This is another post from Tanya in the ancient Greece and Rome thread. It's pretty interesting, considering that Megan seems to be communicating with us even though Phillip says she's been cremated.
Quote:
I hope that this is illuminating. I have a background in Classics and studies in Ancient Greek.

When Herakles was elevated to his status as a divine being by his
father Zeus, his divine half (the half of his soul that was capable of
surviving Mt Olympus) was raised, while his mortal half (which was
created by his mortal mother) was sent to the underworld.

I haven't read deeply into Herakles myths but touched on some during my undergratuate degree looking at Gender in Rome, with the amazonian
stories, and at the Iliad and Odyssey myself.

Another two men who are, in a way split between Olympus and the
underworld are Kastor and Pollux; One of these brothers was born as
Zeus' son, the other as that of a mortal king. The divine brother
convinced Zeus to pity his brother in Hades' realm and so they rise and
fall between the two realms on alternate days.
As you can see, the idea that any being has one place to reside after
death or ascendancy is quite malleable.

But the idea is that either Herakles was split in two or that he
somehow resides simultaneously within both realms, or sometimes that he drifts between both as he is required to by his divine and mortal
inheritance.

We have an update! It seems that after so many people sent in requests to work for Vanadium, Tessa finally decided to give them a look, and she gave me the website to do so as well!

Here, my friends, is the email:

Quote:
Hi Jerry!

Sorry for the delayed response. Things were kind of hectic yesterday
afternoon. For some reason
we're getting about a million applications from people who want to work
with Vanadium Network
Solutions!

Well, good luck. I decided to finally check out what all the fuss was
about, and I have to say I
still have no idea. You can see for yourself - their website's at
vanadiumnet.com - and even
without checking the file it looks pretty likely that we haven't EVER
had work from them.

Anyway, your resume is on the system. You can access it using your
username and password from the
Cadmean main page. I'll submit it now to our matching officers and
when they have a suitable
position they'll get back to you.

Regards,

Tessa Watson
Cadmean Recruiting

And here's some stuff tipsila found when looking at the site.

Quote:
[18:21] tipsila1: Due to a swiftly changing industry environment, Vanadium Network Solutions has closed for business, effective August 23, 2005. We wish to thank all our clients for investing in a Canberra-based small information technology business, and hope that you'll continue to watch for news of upcoming projects from the principals involved. It's been a great few years and we've enjoyed working with everyone!

- The Managers

[18:21] tipsila1: you can just quote me
[18:22] SamRey56: Okay, gotcha.
[18:22] tipsila1: wait
[18:22] tipsila1: Do not believe their lies. If you are looking here, you are on the right track. Vanadium is merely a puppet; you seek the appendage within it. He is marked on the back of his neck and on his hand. I am Occluder and I am watching your efforts." />
[18:22] tipsila1: that is all of it
[18:22] tipsila1: Occluder??
[18:22] SamRey56: Occluder...possibly coded?
[18:22] SamRey56: Give me a second, I'll try ROT-13ing it.
[18:23] tipsila1: occlude -- To cause to become closed; obstruct: occlude an artery.
To prevent the passage of: occlude light; occlude the flow of blood.
Chemistry. To absorb or adsorb and retain (a substance).
Meteorology. To force (air) upward from the earth's surface, as when a cold front overtakes and undercuts a warm front.

So, looks like things are kicking into high gear now.

EDIT: Found a blog for Occluder. http://occluder.blogspot.com/ Looks like he's giving us a direct charge.

Hey all - new to this game but thought I'd take a look.

Oooo - lots of vauge hints on that blog site for Occluder (including a vauge reference in the Jan 14th post to the Unfiction forums Wink.
Seems to hint about a login/password as well in the Jan 25th post but I'm not familiar with the game enough yet to have any idea what site to use the info on, or what 'words first telegraphed' refers to.
Checking out the 'Ariza Storm' comment in the 14th post leads to a small Wiki site about a cult that commited mass suicide by drinking chemical fertilizers after writing the name 'Abraxas' on thier arms - anyone noticing anything familiar here? Note: need to check some more but it looks like the wiki site is in game.
Gonna follow up on the 'missing' cult leader and see what I can track down.

