but in the meantime stick to brothy soups, risotto, and chocolate.

The Apple-Thief (December 11 - January 10)
I'll not leave thee, thou lone one! To pine on the stem; since the lovely are sleeping, go, sleep thou with them. Thus kindly I scatter thy leaves o'er the bed, where thy mates of the garden lie scentless and dead.

The Hand (January 11 - February 10)
An unforeseeable incident involving autumn leaves, a broken lock, and fiifteen pounds of chess pieces leave you the boss in the office for a few days. Don't let the power go to your head, darling, what goes around comes around.

The Baby (February 11 - March 10)
A sudden and uncharacteristic desire to engage in physical activity in the great outdoors gives you a surprising energy boost. And you wonder why all of the experts keep recommending you get more exercise. Honestly. Keep it up and you just might find a new twinkle in that special someone's eye by December.

The Eagle (March 11 - April 10)
You sail through early November smoothly and easily, but by the middle of the month it will be nothing but nonstop interruptions and distractions. Make a list, muffin, and then pare it down to only the things you have to do. Save the ones you want to do, for now. Don't worry, you'll have a lot of free time coming to you before long.

The Spider (April 11 - May 10)
You are afflicted with a strange feeling of emptiness, deep in your soul. Don't rush out to join any humanitarian organisations, though; this is a very bad time for you to embark on any philanthropy, and you'd frankly just make things worse for the people you were trying to help. Stick to hot baths instead, pumpkin.

The Wave (May 11 - June 10)
You may try to keep your bad news a secret, but these things have a way of getting out, don't they? Resign yourself to public humiliation for next week, and meanwhile use the mortification-fueled drive to keep it from happening again, 'k?

The Archer (June 11 - July 10)
This is an unlucky fortnight for you, though worse luck is on the way. I highly suggest you don't engage in unnecessary travel or dining out for a while, and absolutely under no circumstances should you participate in gambling or team sports. Unless you're playing against me, I'll go easy on you, I promise.

The Half-filled Jug (July 11 - August 10)
Someone you trust isn't all that, sweet pea. You may be trying to look beneath the surface and give people a fair shake and all that, but let's be honest, here. Sometimes you can judge a book by the cover. Especially if it's by that hack, Applebaum.

The Dragon (August 11 - September 10)
These next few weeks you will relish time to yourself. You're starting to need some solid time for quiet introspection and self-examination and all of that reflective nonsense. You'll have to do it in the shower, though, because that's going to be the only time you get to yourself for a long, long while, dumpling.

The Three Balls (September 11 - October 10)
You must absolutely keep a pen and a small notebook on your person at all times from now through the 11th. I can't predict why, exactly, but I do know if you don't, you're going to miss out on a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity once your key fails on you. Which it will, mere seconds before you desperately need it.

And remember, as the oak is, so will the acorn be.

Heh! I forgot the letters though:
Quote:
EARTH SPEAKS...

This is an open letter to Council Leader Earlywine from the people of Earth.

We are shocked and dismayed by your recent actions, Mr. Earlywine. Here on Earth, we have worked hard to ensure a free flow of information between Earth and Perplex City so as to keep the citizens of Perplex City informed on our status in the search for the Receda Cube. After all, it's hard for people to believe they're ever going to recover something they've lost unless they hear from those who are searching for it.

We have shared the information we gathered while attempting to locate the Receda Cube, and the views we have developed on the many facets of Perplex City life because we wanted you to learn about us and how we work together to achieve a goal such as the successful recovery of the Receda Cube.

We freely admit that we aren't perfect: we love, we hate, we argue, we fight, and sometimes we let our differences divide us instead of looking past them to the common threads that are shared by all - threads that should bind us together. But not once did we shy away from your requests - indeed, we did our best to fulfill them.

But we believe that our greatest moment thus far occurred when the main Earth-to-Perplex City data link was disrupted by agents of an organization known as The Third Power, who told us to "say goodbye to Perplex City!" (Quoted directly from the messages they sent once they had successfully cut the link.)

