mee too, just reading through the site, sniffing for any clues already..

First thoughts: sounds veeery promising, hope we get to play with RUMI

PS Gabriel & Raphael are both Angel's names... if this is anything to do with the angelic wars I'll be stoked!

EDIT: In the SC Forums Will states: "The new case starts today! There'll be about a week of pre-game (the game will be sedate during this period, but there will be stuff happpening) and then the game starts in earnest."

and the Forums have been upgraded too.

Hi all,

First time doing this, I've been aware of ARG games (although never heard of the term) and I played the ones that only got you talking on an instant messenger that they designed.

I thought I'd go up a notch, and try this out.

Any tips/advice for a newbie would be greatly appreciated.

I'm so new in fact, I'm having trouble getting past the fact that it's not real.

I love this kind of stuff Very Happy

Cheers,

Olly.

Woot! I'm not the only newbie in this!

*high-fives Olly*

Anyway, I'm wondering why you need to pay. Do they send you something?

This'll be fun...

I'm in too. (Been in since the first case - Out in the Cold.)

Dav: You don't *have* to pay to play, but the people who do get a few perks, such as first crack at the various puzzles and physical items.

In the first case - Out In The Cold - there were two.

The first was a postcard from a missing field agent. These led us to a webpage that indicated that said field agent was dead and had arranged that these postcards should be dispatched in the event of his death. The webpage also provided us with some information which turned out to be useful in solving the case.

The secont OITC item was a hexagonal terra-cotta tablet, which had a mysterious symbol etched on it. This (or at least the symbol) turned out to be what was needed for a series of rituals designed to trap a malicious doppelganger.

In the second case - Perfect Friends Forever - it was a copy of someone's rather unusual will (which, apparently, has a puzzle in it somewhere regarding the will-writer's fortune - has anyone been able to solve the puzzle yet?). On the back of the will, there was information regarding an antiques store - and the owner of said store turned out to have some information we needed to solve that case.

It's good to see I'm not the only newbie in this as well Cool

I only found out about ARG's a couple of days ago, well, I knew they existed but I didn't know the proper name for them and I didn't really think about it.

On Saturday, I went onto the Doctor Who fake website, whoisdoctorwho.co.uk and played a game which got me to talk to a bot on a created instant messenger where it got me to go to different websites looking for stuff.

Then, out of curiosity, tried looking for more on google and came up with ARG and that's how I found this.

Well, I did play one a year back or so. It was that game promoting Alias on the ABC website (which seems to be gone now, anyone know why?) but I didn't really think about looking for more then.

By the way, I've seen people making teams together to help each other out through games like this.

Will a team be forming for this one?

If so, I'd very much like to join it if possible since I don't want to be stuck in the dark on my own Sad Razz

Also, one of the annoying things is that every ARG I've seen before this one has already started and games like this doesn't seem right to start halfway through.

How do people find ARG games?

Like the Halo 2 promotion, ilovebees.com.

I've never seen things on websites promoting the games.

And, I'm really annoyed that I missed the 'Lost Experience' since I love that program, and I won't be able to find out the story line for it. (As far as my querying goes I believe it's about the group behind the Dharma Initiative, the Hanso Foundation(?)

The reason I missed out on it was because I did the naughties and downloaded the episodes, of course I deleted them after and bought the DVD's but it's because at first I didn't like the program. I finally started getting into it when Season 2 came out, so I tried to catch up by downloading Season 1, but by the time I watched it all Season 2 had ended. Crying or Very sad

Cheers!

PS. Sorry for the long post, I'm quite bored and doing a Shakespeare essay isn't exactly the highlight of my year.

Hola Olly

Welcome aboard, as far as teams go we're all one big happy team (OK we have the occasional <cough> debate, but we're all pretty cool on here) The spirit of past SC cases has very much been working together to achieve the goal. You can read up about the past cases on here, and to a lesser degree on the SC forums (most of the chat, coordination, idea sharing etc has been in unf).

To catch new ARGs, your best bet is a regular check of the News & Rumors section, also for the Lost Experience there's a load of stuff in the Archive.

EDIT: Macavity, no one has solved the will yet, I'm hoping we might get a clue from SC at some point, but I tried some fishing and got nothing useful.

Question: I've just been reading through the 'Studio Cypher: Game Overview' and what made me wonder is this,
"At 3pm on the dot, you show up in the park and look for the contact that Garith described in his email. Sure enough, there's a man in a trench coat holding an incongruously cheerful red balloon. You walk over and tell him that you're there for Garith. He looks at you suspiciously and then hands you an envelope before walking off. Good job! You've just participated in your first live event (and received your first artifact)!"

I'm going to assume that Studio Cypher is in the US, how could they possibly arrange something like that for people in the UK? or France? Or Belgium? or wherever!

Or is this a, 'If you're not in the US, you get none of the good stuff' thing?

Olly: That's just an example - so far, most of the artifacts have come through the mail. (There were a few instances in OITC where information we needed was hidden somewhere, such as under a garbage can in a park or - in one case - on a CD hidden between two books in a library.)

It's early days yet, so the events in each case aren't nearly as complex as they have been in other ARGs (such as Art of the H3ist, Perplex City, or I Love Bees). I'm sure that as SC grows, they'll expand their activities.

Hello

Hello All,
Another Newbie, Greenhorn, absolute beginner in your midst. Very Happy
You can tell by the size of the post I suppose...

And if anything taking the international aspect of the whole thing to a new level as I just signed up to the game from Greece. I paid an extra 4USD (due to being overseas) but I'm not sure it will make up their costs if they mail whatever physical item over here Smile (and I know I'll be curious to receive it).
My only past experience has been lurking through some parts of the Lost Experience although I've been reading up on a lot of ARG theory lately and my work in Greece touches upon projects similar to ARG's.

I'm really interested in the Studio Cypher method as it seems to be less chaotic -if less pure to the eyes of some I suppose. They also seem to be learning from each episode -at least as far as I can judge from the self critical analysis they wind their games up with- so I'm optimistic about the experience.
BTW does anyone know on average how many players actually participated in their last two games? Any estimates? How many actually paid up? I'm quite curious as I think that this is an important measure of the ARG phenomenon.

Also one other question: There seem to be events -mails to arrive at certain times, rituals, critical points at any rate in which certain actions by players influence events in the game. I've heard of players "not getting the ritual down correctly" or whatever. How does this work? and more to the point,
How does this work in studiocypher's games?
Is this a case of everyone participating and if anyone gets it right then the storyline goes one way ? or is it consensus? or somebody gets to represent the player community? or what?

Sorry to preempt anybody but I'd rather raise my game mechanics questions in a point of order pre-game fashion rather than irritate people in the game.

Glad to be here and I hope everyone enjoys the game.

I, too, am rather new to ARGs. I figured this is as good as any to start with and there's the added bonus of surprises through the mail.

Any suggestions from the veterans on things specific to Studio Cypher?