Edit: As far as I can tell the wiki site is purely in game given searches for the newspaper article and book listed at the end as well as searches on the group leaders.
In addition I noticed something about the blog post titles:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Jan 8th : Fire In Red Skies Tonite = FIRST
Jan 9th : Now On To A Greater And Mightier Earth = NOT A GAME
Jan 14th : Alas, Babylon Raises A Xerxes As Scion = ABRAXAS
Jan 17th : Darknes, Ever After The Heart, Dawns Around You = DEATH DAY
Jan 25th : Peering At Suspicious Semicolons While Our Retinas Die = PASSWORD

Still looking Smile

Further Edit: Just noticed on the whois info for VanadiumNet that the Billing contact is one Damien Brin - odd coincidence that thats the name of the missing cult leader eh? He's based in ACT (Australian Capital Territory for those non-Aussie players - thats the state specificaly made to house Canberra) and there is a Gmail contact for them listed too.

A member on the IG forum, Freshness, noticed what you have just found above, also if you read the first letter of each sentence there is more. I quote Freshness.

Fire In Red Skies Tonight: FIRST (Actual entry has nothing.)
Now On To A Greater And Mightier Earth: NOT A GAME (Entry: MEGAN KYLE)
Alas, Babylon Raises A Xerxes As Scion: ABRAXAS (Entry: VANADIUM HAS SET A TRAP)
Darkness, Ever After The Heart, Dawns Around You: DEATH DAY (Entry: SHE DIES TUESDAY)
Peering At Suspicious Semicolons While Our Retinas Die: PASSWORD. (Entry: DAUGHTER OF HERA)

Also, on the January 9th post on Occluder's blog, AngBa found that the post is filled with links -- hover your mouse over the words. There are 17 of them in all.

I doubt Damien's just going to give us his username and password for Cadmean, though. Hmmm...

EDIT: Update to Megan's youtube profile. No new videos, but in the section where she talked about being a reflection in something's dreaming eye, there's new text replacing it.

Quote:
i am blind / we are all blind / the walls are moving outwards

Son of EDIT: Okay, I have absolutely NO idea if this is in game or not, but it might be so I'm posting it. Following the previous pattern, I tried some of the text from the youtube profile as a web address, and I got this: http://iamblind.com/

WARNING: Leads to a site with image of woman in rather skimpy swimwear. May be NSFW.

Like I said, no clue if it's in game or what. Just including it here to be on the safe side.

You guys figured so much out! Great job, although I have to confess I'm a little jealous. I had class last night and was too tired when I got home to do anything but glance at the new sites you found.

Something did jump out at me from Occluder's blog though - regarding the word's first telegraphed (this is just speculation but I'll spoiler it just in case):

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
My first thought was the actual words first telegraphed -"What hath God wrought," which is what Samuel Morse sent to his assistant -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Morse#Trivia

It was what came to mind as soon as I read the clue.

Hey everyone. I'm joining into this little trip to neverland.

I wrote a mail to Tanya, just saying I read her blog and liked her way of thinking. She wrote back just to talk about books and to mention her lost one. The mails are kind of long and besides the fact she mentions links to peter pan I don't know what else here can be useful.

Now I'll join the IG forums, as chase already posted a comment on Tanya's blog, and the IG forums are a couple of clicks away from that.

To those who don't know me, I really like to get into character on ARG's, so you'll have to excuse me if I act pretentiously on the IG forums.

Ok, how to do this without sounding like some crazy desperate blog geek...

Nop, I guess there is no way to do it, so I'll just go ahead and say
that I found your blog out of pure chance, while trying to kill the
time I have while I find some job that does not requires me to deal
with 14 year olds that think books without pictures are 'uncool'.

And I felt somehow identified. Again, it's probably just dumb luck,
but I feel just like you do right now, trying to inmerse in
intelectual realitites to avoid a really unmeaningful physical
reality. And just to add to the serendipity, I just finish reading The
Historian. It really sheds new light to the good old prince of night
creatures.

Anyway, I just thought I may say you sound like a great mind and I
would love to keep in touch with you. I'm sort of an scholar myself, I
think greek used to be a beautiful language and right now all I do in
life is try to find a job while I waste time on the internet, reading
blogs, playing ARGs and of course: Reading.

Hi, JMS,

Don't take this personal, but you left an "e" off of "nop", I'm not
sure whether you meant to use "identified" with a passive voice or
not, you used an "n" in "inmerse" and forgot that second "s", and an
"l" out of "intelectual"...

Sorry. Cal sent me a digitial photo yesterday of a blackboard in a
coffee shop that advertised their special variety of tea as one that
was "sort out" in a market of africa. He accompanied it with a note
saying that, if I liked, he would buy himself a red piece of chalk and
correct it for me.

I think that I might be a bit manic or obsessive, but when George Bush
is reading picture books upside down and "The DaVinci Code" is still a
bestseller, I don't think that a small amount of grammatical anality
is that bad.

