Yeah, it's a tuff one. By the way, when entered into the answer box "Sabe Dancer" is actually spelled "Sabre Dance."

Worried about progression...

Ok folks, i'm a little worried about the progression of this puzzle.

If you've noticed, we didn't get a new news segment yesterday, though we've consistently gotten a new one every day since they started. Also, it seems like things have started to slow down, and every time i see a new post about the IG characters it seems to repeat the same information we already know.

Posting on the forums here is down as well.

I think, for the game to progress, we have to finish Audiophile first. We know at least four of them now, if not five or six, so we have to be close.

1. Vienna Blood, Strauss
2. Eine Klein Nachtmusik, Mozart
3. unknown, may be Beethovens 9th entitled "Ode to Joy"
4.?????
5. Les Toreadors, the prelude from Carmen, Bizet
6. Celebrated Minuet, Boccherini
7. Sabre Dance, Khachaturian

The people i've been talking with on the classical music forum have expressed inability to distinguish anything due to poor quality, so we're going to have to this on our own.

Unfortunately, morelaak, I suspect you may be right. Curse those vagrants and their poor whistling abilities Rolling Eyes .

Does anyone have sound equipment? you could upload the whistling into the system to figure out what the notes are. those could then be run against a large database of songs. That's the only thing i can think of. I only heard 5 songs and only knew one of them. If it were pop/rock music from 1950 forward i'd have figured it out by now. I want to know what the PMS were thinking when they decided to give us this terrible puzzle!

I'm glad somebody went back and checked my initial guesses. Even if we correctly identify all of the melodies, we still have to hit the exact phrasing of their "common names" to answer this one. So we'd better be sure about the melodies before we go looking for the accepted names.

At this point I totally agree with Vienna Blood (vs. The Blue Danube)...to be honest, I listened to so much classical music that I kinda lost my ability to tell one piece from the other - temporarily, I hope. Right now, it's all a big mush for me.

That said, I don't think I can agree with Beethoven's 9th for No. 3, especially not the Scherzo part.
Scherzos tend to be rather quick, light-hearted and playful ("Molto Vivace", as it is). I really don't think that's it...

For everybody who can't distinguish the segments from each other or who only hears five melodies, I've broken the mp3 down into the separate sections (as I hear them) and amplified them a bit. Also, it makes identification easier if you don't get distracted by the other tunes.

Morelaak, maybe you might want to repost these on the classical music forum?

Finally, here are the timecodes from the original audiophile.mp3. Hope this helps...

1. Vienna Blood, Strauss (0:00.00 - 0:08.69)
2. Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, Mozart (0:08.70 - 0:12.77)
3. ??? (0:12.78 - 0:18.68)
4. ??? (0:18.69 - 0:27.07)
5. Prelude from Carmen (Les Toreadors), Bizet (0:27.08 - 0:31.38)
6. Celebrated Minuet, Boccherini (0:31.39 - 0:35.43)
7. Sabre Dance, Khachaturian (0:35.44 - 0:42.71)

Yeah, how many people do YOU know that go around whistling classical music???!!!!

Part of my problem with number 3 is I hear too MANY possibilities. Mr. Mojo Risin by The Doors, Do You Hear What I Hear by everyone that's ever recorded a christmas album, the notes from Close Encounters of the Third Kind starting a couple notes in, but none of them are exactly right!!!

I have sent out a few emails to IG characters asking if they could in some way obtain a 'better' copy of Audiophile.mp3 citing corruption during transfer as the reason we need this. Unsuprisingly none of the characters have replied, not even to tell me to piss off, so someone who the characters like and will talk to may get better results.

I've been searching through a lot of classical music sites and come up with this. Anyone agree that #3 might be the start of The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy by Tchaikovsky? Here's a link.

The very first notes - there are 4 slow high notes which are then repeated once before the famous melody kicks in. Have to say it sounds near identical to me.

Sorry, the link I posted has expired but you can find the original on musipedia.org.

Ok, got something back from my Classical music forum...

they think we were right with "Also Sprach Zarathursta" for 3...

Oh, and "flight of the Bumblebee" for 4.

Enjoy new speculation.

Audiophile selection number 3
I think I've got it

I'm a classically trained flutist (can't believe it, but been playing for 35 years), so I've got some credentials. Wink I can tell you that number three is absolutely not Also Sprach Zarathustra. I think it is a melody line that occurs within the Roman Carnival Overture by Hector Berlioz. (I've actually had the good fortune to play this one--it's pretty fun.) If I were sure how to upload a file, I'd do it, but so that you can check it out, go to this midi on the web:

http://music.kingdavid.org/berzcarn.mid

The referring page, in case you want to download it, is here with a midi link.

http://music.kingdavid.org/carnival.htm

The part you want is first played, very slowly as in the whistled tune, at time mark 0:25 according to iTunes.

Glad I could make my first significant contribution!

Pied Piper

P.S. Will try to reverify the first waltz as well. Pretty sure it is Strauss, so the Vienna blood may be right.
