Re: Exact answer?

I've gone through the maths myself, and I get an exact point rather than a area, at a height of 1111 meters.

I concur. I just finishing working this through with my brother; I did the trig to get the receiver locations (law of cosines, woo), he used MATLAB to solve the system of equations, and 1111 (within reasonable rounding error ... there are a lot of digits to the right of a decimal place that one could retain throughout this procedure) seems to be the right answer. Annotated MATLAB code attached for the curious.

I'll accept an elevation 1111 as I am clueless. But let me ask yet another possibly clueless question - with the information supposedy yielding a single point, can't we narrow it down to a place on that floor? Or at least which side?

Ah. That is another matter entirely. Without more information, we cannot guess where on the fFloor the signal is, because we dont know where the building is in relation to the receivers. If we had any notion of where ascendancy point is situated in our model, we could definitely say. But bear in mind, we also don't know who or what occupies the 110th fFloor. It could be apartments, businesses, open courtyards, water tank ... and the object giving the signal could be a large thing occupying a room, or a small thing in someone's desk drawer. Or it could be in somewhere inaccessible, like an elevator shaft.

If the third power were especially bright (which they are), they would put equipment somewhere they were not. Such as putting it in an easily confusable area like a high rise tower, while they actually operate in somewhere much less obvious, like a mine shaft, or the catacombs, or the city council office.

I'm kind of reluctant to say "This is it! We'll get them this time!" More likely, this is when we get some more of their toys.

Can't we fiddle with the Ascendancy Point website?

I didn't respond to anything here yesterday because I thought I was too late, but apparently not.

cjr22 seems like he got the answer, but like he said, you have to use R4 and then use one of the other towers to create a relative xy axis.

At this point it all becomes 3D calculus. You have 4 sphere equations and have to figure out where the one intersecting point is.

1. Two intersecting spheres yeild a circle confined to one plane
2. A third sphere intersecting this plane yeilds 2 points
3. A fourth sphere narrows it down to one point

That point would be in relative coordinates to whicever x or y axis you set up. (Since we don't know the exact measurements of the streets, that's the best we can get).

This is all assuming, however, that the spheres overlap and meet properly. If they do not, then it could be possible to end up with Scott's wedge.

I would do the calculations myself right now to help out, but I'm at work.
