ARG Netcast, Episode 4
by Jonathan Waite
Episode 4 of the ARG Netcast contains more of the same tantalizing discussion that you've grown accustomed to over the past few weeks. Regular panel members Sean C. Stacey of unfiction, Brooke Thompson of Giant Mice and ARGNet's Jonathan Waite are joined by special guest Steve Peters of 42 Entertainment. Subscribe to the ARG Netcast feed through FeedBurner or via iTunes.
Topics of Discussion
With our special guest joining us, we grill Steve Peters about his move to professional puppetmastery, and get his thoughts on the directions that we might see ARG move towards in the near future.
Elan Lee, another 42 Entertainment alum, gave a speech at the Montreal International Gaming Summit this past week (our own Carie Ward broke the story here), and our panel looks at some of the things he said.
Game News
Ocular Effect -- new email suggests closure while maintaining sliver of hope for continuance.
The Human Pet -- As reported earlier this week by Brooke Thompson, new developments have YouTube pulling the plug on the videos, citing TOS violations.
Deus City -- Game launches with fun, mysterious video. Looks like a good one to get into early on.
Free! Psychic Readings -- We have in-depth coverage thanks to Sean and players Sylvia and Ruuku.
Ny Takma has new puzzles to solve which could be extremely important in figuring out just who Kendra really is.
Sammeeeees has another trivia night and another character death.
Descry (from the Studio Cyphers group) is released and includes a Flash-based seance... thingy. Another recent launch which looks to be fun to get into.
Game News
There's a Rhombicosidodecahedron to be solved. See this thread at the unfiction forums for current developments.
Listener Mail
Rose thinks we're offering a good resource for people who don't regularly read discussion forums.
Caspian wants to know more about ARG business models, and notes that we still need more game experts. ARGNet Nation, we're counting on you!
Shameless Plugs
Thoughts from the head of Steve Peters can be found at mysdirection. Be prepared to waste time there.
Sean has a new article up at unfiction, a must read in our opinion.

Keep your eyes peeled at ARGn too, now we're on the "Now Playing" list they're writing a article on it, and as far as I know, Pheadra asked me and Sylvia some questions which she'll quote us on, thus getting us more ego! (Hehe)

How Tacky Does It Get Today I read the article that Ruuku and I were asked to comment on. However, I am very disappointed with what was said and since I can't post a comment on argn.com I will post what I have to say here for everyone to see. This is the comment I was going to post:
Quote:
Personally, I think it was very tacky on your part and ARGnet's also to give away the end of the game and the PM's secrets the way you did. Not to mention exposing the PM before he was ready. Hopefully, what you have done will not spoil the rest of the game for the players.
I also think it was very tacky of you to contact me and Ruuku with the same exact questions and without informing the other that you had done so.
I will probably catch a lot of flack over this but so be it.
I WILL NOT be a part of any future articles you write nor ARGnet if this is the way you guys go about doing business.
And Eric if you are reading this, you did an excellent job.

Whereas I get the completely out-of-date Thank You For Commenting page after I hit Submit. Weird.
Edit: This is now fixed.
That being said, the comment still shows up in the ARGNet backend.

First of all, I have no idea what the ARGnet backend is and I'm sure there are some others who don't know either. So, please enlighten us.

Um. Hmm. The backend ... Well, ARGNet is published using Movable Type publishing software. We have installed features in that software to enable commenting on articles, but only for a limited amount of time, and only on approval by TPTB. So, when John or Jane Doe fills in a comment and submits it (and, hopefully, doesn't receive an error message, as you have stated happened to you) we see the comment in our administration section and then have the choice on whether to publish it or not. This eliminates comments full of spam or bad language.
I hope you feel enlightened by this.

Yes that indeed cleared a few things up. So basically, backend means censorship, which is fine for comments that are spam or contain bad language as you say. But as I feel that my comment contained neither, then I'm left with the conclusion that since you say it showed up on the backend that TPTB withheld it from the public or deleted it. I think that's referred to as CYA (cover your ass).
