Yeah so umm...

It'd be nice if this had its own forum so that we could seperate each of the various puzzles and specs on them

Only my opinion which doesn't account for much Twisted Evil

If you don't have a Chat applet, just go to http://www.unfiction.com/chat/
Then choose your nickname, and type in #vanishing under the Channel box. Then hit the arrow pointing to the circle on the bottom, and boom, you're there! If you have problems with that, discuss them here

brad soup, come join us for spec in chat, it's fun. We generally try to keep the forums more focused. It makes it easier for people to get up to speed if they don't have to read through pages of us throwing ideas around.

So.. we should definetly see if an UN forum admin will create a forum for this.. and subforums for each key possibly. It'd be be easier to read all the info, because each topic generally has it's own subject.

I did a google search for lokivanishes hoping to find a blog. But, noo.
Instead, there were three other forum sites where a lokivanishes registered.
DigitalMediaThoughts.com , HardwareGeeks.com, and osnn.net. She has zero posts on them.
All were registered on December 20th, the same day she registered on Neowin.
This does nothing to advance our story, but it's interesting.

eta: A flickr search reveals this http://flickr.com/search/people/?q=lokivanishes
Also nothing there, but the account was opened 1 week ago, Dec. 20th. hmm
eta2: (Click on "member since" to see date joined.)

eta3: Something else registered 1 week ago, but with no content... http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=lokivanishes

These may or may not be used in game. They may have been registered by 42 just to keep anyone else from using the name.

Just a few things to keep an eye on.

Has anyone followed-up on these? I see on this blog where "Michael" from hardwaregeeks.com has stated that s/he got a machine, but don't see any info on a key having been received."I recieved the Velocity Micro Machine from AMD and Microsoft."

It seems they're releasing the pages as they've been confirmed as found for acquisition in a Google search. That or we've found all there is to find. Also, it looks like they may be working on doing the event countdown timers based on server time instead of client time, at some point in the future.

New threads

Just to let you guys know - I've made a thread for the live events where people going to those can coordinate their meet-ups, etc. (all the previous posts on that subject are now there).

ETA: for that matter, there is now a separate thread for all the "ultimate prize" and "someone is going to space!!OMGWTFBBQ!11!!1!!!!" and MS Vista spec too.

Stop whining for a new sub forum if the admins created a sub forum for every arg that gained a ton of speculation and dare I say spam the board would be thrown into chaos. Currently we don't deserve a sub forum because this thing isn't nearly big enough for it and one shouldn't be rewarded just because some people wish to post uselessly on the original thread. This whole puzzle doesn't even meet a true arg classification yet. I'm not saying everyone should just quit speculating and everything, but there is a time and a place for it. The place is the unfiction chat room; the time is when this thing launches. for example if you post on this forum your little speculations and such someone will come on and probably tell you to either join the chat room or inform you that ur speculation has been suggested. if you join the chat room and say it someone will inform you then if your spec has been mentioned, or they will say hey HMMM that's a good idea, hey you know what look at this it fits your speculation.

A few late comments:

The language Loki uses to describe how famous we'll be - as many stars as-- no, as many grains of sand as there are on a beach - strongly evokes the same promise God makes to Abraham with regards to how many descendants he'll have. See Gen 15:5 or thereabouts. And in general, that kind of idiom recurs often in the Old Testament, esp. in Psalms. Which I think really only means that Loki is particularly arrogant, and this is flavor text.

Secondly, Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire is, obviously, about what it says it's about. The Histories of Herodotus (how I love them) are about the Persian Wars (check wikipedia, you want the Greco-Persian wars). The only relation I can really think of is the inevitable comparison of Rome to Greece, though the Greece in the Histories is one that is defeating its enemies and growing into a real power with Athens at the forefront.

It's a good book. [/random]

my first, last & only *intentionally* misplaced posting
off topic

blackhawk, I'm pretty sure that everything you say is true and accurate.
However, I am 100% certain that there are more polite ways of phrasing your pearls of wisdom.

Perhaps you could update the 'new players guidelines' thread to include such etiquttes - as there is currently no mention of what you just stated there - and that is the first thing that a diligent new forum user will read.

I have half a mind to point out that your tirades are just as off-topic and space wasting and serve no purpose other than to bully ignorant newbies such as myself, and to say that you have single-handedly given me the impression that new people are not welcome in this community.

but I won't, as that would be rude...

Despite my indignation, I SHALL heed you 'advice'; this is the last comment I will make in this thread until the game starts proper and I encourage all other newbies to join me in investigating the chatrooms. http://www.unfiction.com/chat/
Hopefully this rant will curtail all other off topic comments (including any potential responses to this post!)

Over and out.

Mink

A duplicate key?

A person by the name of "[f]" came into the IRC/Chat today.
They said they had received an envelope with a key, and provided us with all of this stuff:

http://blurg.wordpress.com/2007/01/03/vanishingpointgamecom-i-am-a-decoder/

There IS a new key. It says "Rot +4", while the first said "Rot -4".

If I am wrong in saying it's new, correct me please, but I think it is.

EDIT: Upon further discussion with people in the IRC, it seems that the deciphered code is.. old? Not sure which code it is exactly, but apparently it's the same as the first one..

But the first one has a "ROT Key" of -4.. while this new one has a +4 ROT Key.. so why the duplicate?

Might have something here..

Hey, I may have found something in that box..
As they say 'To decrypt, preform a Rot +4 on letters, throw out even #s, and keep the odd numbers same'.. I thought 'let's preform a Scofield'. I mean take the letters and turn them into numers, with yer cellphone... heh
- The Yellow cubes represent the letters/numbers on the other box.
- only take the yellow ones it gives:
34wget32
kvezz1x6
-After performing a Scofield i got:
34943832
58399196
- Throw out the even #s:
3933
539919
or placed like this: 3933 - 539919
-When you counter-scofield 'em:
3933 - 539919
- Now you get this:
dwdd - jdww!w
exee - kexx?x
fyff - lfyy;y
z - zz.z

Hope this will turn out like i wanted it to...lol, the corresponding letters have to be placed under the numbers.
Somehow i manage to see the words:
eyed - keyz!y
or something like that... could be something..lol
We need a key, so....

Except, the key decodes to: 3akix3ozidd1b

That gives you the same puzzle page as the 3scap3grav1ty.
