ARGFest-O-Con IV NYC - A New Hope - www.argfestnyc.com

I'll assume this is the best place to put this, Mods can move it if necessary. Or sticky it if you like Smile

After much deliberation, it has been decided that ARGFest-O-Con IV will be held in New York City in July 2005. Woohoo!

For the time being we can assume it'll be the weekend July 22-24, I have yet to hear any objections to those dates.

Use this thread to coordinate travel plans, events, ask questions, make suggestions or recommendations, etc, etc. If you have a specific question/comment that you feel is not threadworthy, you can always PM rose, joebrent or myself. In the coming days I'll be posting some general info about The Big Apple, including a NYC Primer. There is a bewildering array of New York City attractions, and you can of course ask one of us natives and get the skinny.

Yes, I realize it's 7 months away, but it's never too early to plan, especially for folks strapped on cash. Save those pennies!

Oh, and I'm not married to the title (see topic name), if anyone thinks up a better one, let me know so I know what to put on the t-shirts. Yes, I said t-shirts. Cool

p.s. An Honorable Mention goes to Chicago, who came in 2nd place in the poll. ARGFest V Chicago, anyone?

yay us

I am very happy that we will be gathering here in NYC!!!

A question: any interest in having a conference/META discussion of some kind while people are here? I know bagsbee has met some gaming community type people. I have met a few myself. Given enough lead time we could put something together if people are interested.

Does the weekend start on Friday? I hope some (most) people can stay longer.

It will be great if people post some things they would like to do.

I am still up for organizing some Halo2 tournaments, maybe we can do an extended live battle?

As requested in the other thread, I am checking on the summer hours of the main library at 42nd street..as I recall this was the home of an axon. And there is a great, but not cheap, outdoor restaurant there. Several inexpensive places to eat as well. Bryant Park(behind the library) is all spiffy and garden like now.

We have started our plans. And goddamnit, if the bastard that broke into my car this past week hadn't, we'd be $200 closer to NYC.

We. Are. Trying our very best to make sure that we are Coming.

/me may or may not have konashark in tow, but it's in my PDA and I'm getting myself to NYC!!!
I'm figuring to get in early Friday morning and stay at least until Monday night.

See - here is my flight if I was to book today with Jet Blue:
Regular Fare US$119.00 Thu, 21 Jul 05
Flight 196 11:00 pm Depart Las Vegas, NV (LAS)
6:55 am Arrive New York NY (JFK)(next day)

Regular Fare US$119.00 Mon, 25 Jul 05
Flight 195 7:25 pm Depart New York NY (JFK)
10:00 pm Arrive Las Vegas, NV (LAS)

However, I am not that interested in anything Halo2. Sign me up for sightseeing - I would like to play tourist (without looking like one) and see the Statue of Liberty, Ground Zero, Central Park, uhm....anything else you locals feel is important.

T-shirts? I like the theme picked for the topic. Seems fitting.
And in keeping with the previous namings.

You know. We've never had any official UF mascot, have we? But the logo for UF on the shirt would also be nice.

I'll figure out lodging when it gets closer (and I know if I get to bring a date).

Psshhht! Me? Embarassed by compliments? NEVER! I revel in them. I spread them on the ground and roll around in them, covering myself like a pig would in a pile of dookie, enjoying the smell and the luxurious smoothness and its positive effect on my complexion.

So, for someone who's never been to one, but is just pondering going, since NYC is a lovely place well worth the return to (I'm an expat New Yorker)... what goes on at these things?

Jake--it's Chinatown! Very Happy

Will there be a table where PMs can drop off flyers with trailheads and clues? How about a "Con-miniARG"?

ARGfest

What goes on at these things?

Whatever we feel like doing. We have suggestions which I think will work down to people choosing what they feel like doing and then meeting up for dinner/drinks, etc. I recall someone saying that trying to organize everyone who attends AGRfest is like herding cats....But we will definitely have some good planned events. Yankees (or Mets) game anyone? Halo2 tourney? Shakespeare in the Park? Bronx Zoo? Beer Gardens in Astoria?

One reason Bagsbee and I were pushing to have the location and time established is to give us time to plan properly. I have already located a place that serves a good brunch with unlimited mimosas and bloody mary's, for those interested in that sort of thing.

I look forward to bagsbee's primer on NYC (though I doubt he will have anything about my neighborhood in there). My tip for the Statue of Liberty-- get there really early. It gets crowded and you don't want to have to wait in line for it. You can get tickets in advance. But I will post more about that later. As for Ground Zero, that is still a tough one for me, but I have been there a bunch of times in the past few months so I definitely think I can make a trip there with anyone who wants to go. Somehow just looking at the ugly hole in the ground/construction site that is there doesn't really convey the story.

Now, a mini ARG, well, dang, do we need a curtain or not?[that is not a rhetorical question, but it requires a META answer so someone else can advise.] I would think it is safe to assume that some sort of puzzle/game or various combinations thereof, online and off will be in the offing....
