Research books or websites for codebreaking/puzzle solving

I suspect that most people glean their puzzle-solving abilities from multiple sources--I have a very few under my own belt--but I was wondering if there are suggestions for anything beyond the general puzzle-solving page here on unfiction that anyone could suggest to polish one's skills?

I apologize if this information is already posted somewhere--I did do a few searches but somehow managed to miss anything beyond the tutorials.

Thank you.

There are plenty of books out there on cryptography, but really the best and most painless way to learn (IMHO) is to solve puzzles in a communal setting (like playing a puzzle trail, or an puzzle-intensive ARG). Practice helps, and instead of learning from a single author you're learning from a group of people, each with different approaches and ways of thinking about it.

Thank you. I guess I'll just have to get cracking on those ARGs then!

While partly agreeing, this does not always work the way you'd want it to. In my experience, it's not too helpful to see a puzzle solved before your eyes by a group of people, who, after solving it, state that "it was plain and simple Vigenere" and brush it off as terribly easy Smile

In addition of being part of an ARG-solving team, if you want a bright, readable and (imho) pretty compelling introduction to cryptography, both it's history and the different techniques used, I can more than recommend reading Simon Singh's The Code Book, which is a really excellent read.