I'm really happy that you contacted me; apart from this man that I met
on the bus and babbled to while scheming other schemes, I've hardly
met anyone where I live. Human contact that amounts to more than "I'm
looking for a book.... I think it had a blue cover..." is incredibly
welcome. Maybe it's just from living in Canberra, the public
servant's capital city.

I'd offer to help you find a job where I am, but our boss seems to be
selecting specialists that he likes and chasing them down. What I can
do is ask you what your opinion was of "The Historian", and the
characters within. I found that the characters had slightly less
depth than the documents and scenery, especially within the final
scene of the young father's initial journey; the old woman, the local
customs, the experience of being within the burial chamber of an old
church all seemed much more important than the emotions of the
characters.

Of course, maybe I was just paying more attention to the books and buildings.

Have you ever read any books by Umberto Eco or Paulo Coelho or
Josstein Gaardner? I'd love to hear your opinion on them. Or maybe
children's classics? The blood of the initial fairy tales perhaps, or
the psychological issues within Enid Blyton, or James Barrie's work.

We could, of course, always sit around and poke at the holes in the
Harry Potter series and chuckle.

I'm sorry if I've been too long-winded; I'm bored and tired and
panicky at the moment; I've lost a book and it was rather important to
me. It's not something that anyone can find; I think that I left it
behind on the bus.

Great to hear from you, and to feel that my ignoble blog has attracted
some attention.

Tanya

So not only my grammar is broken, but my spelling as well. On my
defense, I spend most of my life using a different language. And don't
worry about the job. I'm sure I'll find something, I'm just a little
frustrated.

The Historian, to me, was a book about places and books. In that book
Dracula was more an influence over regions than a real character, so
the other characters are simply overwhlemed by his influence.
Specially the narrator's voice: the girl's story about coming of age
simply can't compete with a force that has forced the coming of age of
whole countries and ages.

And the vampire fanboy in me didn't like how easy they took him down.

Eco is such a wonderful writer. I know most people think The name of
the rose is his best work, but the The Foucalt Pendulum is so more
deep. Not to mention the poke at editorial scams is pure gold.
Gaardner marked an important moment of my life with Sophie's World,
but I haven't read anything else from him.Coehlo... Well, I won't try
to sweet down my opinion: I think he's below miss Rowling in the
pantheon of bad writers who earn too much money.

I don't know that much about children classics. Once I read some of
the original Grimm stories, and found them fascinating, but that's
about it. Barrie's work had been calling to my attention, specially
after all the recent deal with Peter Pan's "Authorized" sequel. Book
stores are releasing some good looking editions of the original work.

Now I've been long-winded, so I'll cut it now. But I'm sorry to hear
about your book. I know how important they can be to people like us.
It's important for some sentimental reason, or is a rare book? I wish
whoever found it is curious enought not to trow it away, but not
curious enought to want to keep it for her(him)self. You should try
the same bus route a couple of times. Maybe the one who found your
book will recognize you.

Emails pieced together

With the last few e-mails trickling in, It seems we have all the pieces to put together the message from the ends of the emails.

Quote:
Pressure. It comes on you like the implacable face of time, squeezing the edges of your world in tighter. Claustrophobia
becomes less a condition and more a perception of reality.

I need my ears to pop. I need that sense that the pressure is gone, and the sound has become clearer. I need more signal,
and less noise. I need to make transit to a better and more lucid state.

The signal is a hum. The signal is a scream broadcast from inside me to elsewhere inside me. The signal is an oscillating auditory hallucination that carries all the wisdom of existence. It wants to be heard but it overlaps with everything else. It dilutes into my work, my family, my passions, and when I go looking there's nothing but static the world over.

My hands aren't big enough to cover my face. I need
bigger hands. I'm walking through a story that's been laid out for me in advance, but I don't have a plot outline and sometimes my lines seem hastily written. The audience doesn't know who I am or what I am. I can feel the audience watching. He's always watching. If I break the fourth wall I'll be face to face with him. If I break that barrier suddenly everything will be inside out and I'll be in the place I was meant to be. He tells me so.

The barrier between this world and Neverland wears thin. I think the window's open.

I don't think this leads anywhere further, but it wraps up a loose end and makes an interesting read.

edit: tanya's and chase's blogs have updated. they seem to be hitting it off.

Anybody heard anything from this one since the recent technical difficulties with the IG forums and websites? It's been pretty dead since that point, so I'm beginning to wonder if the game is still on or what.
