It was stupid and mean-spirited, IMO.

 PM Chat

You could have got the exact location of Santa, but due to a clue being over-looked you lost. I always ran the game with the intention of you winning, but I could not have you win if you lost...things don't work that way.

There will be a PM Chat for this game to explain where you went wrong, and to go through it all with you in #notsomerry tomorrow night, 29th December, at 5pm EST.
Thanks.

I will try my best to be here for the PM as I'm very curious what was missed but there's a very good chance I'll be having dinner with family at that time. Any chance of the log of the chat being posted here.
Thanks
Michelle

<PM> is that the thingy...i think i know.

<PM> ahh yes.
<PM> Reindeer Games? No.
<catherwork> and if it gets chaotic, Phaedra can +m the room and give only 1 person at a time the +voice

<PM> Ahh I see. Haha, no problemo.
<PM> You guys are great! Very Happy

<catherwork> i failed to follow either game to the end

<catherwork> i would just half-op the PM so the name stands out, but this applet doesn't let me?
<PM> Doesnt matter Very Happy
<PM> Shall we start people?
<catherwork> small crowd, maybe not the most convenient day/time
<PM> Yeah, I could only do this time. :/
<PM> But, if you ask questions...if you can think of any...and I explain about the game it could be posted in the thread.
<catherwork> can someone log the chat? I can't from here
<PM> The main thing I need to do is point out why the players lost.
<catherwork> i'm sure the biggest question is about the puzzle that went wrong?
<PM> Yes.
<Phaedra> I'll log -- I'm assuming it'll last less than an hour
<PM> Haha, I think thats a safe assumption.
<PM> Right...I shall start with where it went wrong.
<PM> The main problem was that players missed a code, which was posted by blaqueice, in the post before paneralized stuck the second code out there.
<PM> no one seemed to solve that code, which would have led them to Hancock Tower.
*** JohnLockeGuy [lurker@chat-solu-AA0EC09F.res-cmts.mlf.ptd.net] has joined #notsomerry
<PM> I had to release the second code, because it was Xmas Eve and the game needed a conclusion.
<PM> Hello.
<JohnLockeGuy> hey
<JohnLockeGuy> ...hello everyone
<PM> That is where it went wrong. Another factor in the downfall was that only one player added me, who was online regularly, and he didn't communicate everything that was important to the other players.
<JohnLockeGuy> Dontcha hate it when that happens?
<PM> Maybe that is because it was close to Xmas. But the game was just a small bit of Xmas fun. Nothing heavy.
<catherwork> ok, 2 questions from that
<PM> I do hate it when it happens.
<PM> Sure thing.
<JohnLockeGuy> I think if you had launched the game with more than two days until Xmas, things would've turned out better
<catherwork> err, was it supposed to be an instant message kind of game? was there not another channel for letting info flow?
<catherwork> and, couldn't you inject a further hint that something was still unsolved, while releasing the next code?
* catherwork is asking in the dark, having not seen either code herself
<lurker239> *nods* added you to what exactly?
<PM> I tried to communicate it over mIRC, that really didn't take off. I could have released it earlier - though I didn't know I was going to do the game until 3 days before Xmas.
<catherwork> was it AIM? not everyone runs that
<JohnLockeGuy> i think it was MSN
<JohnLockeGuy> am i right?
<PM> MSN. yes.
<JohnLockeGuy> yeah
<JohnLockeGuy> even less people have that than AIM
<catherwork> i registered for MSN but rarely run it myself
<JohnLockeGuy> I think what catherwork meant, though, is maybe you could've given the characters a blog to release codes
<JohnLockeGuy> or something
<PM> The main problem, is that I trusted the players would solve the code, but they didn't so I had to give them the 'lose' ending on Xmas eve to round off the game.
<catherwork> well, not if it was intended to be an IM kind of game, without websites
<catherwork> could you tell how many players were following along soley thru the forums?
<catherwork> yeah, two days is tough for people who only play on days off work -- and holiday time off is sacred
<PM> I could, but I thought the IM would be fastest, and get players more involved.
<PM> There were four or five players I would say. More lurkers too.
<JohnLockeGuy> yeah, I lurked
<catherwork> i'm not sure why i didn't join in, probably the scenario didn't sound like a fun puzzle trail
<PM> I realise holiday time is sacred, but I thought a bit of light Xmas fun in ARG form would be nice.
<PM> Yes.
<catherwork> but I might have helped with the code had i known
<lurker239> I have to to do my profile so people know how to get a hold of me
*** JohnLockeGuy [lurker@chat-solu-AA0EC09F.res-cmts.mlf.ptd.net] has quit [Quit: http://unfiction.com/chat/]
<PM> Well. It is true I could have planned it earlier, and timed it better...but I just wanted an easy bit of holiday fun. Thats what it was, and what it was intended as.
<PM> I didnt want Santa to die. Razz
<lurker239> It was a nice opportunity for a newbie like me to get her feet wet though numerical code breaking is not my strong point. I jumped right in once we had the riddle though
<catherwork> any thoughts about why using the threatening story instead of just a straight puzzle trail?
<PM> I thought it would liven it up a bit. I like the drama.
<PM> Don't worry...I'm not good with codes either! Very Happy
<lurker239> i'm a triva/riddle nerd and a roleplayer
<PM> Me too!
<PM> I'm an actor by trade. I'm a general knowledge kinda guy.
<PM> I'm get confuzzled when trying to do codes.
<PM> If that is all? Thank you! Very Happy
<lurker239> i stumbled across arging with the lost thing this summer and started fishing. when i came across the criticism of that one I thought "if this is a bad one can't wait for a good one'
*** catherwork left #notsomerry []
<PM> There are some amazing ones in progress. One or two are on hold right now...as I speak
<PM> Good luck in your future ARGing!
<lurker239> i'm looking at geist but i'm worried about rl sucking me away mid game..i'm a grad student currently on break
<PM> Well...I'm not really into any games at the moment...dont have time. Plus I like writing content for ARGs and stuff like that.
<Phaedra> are we don?
<lurker239> school is like a vortex with no escape

Evil or Very Mad

If that refers to me, I'll post the convo here. I fail to see how I ruined the game, though.

No it was not you.
I mean the problem was that only one player added me, who was online regularly, so if he had communicated something wrong to the other players there would be no one else to compare it with what they were told by the character.
It's small details that need to be communicated, such as deadlines.

It's the PM's responsibility to get the necessary info out, not the players. If that player did not do what you expected to, then you should have gotten the info out via other means.

I know, PMs have a responsibility to do that, but players also have to do something too.
There was no other 'believable' means to get that information across. I realise that it is ultimately my fault, as I made the game. I now have to go to the arctic circle for a few years, bye.

Actually, they really don't.

If players have any obligation, it's merely to not do things far outside the bounds of etiquette, like, for example, hacking your site.

They don't have any obligation to pass on information, interact with any character, etc. Which is why it's important to have multiple means of getting important information out.

You can't count on people behaving in any particular way, especially when your player base is small.
