[OOG...Maybe] If It All Turned Too Real...

Perplex City is an ARG that oozes backstory. Every single story, character or otherwise has a rich background that lends itself well to works of fiction. The question i pose it this: What if it turned out to be real? A Cube was really stolen, harbouring unimaginable power, buried somewhere on Earth? And there really is a race against a shadowy Third Power to find it, and players, top players, start to drop like flies in cold blood?

Would you continue to risk your life? Or back away from the danger to save yourself? And what about other parties besides 'them' and 'us?' Would an unscrupulous dictator send his minions in his security forces to find it?

This lends itself well to works of fiction, don't you think?

Ah go on, play along

I would, no hesitation, continue risking my life for it.

If it was real, I feel I've become too emotionally attached to the people of Perplex City, and everything that's going on.

So if it turned out to be real, it would give me a chance to devote my life to it, and I would.

The other logic that you could interpret from that is "Meh, I've got nothing left, might as well risk my life," which would be mostly true as well.

In fact, if it were true, I would devote a lot more time to it than I do at present. Because I would desperately want to get involved with everything, rather than the 'passing curio' of sitting and waiting for updates. It would be a world that I would *WANT* to get involved in.

In my opinion, you can only devote so much time to a game. It's not possible, for many people, to completely devote every minute of your life to the welfare of a character in a game. But if it was real.. it would be a LOT easier to devote time to the people.

I suppose that's why I have a fascination with ARGs, breaking down the fourth wall of gaming, actively communicating with players, and getting response, changing the game based on user input. And the possibility, even the slightest slimmest possibility that it could be true, I desperately want that. A world that I *WANT* to be involved with.

But now I'm rambling and getting repetitive. So I'll shut up.

(I shall muse more upon ARGs in my blog, probably.)

Interesting proposition.

If people were to start dying fFor real, I would certainly be more intrigued, definitely. Chances are very good that people I (kinda) know and care fFor would be prime targets. And if people are getting killed, then that means there is something much larger to protect going on here, and there is a city which I am fFascinated in somewhere out there to get in touch with. The greater implications of all that aside ...

I think the spirit of your question comes fFrom one of a number of angles such as "What if Mind Candy were a global crime syndicate disguising their deeds in clever puzzles and games, and they personally want their own stolen goods to be returned by any means necessary?" or "What if Mind Candy were a super-team of crime fFighting vigilante puzzle scribes who are fFighting a global war of espionage with another party known only as The Third Power, and while they put on a good fFace publicly, every day is a matter of life and death?" or "What if Mind Candy were a pack of innocent bystanders, and an organization of unknown origin has lured them into a surprisingly effective business model, which just so happens to be a grandiose cover-up fFor a nefarious villain's plans?"

And in these contexts, I'm not sure what I would do. I want to say "I'm with you!!!" but when bodies start fFalling, we have to question: why am I risking my life? fFor the money? keep it!

I would be in it to save those who were up to their necks in evil. Yes my fFriends, you can count on me to watch your backs when the orbital railgun platform powers up.

I couldn't not risk myself for the people of Perplex City. We all have friends there, not to mention all that we can learn from them. They have the kind of culture that I would love to learn more about, and I like the mind-over-matter ideas that they all have. I would much rather have an "Intro to Puzzle Making" than Gym class.

I would invest as much of my time as I could to helping my friends in Perplex City. No question about it.
