I don't think so; I think doublecross is right. There are five cards at the bottom before the disappearance, and six afterwards. The new card does happen to be a 3, but we're told that the key is "HOW MANY"
Edit: Except that evidently I am wrong, and it is an R after all.
You missed two cards that appear around the border of the rightmost picture of the guy who disappears
P.S. This is my first post here!

Look at a real map of Australia. Congrats, you have just discovered Van Diemen's Land, also known as Tasmania.

They did get it first ... that doesn't mean I didn't solve it as well. I'm about half an hour behind Neowin at times.

That tells you which event has the clue you need. But it's solved, so it doesn't matter now.

For the curious:
The event in LA had skywriting from planes, writing in the sky. Pictures of it are up on the vanishingpoint game site.
The puzzles have golden seals that indicate where the clue is coming from -but none seem to indicate Austin. It seems we will get those clues another way. The best info is that pouring rain (and cold weather) caused the event to be canceled.

As rose said, it's an intermediate step. We may have to wait until we get the pictures from Phoenix to know what to do with it.
Edit: Might as well post another intermediate step:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The semaphore from Headliner spells OPPOSITE