It was feared that the carrier wave would dissipate, forever crushing the hope that the Receda Cube would be found and returned - but many of us here on Earth formed a single, massive group dedicated to making sure that the secondary San Francisco link was activated so that information could once again flow between Earth and Perplex City. It was a difficult task, and even with our best minds taking on this mighty challenge, we barely managed to activate the San Francisco terminal before the carrier wave faded. In fact, reliable sources at both Mind Candy and the Perplex City Academy informed us that the carrier wave was mere minutes away from fading completely when they picked up the signal from San Francisco.

And now, after all the work that went into ensuring that communications between Earth and Perplex City remained open, your first act is to have it locked down. This drastic action - to practically shut down the data link after all the effort we put into making sure it stayed operational - represents not only a grave setback to years of Cube recovery efforts, but a sure impediment to any further efforts.

What's next, Mr. Earlywine? Considering your current attitudes, we fear that the citizens of Perplex City may be facing a greater loss than that of the Receda Cube: the loss of the rights and privileges they take for granted in their daily lives. Such things have been known to happen in situations such as these.

This may sound alarming to some people, and perhaps it is. But we, the undersigned, speak for those on Earth who have sacrificed their time and efforts to assist in the maintaining of the Perplex City-Earth link. Your actions and attitude are not conducive to a successful outcome. They serve only to hinder it.

You have taken advantage of panic and outrage to further your own ends, and we consider this a deplorable act on your part - indeed, we would consider it a deplorable act on the part of any public servant. We have worked with the people of Perplex City in good faith, and for our efforts we have gotten closer to recovering the Receda Cube that those in Perplex City long for.

But we now see a political coup staged in a time of fear, uncertainty, and doubt generated not out of any reasonable cause - but an experiment whose potential benefits were ignored and whose flaws were magnified and twisted out of proportion. We see the beginnings of a repressive state in what was once a free society.

We call on you to reconsider your actions, Mr. Earlywine, and we call on the citizens of Perplex City to stand with us in rejecting your policies. Your attitudes and actions do not assist us in locating the Receda Cube; indeed, your interference only hinders our joint efforts.

However, despite our dismay at the unfortunate choices that Mr. Earlywine has made, we bear no ill will towards the people of Perplex City. Indeed, we consider the people of Perplex City to be our friends, and we hope that this parting between our respective cultures will be a brief one.

Additionally, the people of Perplex City can rest assured that we will continue our efforts to locate the Receda Cube and keep it secure in the hopes that a physical gateway between Earth and Perplex City may someday be established, in spite of Mr. Earlywine's attitude towards the people of Earth.

And when that day comes, we sincerely hope that the representatives of Earth and the representatives of Perplex City will meet with good will towards all and malice towards none.

Sincerely yours,

EARLYWINE RESPONDS

To the people of Earth:

I fear that you have been left with a skewed perspective of many of the events in Perplex City that have led to our current political and cultural climate. I take pen today, personally, to disabuse you of some of your more mistaken notions.

First, I should perhaps apologise for the baser statements I have made regarding Earth. In the heat of a political campaign, we sometimes use strong words out of frustration and anger. As you rightly point out, many on Earth have demonstrated a true nobility in spirit for coming forth to aid our city in our efforts to recover the Receda Cube. I am grateful, as are all of the people of my city.

I should point out, however, that though you did recover the data link in its secondary San Francisco location; if security for the original link or activation of the secondary link had been handled correctly by the Academy, no such thing would have been necessary. And if the Academy had held the Cube in a sufficiently secure situation, it would still reside on its plinth in the Academy Museum today, and none of you would know that Perplex City even exists.

It is true that I have grave reservations about the ongoing popularity of Earth and its many cultures. This is no indication that Earth should not itself take pride in its great works and accomplishments, for they are many and varied. Still, Perplex City is an older and more mature culture, and has long since moved on from the terrain that the Earth now walks. You are learning lessons now that we have surpassed. Continued admiration for the strife and warfare of the Earth brings us the risk that we may fall backwards in history to a dark and shameful time. Perplex City has emerged from that time the wiser for it, and it does not become us to forget this. Surely your own cities would feel the same if your children became enamoured of another place, forsaking your own heritage?

As you so astutely observed, we do rely on you to aid us in finding the lost Receda Cube. It is a poor reflection on us if we display anything but gratitude for this generosity your people have shown us. As a sign of goodwill, the Perplex City Sentinel will be resuming its Earth Edition; and in the spirit of greater understanding and continued co-operation between our peoples, allow me to lay out for you a series of facts that may change many of your opinions.

