Chat & forums - sharing the good stuff

[ed: I've split this off from the Unfiction Java Chat thread to a place a bit better for this discussion. To see some of the background, including Sylvia's original post, head over there. If you have questions or problems with the uF java chat, head over there. If you want to discuss issues about how to best share info between chat & forums and whatnot, use this thread. - imbri]

I don't know, but I found that when I have troubles usually changing the port number will do the trick.

Back to my original post, I didn't mean for it to sound like i guess it sounded and yea, with hindsight, irrelevant was probably a bad choice of words. And yes skimming through the chatter might be easy if you follow the thread constantly but when you are playing catch-up and your time is limited it's a nightmare.

But to let people know what, to me personally, chat means. Back when i started arging, I think in April, the first arg i played from beginning to end was CTW2 and players were posting stuff like, "we discussed this in chat and came up with this ..." I was feeling so left out. So, I wanted to get in chat too. So, I set out to find out how to get in there and once I did I've been happy ever since. I no longer feel left out and actually get in on some of the solves as they are happening. I also found out that a lot of people won't post there specs on the forums because they think it might sound silly or something but when they ask in chat something like, "what about this..." and we go something like, "wow, that sounds good, post it for others to see," they feel less hesitant about posting there opinion.

I just didn't want other players to feel left out like I did and I just wanted to help new players to understand the "hows and what fores" asap.

On a side note, I have been surfing the web since 1992 but shied away from chats until i started arging. The people you meet in these chats are good people so there is nothing to fear. I have made a lot of friends on chat. Friends I love and glad to have met. I don't think i could have developed that type of relationship by using the forums alone. Before I was always afraid of chatting because of all the negative publicity about them but now I know it's not chatting in general it just depends on who and what you are chatting with/about. All i know is, if you are determined to get involved in the chats, as i was, you will find a way, like i did.

And for those of you who want a room to discuss possible args from news and rumors in, I will keep #F!PR! open a little longer. And since Free! Psychic Readings has ended the room is now known as Flapper! for Pregames and Rumors! or something like that. So, feel free to use it.

First, not to be rude, but I had a hard time following that entire ramble.

Well, since this is a place for 'strictly gaming' according to you, do personal feelings really matter here? Again, I don't want to sound as though I am attacking you but basically this entire post is on you filling us in on your thoughts and feelings - and based on what you said earlier this shouldn't be done...

I will agree completely with you on this point. Simply because I've been here long enough to see too many people that are new to the genre or are just excited about a launch/game they've found and want to get involved. I will say it (and get landblasted for doing so) that uF isn't the friendliest of places, but it is the most well known - that is why I am still here. I have felt extremely bad for some people that have posted and have been what I see as publically landblasted by some of the moderators here... With that being said, I do appreciate the time and effort that is put in to running this site. I know it can't be an easy feat. Condescention does seem to run rampant around here though.

I can understand, and I have a good feel for how it works around here - that is why I simply PM someone who might have questions or not know how it 'is' here - I don't need to post. Much like your talk about cluttering up the forums with idle chatter. I've read posts much like yours several times.

There is a difference in getting 'involved with the chats' and feeling like you own a room. I love a good forum, I love a good chat - but I do not like to feel like I am being babysat by someone who just happened to beat me into setting up a room. Like you, I have met some great people via the forums and chat - but typically when a chatroom becomes so weighed down by rules we start our own, so we can be free to do what we came for - which is CHAT. That leads to brainstorming, free thinking and ultimately being more 'in the know' than in a room with bots, moderators and feeling like we're being babysat. I like to think that the people I am interacting with online are adults and are treated with respect from the start, unless they give me a reason to act otherwise.

With that being said, uF is a great place for people who enjoy ARG'ing - it is the best out there. I try my best to respect the rules, and feel that I've been around long enough to learn and abide by them. I do that, but also feel that I have the right to express my opinion as do the rest of the members here. I mean no disrespect to anyone, but when others are allowed to express their opinions, I feel it is only fair for everyone to be allowed the same.

Okay, how did this thread for technical information about the IRC Java Applet turn into...this?

Can we please just play nice?

Everyone is pretty. Chat is good, but it is also nice to keep people on the forum informed of what happens there. Technical information on how to use the Unfiction chat applet can be found in this resource thread.

Have I missed anything essential to getting into the chat rooms in those past two sentences?

If not, may I suggest that discussion of the ins and outs and characteristics of various chat rooms, and the appropriateness of various types of discussions to chat vs. the forums belongs in the META section, and not in this thread, which is intended to be a resource thread?
