Alternate realities: the latest twist in the ad game

Apparently UF is a "puzzle solving club". Wish someone had told me what I was getting involved in... Laughing

Yeah, didn't they ask you to pay annual dues? I know where the San Jose Mercury News offices are, I could drive there and show this reporter some swag. (ok, maybe the tin foil hat from WiBS wouldn't make a good impression)

Holly, a member of the Unfiction fan community who identifies herself online as ``konamouse,'' showed up at the Bellagio fountain event and chatted with journalists and fans of the Vanishing Point game.

I swear she really is a mouse every time I read something about ARGs somewhere Konamouse is there, or her name pops up.. She is like my ARG superhero, I think she can fly or teleport or something.

Save me ....... Konamouse

One solution is to conduct alternate reality games that are giant puzzles solved by teams of strangers on the Internet whose only connection is a love for online treasure hunts. These ARGs rely on networks of addicted fans to both stoke their popularity and to provide the collective mind power for solving puzzles.

I actually like this paragraph.

Quote:
The winner who solved the puzzle first,

BZZZZ. Wrong. This winner was from a random drawing of all eligible points accumulated during the contest. Jeesh.

Quote:
promote the Microsoft video game, ``Halo 2.'' Participants only found that out at the end.

Hard to find that out at the "end" when the "ilovebees.com" website was flashed at the end of the movie trailer commercial for Halo 2. He could have used Last Call Poker as a better example of the audience not really knowing the promoted product until well immersed in the game.

Quote:
Full told, more than 70,000 people participated in solving the Vanishing Point game puzzles,

I was wondering how many registrations they got.

In the freezing-cold air, she described the puzzle clues she saw at the fountain show to another fan via cell phone.

This is where marketing is going in the future: games that are really more like promotions, and campaigns with high-production values where the participants don't realize or care if they're the targets of marketing messages.

Hey, are they calling me stupid!?! Because most of the games I have played lately were in some way or another viral marketing. And I enjoyed them (with the exemption of Occular Effects ending).

I know, I only lurked because I wasn't fully aware of the ARG genre at the time and the ending pissed me off to no end. I loved the story only to be greatly disapointed at the end. I just hope there's a part 2 or sequel, that's all I'm gonna say about it.

I haven't read the article yet, so kick me if I'm wrong... but could it have been referring to the meta puzzle? That one was the first person to 'solve' correctly; the grand/first/etc prizes were random drawings.

Well, aside from the trailer, there really wasn't anything that was undoubtedly blatant Halo 2. Of course, anyone who's the least bit intelligent would have known pretty quick from common sense Razz... but in-game, even the 2 locked audio clips that mentioned spartans we didn't get until later.
But yeah, even so, "participants only found that out at the end" is a big stretch. More like "the official connection was only revealed at the end" (being the training exercises)

I still want to know how many unique players there were, without fake registrations for referral points... Confused

The article referenced this winner as getting a trip to space. The winner of the Rocketship prize was from the random drawings.
The winner of the meta puzzle got their name enscribed on the AMD chip.
So they got their winners/prizes reversed.