First: Your loyalty to the Master of the Academy, Sente Kiteway is a sentiment that does you credit; but blind loyalty is no virtue. In our preliminary investigation of the data link and its uses, we have already uncovered a large number of irregularities. Researchers at the Centre for Reality Research have misappropriated the link to acquire shoe designs. Sente Kiteway himself has improperly allowed his daughters significant time with the link for spurious reasons. These are but the least of the accusations against him, and I am working to ensure that these and other matters are investigated, and justice done.

You see, direct access to the data link from Perplex City is not something that can be widely distributed, like electricity or water. The link is a very limited and expensive resource. It is funded by public monies, and the stewardship of these funds is a matter I take very seriously. Can we not all agree that public resources should not be used for the vanity and personal entertainment of a select few? And is it wrong, then, for me -- the duly elected Leader of the City Council of Perplex City -- to take measures to ensure that the data link is being used only for its intended purposes?

And again, this is but the surface of the charges against Master Kiteway. The most serious matter of all is one that you barely hint at in your own epistle. As you know, evidence has surfaced that my predecessor, Camryn Scott, and Master Kiteway together colluded to conduct dangerous and illegal research. These were decisions made behind closed doors and with no oversight nor public discussion.

You suggest, "We see the beginnings of a repressive state in what was once a free society." I completely agree that Perplex City was on that dangerous path, though not for the reasons you cite. I hope that with my election, we have been spared that grim fate. It may be true of Special Project 487 that its "potential benefits were ignored" and its "flaws were magnified and twisted out of proportion." But this is not a judgement to be made in secrecy. Matters of such grave import should be subject to free and open debate. The bedrock of a free and open society is, indeed, open access to information -- in particular that pertaining to its leaders and their actions. For in Perplex City, we believe that even our leaders are subject to the same standards of law and ethics that bind all of our citizens.

Investigation into these grave allegations continues even now, and I expect it will be a long and arduous road before the truth is revealed. But open your hearts and minds to understand that the truth may be far less clean and clear-cut than you had been led to believe. Now and into the future, I hope that we can work together to recover the Receda Cube.
Nathan Earlywine, City Council Leader

I would be offended by Brewster's Leaderboard article if it wasn't so funny.

Yep well done all! Even if it didn't achieve any political objective, at least it got our Sentinel updates back (although it now reads like Earlywine's propaganda machine.)

Drat! I knew I'd forget something. I was just so excited about having a Sentinel update Laughing

So, we've got the Sentinel (and the lovely Madame Bianca) back, so people can stop pining Very Happy . Now we just need to sift through all the spin that is bound to be filling every article.

It kinda reminds me of what happened to ISN in the Babylon 5 "Dark Earth/War to Retake Earth" storyarc - they, too, were taken over by the government and used to spread anti-alien and anti-B5 propaganda. It started slowly too - at first mainly political puffery portraying the then-current administration as shining examples of good Galactic citizens and downplaying any had the various alien races may have had.

After a while, though, it got much darker, much more xenophobic, and extremely "The only good alien is a dead alien!"

Although, judging by Earlywine's response to the open letter - and indeed, the fact that he responded (I half expected him to blow it off, really!) - it doesn't seem likely that that's what we'll see with the Sentinel . . . still, best to keep our eyes on things.

Brewsters tone on her article was just slightly patronizing. Rolling Eyes I hope that this article was just a one off in establishing the Sentinels pro-PXC stance.

Of course it was funny too, bit worrying if they know what answers we've been inputting as well! Embarassed

Oh, and there's a picture on the front page that I don't remember seeing before (someone will probably tell me it's been there for months, but hey):

Looks to me like one of those jingoistic bumper stickers you see all over the United States. Between this and the Brewster piece, it looks like the Sentinel is trying awfully hard to appease Earlywine.

How is it that Brewster has access to the the answers? Scores are obviously public, but being able to see who-guessed-what would require a certain clearance within the CRT would it not?

In the same vein as "Freedom Fries" I'm expecting everything with the prefix "earth" to be replaced with a prefix "earlywine" (such as "earthenware" to "earlywineware" and "earthly delights" to "earlywinely delights" *shudders*)
