Email Phyllis, Barbecue and Dreams

Dear Sunny One,
I meant to write to you last night; I really did. But, when I got home I was suddenly so tired. The gathering at the Dobbs' was very stimulating and I guess it took more out of me than I realized. I now know what it feels like to be a celebrity. Standing by Iris, we were constantly engaged by a swirl of people being overly-friendly, telling stories of the activity in their homes, and asking outlandish questions. Wes arrived with Sam Greene. Does Sam know about your group? It would seem he does. There were so many people pressing around us it was difficult to have any meaningful dialogue about our joint quest. I did whisper to Wes, "I'm part of the helper group now." He reacted with this exaggerated look of surprise, put a finger to his lips and said, "Shhhh, speak little, listen much." I couldn't help laughing at him. He acts like such a clown but methinks he has great depths and uses this behavior to protect himself.

As the gathering broke up, we were besieged by people inviting us to their homes for an after-party party. Well, they were asking Iris, of course, but being polite they included me. She declined, saying she had work to do. As we walked away from the hubbub she told me one of you had sent her a copy of my dream about Douglas' office. We discussed how we could go about investigating the validity of this vision without alerting Douglas. I mean, now that we all suspect he is in league with dark forces, it wouldn't do if he discovered evidence of our having pried up the floorboards, would it?

When I returned home, I called out for Douglas and even went up to his office and the guest room looking for him but there was no sign that he had returned home. I then had to have one more look at the studio in case the images had returned. The phone rang and startled me because it was past ten. It was Iris saying she had gotten emails from some of you who were afraid for me and thought our being away from the house meant someone might have used the opportunity to break in. (I found such warnings in my in-box this morning, too.) After her call, I went back to Douglas' office and even pulled up the edge of the rug in the front of the closet to see if the floorboards showed signs of tampering. I then engaged in a room by room search and everything appeared to be as it should. I called Iris back to tell her everything was all right.

By then the fatigue was bearing down on me and I thought I would just have a little lie-down on the parlor sofa before trudging upstairs for the night. I was thinking about A's and what kind of word might begin with Alec when I fell into a fitful sleep fraught with snippets of dreams:

A bedraggled figure wandering through the Pine Barrens, skirting the edges of the Bogs, tired, dirty, hungry, carrying a bag. My perspective zooms in and I see it is Sarah as I last knew her – a homeless waif.

Douglas standing in a small room. My view is from behind him and his body blocks my view of someone sitting at a desk in front of him. That someone is yelling, scolding, very harsh and demeaning. Douglas was supposed to watch someone, do something and failed in his task.

Sarah, battered as before, dragging her bag behind her, approaching the old library building. She is looking around furtively as though pursued. She leans against the side wall, pressing her face against the old bricks and whispers, "I know you are here. I can feel you. I need your help. Can you hear
me?"

Then, I dreamt I had awoken and a DEG was standing beside my feet at the end of the sofa. This startled me truly awake and there was Douglas leaning over me! I let out a gasp and I'm sure fear showed on my face. I tried to cover myself, actually telling the truth, and sputtered, "I had a nightmare."

He looked me in the eye in a way he has not done in weeks and said, "Don't be afraid of me. You're my wife. I won't hurt you." Then, he pulled me up in an awkward embrace and led me up the stairs to my bed. I was so groggy and still so tired, I dared not say another word. When he laid me on my bed, I was instantly asleep and had no more dreams.

How extremely untidy and disconcerting it is to wake up with your day clothes on! Douglas is still snoring away in the guest room. I feel a bit out of sorts this morning but refreshed and ready for the day's adventures. I am going to try to answer some more emails before we all set out on our excursion into the wilds. But, there are so many and I don't know what to say to some of them so I will do my best and eventually everyone should have a reply.

I have no idea how long we shall be gone today but I will report as soon as I
am able.

Love,
Phyllis
